Re: EA Gets Exclusive Star Wars VG Rights
Rebellion was a pretty damn good game. I'd kill for an updated version that has more in-depth fleet combat.

The thing that always got me about Rebellion was how ultimately tacked on the fleet combat was. (Over time I realized that the main reason to take direct command was because the AI couldn't manage a proper retreat-before-contact; the AI was amazing at keeping its fleets on the shuffle too.) In a lot of ways it was closer to Paradox's management-sim model of strategy game than tactical/strategic scale actual modeled combat that makes sense.

(Plus the fact you were pretty close to guaranteed only one fleet action in a game, if you were competent...)

Re: EA Gets Exclusive Star Wars VG Rights
Given LucasArt's track record for the past few years, and the general level of quality in SW games in the same time period, I have to wonder why this is such bad news - or what exactly are we losing? I haven't seen a good SW game since KOTOR 1. At this point in time, "Star Wars" in the title of a game gives me more doubts about it's quality than the "EA" stamp does.

Seriously, why is anyone still worked up about the fact that nothing good is coming out of Star Wars? It's like getting upset that the latest Eddie Murphy movie is ****. :p

And the sooner we all start ignoring it, the sooner they'll have to do something actually good in order to win us back.

I agree with this. I've always thought a lot of Star Wars games are lazily made games cashing in on the brand name. The only Star Wars games I have are Rogue Squadron, Starfighter, Jedi Starfighter and Battlefront 2. Oh and one for the Commodore 64, I forget it's name. It involves shooting TIEs and the Death Star trench run if I remember right.

You missed out on all the TIE Fighter games, XWA, KOTOR.... There's a lot of room in the Star Wars license to make good games.

Yes, I did. The TIE fighter games I was envious of PC owners being able to play those. Even though I never actually saw them in action, I just heard so much about them. I've no idea if I'd like KOTOR though. I've never looked into it. Star Wars RPG doesn't make me excited.

Never played it. Know nothing about it, but have seen it's name pop up here and there on numerous occasions. I've been off RPGs for a lot of years though. The last one I enjoyed was Final Fantasy X. I did complete Final Fantasy X-2 as well, but it was like half what a Final Fantasy should be, but also half the price, so can't complain. It had it's moments, but there were times when I'd have been most embarrassed for anyone to see me playing it.

Re: EA Gets Exclusive Star Wars VG Rights
Grab KotOR and KotOR 2, and the Restored Content Mod for KotOR 2.  A lot of stuff got axed so LucasArts could release KotOR 2 in time for the holiday season, and that mod adds it back in while fixing a few bugs that never got patched.

Re: EA Gets Exclusive Star Wars VG Rights
Lorric, saying Final Fantasy and KoTOR are both RPGs is like saying Call of Duty and Deus Ex are both first-person shooters.  While it might give you some idea about some of the characteristics, the comparisons are absolutely meaningless.

KoTOR is a party-based 'western RPG,' widely-acknowledged as among the best ever made.  Final Fantasy is a tired jRPG series that should have ended years ago but keeps flogging the dead horse for all the cash its worth.

You owe it to yourself to play KoTOR, then Dragon Age: Origins.  They are both excellent games.

I've never really thought it that big a deal whether an RPG is Western or Eastern. Just that it does what a good RPG is supposed to do. But it's just the game type that's turned me off in recent times. Though I'm sure Final Fantasy going down (the series basically ended for me at X-2) had a lot to do with it. Ni No Kuni did grab my attention though. First one in all those years to excite me, though I haven't paid much attention to the genre. I will wait for my RPG-loving friend to play it first, and see what he has to say. There are mixed reports about heavy grinding being required in that game and not being required, that's the sticking point. Grinding is not fun for me.

Final Fantasy has gone down the tubes because Square-Enix has gone down the tubes. Final Fantasy had a completely different story each time, you wouldn't even need the IP to make a Final Fantasy-type game. The IP used to be a stamp of peerless quality, now, it's more like a warning label. As is Square-Enix. Oh, I came very close to going on a big anti-Square-Enix rant here when I found out about Final Fantasy: All The Bravest recently. I did write about it to a friend though, so it could yet be copy-pasted with minor adjustments...

KOtoR is off limits. It's not on PS3, and my PC is at an extreme premium for hard drive space. I had a quick look about Dragon Age Origins, wasn't pleased to see lots of DLC. Do you need to get that DLC to see crucial parts of the story or play the game properly? Does it feel like a half-finished game without the DLC?

Re: EA Gets Exclusive Star Wars VG Rights
Lorric, friendly reminder, you're rambling again. This is not a thread about jRPGs, or how they're different from cRPGs. This is also not a thread about Squenix's failures to do something good with the FF brand.
regarding KOTOR: There is very little grind, and a lot of awesome story. Gameplay is a bit janky, on account of it being a port of a game made for the original XBox, but it's a very cool Star Wars game that does a good job of translating the SW feel into a game (And KOTOR2 has an absolutely gorgeous story that does rather interesting things with the universe). It's also only around 3.5GB in size according to Steam.

DAO's DLC is completely unnecessary (Although I should think that the Ultimate Edition, which has all of the DLC on-disc already, is not that much more expensive than the original release).

The DAO DLC is only necessary to get rid of a sucker's quest permanently stuck on your journal reminding you to buy a DLC in order to finish it. You can skip it, it's pretty lame.

No, I'm fairly certain Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is Baldur's Gate done wrong.

DA:O is much closer to "Not Baldur's Gate at all".
