Running FS1 entirely from hard drive - Possible?
Wow! Two years since my last post. Now thats a long lurk :D

Anyways to get to the point, is there any way to run FS1 entirely off the hard drive including movies and everything else? Search came up dry. I figure its going to take someone with a good memory to tell me!

If you can get hold of a cracked copy of the .exe I see no reason why you couldn't just copy the mve files to the HD and run it without the CDs.

There. managed to get through the whole thing without suggesting he uses FS2_Open and FS1 port! Damn!

if you have the disks, you can make iso's from them and load them into a virtual drive.  i don't know how to do that, but its possible since my brother does it alot.

Not a bad idea. Bit more wasteful in space than mine though :)

Thanks. I think I'll probably end up going the ISO route. The reason for it is twofold. Firstly to protect those precious FS1 CDs (Yeah I know I could just make backups) but secondly and most importantly I have a home built cockpit that I use for FS2_Open among other games - I'm a mechwarrior nut too - and the CD is inacessible without either redesigning it or heaving my vast bloated carcass outta there to change discs. Recently I've had a hankering to play FS1 again. I still think its a superior game in some ways and while the FS1 port is great it isnt quite perfect.

Ooh, a cockpit.  Got any pics? :)

Given that I'm the last person in the world who doesn't own a digital camera, no I dont. One of these days I'll probably break down and take some regular pics to scan. A lot of people put up websites about stuff like this. To me that's always seemed a bit like walking around telling people how smart and clever you are. Not doing one for the current project either which is a wall mounted touchscreen jukebox.

:jaw: Christ, I'd kill for a built in cockpit around my computer. Plus, a big jukebox  in the wall would be ****ing sweet.
Wh00t!? Vinyl? Is it like an I-pod 2 or something?

Not in the wall, just on the wall. I don't think my landlord would be too impressed by me hacking big holes in the plaster. I picked up a cheap 12" touchscreen a while ago and its just a case of shoving that in a box with a mini itx board. Not complicated or expensive.

As for the cockpit that's also easy and not too expensive. A little basic woodworking, paint, old computer parts and a HOTAS rig (Mine uses a Saitek X36) Total about $500. The trick is having the space for it. To be honest I dont use mine half the time since its in the basement and it gets pretty cold down there in winter.

But seriously, give us some pictures, inside and outside and while playing. That would be the sweetest thing in the world man. You are a very very lucky dude. Just add in a big cunfy tall seat and some straps & **** (tm) and it'll make you feel like home. :P

Well if I ever get around to taking any pictures I'll post some. Luck really doesnt enter into it much. I worked hard on it but it was fun to build if you like that sort of thing. You should have seen my original design ...whoa...talk about biting off more than you can chew. curved sides, curved plexiglass canopy, projection system, the works. Would have cost me a fortune and I might have just had it finished by the time FS3 hit the shelves! :D

If you want to mount ISOs, use a program called Daemontools. Very simple, actually. :) I think Alcohol 120% does it as well (never tried though). And that cokpit thing sounds pretty crazy...

I've had issues with Alcohol 120%'s drive emulation. Was trying to steal interrupts from my sound card IIRC and making windows asplode.
Arrr. I'm a pirate.
