Re: What are you playing right now?
Last night I finished Fire Emblem Three Houses. Play time says it's 100 hours but that seems high, I did leave it idling a few times. But it is a very long game if you want to hear all the dialogues. Also there's two other houses to go through, maybe with different missions and story, and the DLC campaign...

And then I resumed the ol' Total Warhammer 2 game. Finally eliminated the last of the Tomb Kings who were foolish enough to aggrieve me.

The only good undead is an undead who crawled on its decomposing belly begging for a peace treaty, and that's how the last faction of Tomb Kings was allowed to survive.

All the better so I can turn my attention to the Greenskins. For the Great Plan!

EDIT: lol just kidding, the Followers of Nagash have to die for my objectives. So it goes.

The Surge 2 was up on discount. Not bad for a scifi Souls-like I suppose, I like their approach to called shots/VATS targeting.

Re: What are you playing right now?
I just finished Dark Souls 3. I ran a STR focused build with two-handed Flamberge/Irithyll Straight Sword/Shield.

I'm pretty close to the beginning of The Painted World DLC. Also, I'm proud to admit I have no problem cheesing tough monsters with a bow or hiding behind invisible barriers (Stupid dang giant wolf and tiny wolves...)

Not knowing any of the dark or souls series,  I immediately took STR to mean "silent threat: reborn" 😂

Re: What are you playing right now?
After more than two weeks and 121 videos I finished X-wing - Collector's CD-rom for DOS.
I had fun for most of it but at times I remembered why I went through it from start to finish only once more than ten years ago (when I was little I mostly messed around with the simulator mission thanks in large part to a pilot with all missions unlocked on the CD).
As someone who's experienced enough with the sequels my experience is a bit skewed as I have a much better knowledge of the game systems than someone going in only reading the manual and the Farlander Papers short story (which wasn't even present with the CD-rom edition for some reason, I have it only because back then I bought the floppy version by mistake while travelling at first and the bloody thing didn't even install for some reason) so at least the first chunk of the campaign was surprisingly easy.
Note that the CD version has only some marginal graphical and movement math improvements from the original floppy release so it's still very rough around the edges compared to Tie Fighter (especially the CD version which had 640x480 support).
For starters there is no "press A to see if someone's attacking your target" which means you often have to either eyeball or consult the tactical map (which is a bit cumbersome to use and doesn't display mines, buoys and satellites for some reason) to try and deduce what is really attacking whatever ship(s) you need to keep alive.
There are already target presets though and most of the times being able to instantly switch to your convoy/mothership/whatever or the ISD that is vomiting TIEs on them is perfectly sufficient to get your bearings after a particularly disorienting dogfight.
Unfortunately the game is really on another galaxy compared to its immediate sequel Tie Fighter in many other regards.
The targeting computer for example is a bitmap of the ship you are targeting with some fake readouts, designation/cargo and a status that can be OK/Shields down/hull damaged/disabled/captured which sometimes can be frustratingly vague when you are chipping and the tougher ships with only lasers.
Enemy missiles are much more lethal here because they are very difficult to dodge and their hitbox is much smaller than in the sequels meaning that the only way not to get hit is constantly swerving (which is not an option on slower ships) until the missiles selfdestruct which in an escort mission often means losing precious time, it is tecnically possible to shoot them down but very difficult outside fully frontal initial approach and even then you might get a missile in the canopy about 60% of the times.
One of the worst issue is how opaque objectives and mission status are, you can fail a mission and not notice it until you finally run out of patience and hyper out. Only in one of the later missions I actually got a mission failed message in-game and it came about ten minutes too late. Some briefings (not many fortunately) are downright misleading and state objectives you don't need to complete for the mission to succeed, which actually got me stuck on a mission for months during my first serious playthrough.
One of the things that messes with me is that if your pilot gets killed or captured during the campaign you can kiss your score and rank goodbye, probably a residual of a scrapped career mode but it's incredibly annoying and basically forced me to backup my pilot after every succesful mission.
Some later missions (especially in the expansions) can be extremely frustrating and at least one felt basically luck-based (fortunately part of a binary choice so you can avoid it and play another mission instead but I wanted to record everything so...).
The shipset while being superior to the average Wing Commander game is still fairly limited, the absence of real space stations and platforms leads to countless missions with lots of containers and parked bulk freighters trying to pose as platforms and drydocks.
Of course being an old school sim there is also very little railroading during gameplay, you can break the game in ways that allow to get all the bonus medals before finishing the first Tour of Duty just by the sheer insanity of single-handedly attacking Nebulon B Frigates and Star Destroyers after wiping out their entire complement of fighters. In particular I managed to down the Star Destroyer that gets sabotaged at the end of the first ToD several times in the missions that lead up to said sabotage.
Of course part of it seems deliberate as for example you can get a capital ship to appear in the very first mission if you do certain things under certain conditions which leads to the first bonus medal (I think I might have posted about it before).
Bottom line: fine game but aged badly, better start with Tie Fighter first.

Here's a playlist of my playthrough:

I obviously omitted my many, many deaths and also forgive the AMD watermark in the first few videos, I had yet to figure out I could use the AMD control panel to edit out parts of the videos when I made them.

Re: What are you playing right now?
I remember I loved X-Wing as a kid. But I also remember losing your pilot all the time, and didn't even have a concept of backing it up, back then. Also I never finished, I got completely stuck on a B-Wing mission of some sort.
Well, I googled looking for the exact mission, and apparently the B-Wing campaign was in an expansion. So I guess I technically DID finish X-Wing!

I need to get around to that one. Alan Wake was the **** and I know one of the DLCs incorporates it in some way.

Re: What are you playing right now?
I finished a bunch of stuff from my backlog:
Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space AKA Sam & Max Season 2 (PC)
At about 19 hours it's longer than season one which was longer than Hit The Road.
It's a bit strange that these games have been getting longer rather than shorter over the years.
The last episode drags a bit in places due to the middle part being full of unskippable transitions that are just a smidge too long.

Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse AKA Season 3 (PC)
Well, that took a dark turn, legitimately dark not darkly funny for once.
There's still plenty of funny moments though.
The best part was seeing Sam going full on stereotypical noir detective in episode 3 but in general the game flows better then the other seasons.
It's also a tad shorter than season 2, though it's probably only that the puzzles are easy enough I didn't need hints this time.

Halo 3: ODST (PC)
Helping Nathan Fillion and Tricia Helfer get through the war-torn streets of New Mombasa was much more fun than the original Halo 3 and didn't overstay its welcome.
It probably helps that there was no Flood.

Cosmic Star Heroine (PC)
It plays it a bit too straight, the humor of the other Zeboyd games is almost completely absent and with the plot being so simple and straightforward it ends up hurting the game.
The combat system is more akin to that of a modern JRPG and while it means it's less mindless than the NES-style combat of Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves The World it also means that if you want to grind for that last optional dungeon it will take probably more time than for the rest of the game, at that point I just skipped it for the final dungeon.

I liked that one too

Re: What are you playing right now?
A fanfic on spacebattles drove me to reinstall Earthsiege 2.

Combat in this game is somehow even more claustrophobic than the MechWarrior series. Somebody really didn't like shooting at 300m.

Robots explode real good though, even 25 years later.

Yeah but starsiege is the jewel in that series crown.  I still love the fact they had 3d animated avatars on the omniweb and Mark hamill.

Re: What are you playing right now?
They don't explode like grease fires in StarSiege though, I don't think. Also I am a sucker for salvage mechanics, which IIRC starsiege didn't have

Re: What are you playing right now?
Always aimed at the legs in both Earthsiege games and ended up with more salvage than I really needed. It's to the point that in hindsight I should have raised the difficulty in Earthsiege 2 because the last stretch became stupidly easy.
Starsiege felt weird to control with a joystick or there was just some setting that I didn't find that really made it feel off compared to the Earthsiege games so I didn't get into it.

Re: What are you playing right now?
I decided I wanted to play a Civilization game. I started two Civ 3 games, and got lolstomped very quickly. Then I decided to play Civilization Beyond Earth which definitely scratched that itch - I stayed up until the big hours of the morning playing on my first day...

So after advancing enough that the indigenous monsters don't attack my trade convoys any more, I was content to just sit and expand and advance toward the victory I wanted, I tried to make alliances with the other civs. But noooo, several times, either a civ declares war on me (and I have to squish them) or an ally declares war and I get pulled in too (and I squish them). It happened four times, twice to the same civ; I guess I didn't squish them hard enough the first time).

I build the wonder that sets a timer on my victory. Yay. Next turn, the three last other civilizations - all whom I'm allied with - I think declare war on each other, and somehow that plunges me into war with all of them. Of course at this point I have more cities than all of them combined, and I have enough money (energy) to buy and sell them three times over, so I squish them. I actually have to stop myself from taking the last two cities so I don't get the domination victory.

Re: What are you playing right now?
Ahh, yes, the WWI Special, where one small declaration of war leads to the whole world (or galaxy) being set ablaze. It happens to me a lot in Stellaris these days.

I remember one time where it really bit me in the ass : the northern part of the galaxy was inhabited by 3 driven assimilators + 1 devouring swarm, so everybody stayed the **** away from that mess and formed their own federation blocs. Towards the end, one of the Borg empire had assimilated all the big threat empires then helpfully started picking on our enemies. Throughout the game I made sure to maintain good relations with that particular Assimilator as we shared a border, and I was fairly confident that I'd be able to skyrocket my economy and military to catch up with it before the end of the game.

Then, naturally, it got pissed of at one of my allies and declared war on us all...
I didn't even bother finishing that particular game. For extra irony, the very previous game I'd played, *I* was playing as a Driven Assimilator and had enough firepower to stomp the rest of the galaxy twice over.

Re: What are you playing right now?
Biomutant

It was very, very interesting - also very uneven. The world of the game is very interesting, as a post-humanity, nature has reclaimed (almost) everything humanity ever made kind of world. However the decision to narrate everything is hurting its narrative - all characters blend together despite their varied and interesting visual design (they all speak various forms of non-human speech, which is translated to you as the player through a narrator).
Combat has a nice flow to it, though it takes a lot of time to become actually varied as it takes time to unlock more combos and so does upcycling an arsenal to be on equal footing.

Also, Elvis Ferret.
