Post by: starbug on June 10, 2017, 08:06:18 am
==============================
=United Terran Republic Fleet Draft Release 0.15=
==============================
UPDATED 19/8/17
Ok so i have managed to get some time to work on this pack again.
-So i have corrected the MOI issue and fixed the docking points.
-I have also gone in and i think i have sorted all the subsystems miss matching.
-Also fixed minor issues like radar dishes rotation axis being wrong.
-added some minor details to Tempest and Heracles, ie glowing points.

So please let me know of any issues i have missed :)

NEW DOWNLOAD 19/8/17 https://www.mediafire.com/file/s3t9ad288bdkcjd/Republic%20Fleet%20v0.15.rar

This is the first release of the United Terran Republic fleet pack, The United Terran Republic has nothing to do with the freespace universe, it is something of my own making. You may use these models as you see fit but please credit me Starbug and Darius for making them. The pack contains 6 ships

Excursor class Corvette:
Still working on a Tech Description for this one :)

Minow class Destroyer:
The Minnow class destroyer is an refit of the Olympia class destroyers. The Minnow has been fitted with 2 of the new Phalanx Particle beam cannons for an extra punch. These new weapons come at the expense of removing the VLS Torpedos and has less muntions for her Plasma Cannons, which reduces her operational effectiveness. The Phalanx Cannons are also tied into the ships reactor and Shockdrive and as such the weapons can only fire for very short periods of time but when firing the cannon is devastating. The Minnow is primarly designed for testing of new systems to be intergrated into the Tempest class Frigates. Despite these short comings the Minnow has proved an effective vessel when supporting Olympia Destroyers and Excursor corvettes.

Olympia class Destroyer:
The Olympia is the standard Destroyer of the Republic navy. The Olympia was constructed at the Luna shipyards by the Ariel Aerospace corperation. First introduced in 2165, the Olympia was designed to counter the colonial vessels which where heavier armoured than the Republics Halbred corvettes. The Olympia proved to be a match against the Colonial navy and help end the mining Guild war of 2170. Since then the Olympia has found it self patrolling shipping routes, protecting convoys against Raider incursions. The destroyer is armed with 12 VLS Hammer torpedos, 2 88mm Arclite Plasma Cannons, 1 CW88mm Gauss Cannon and 9 CQWS enplacements. The Hull is comprised of several layers of armour for defense. The Olympia is also equiped with a Standard mk3 Cold Fusion Reactor, Shockpoint Drive systems to allow it to make its own Shockjumps into Subspace. The Olympia is also has the new Grav drive, a section of the vessel that rotates to provide gravity for the crew, unlike the halbred Corvettes which had a small grav field generated by the ships reactor.

Tempest class Frigate:
The Tempest class Frigate commissioned in 2178, is the designed to replace the Olympia and Minnow class Destroyers as the mainstay of the Republic fleet. The Tempests design can be traced back to the Olympia space frame. Ariel Aerospace Corp found that the frame was a sound design, so they decided to upscale the frame. The Tempest is designed to be a sledgehammer, to jump in and devastate the enemy in the opening salvo. To achieve this the Tempest is armed with 4 frontal and 2 rear Phalanx particle beam cannons power by 2 arc reactors and the Shockpoint drive. 1 heavy Arclite Gauss Cannon, 1 CW120, 7 CW88mm Plasma cannons and 2 Hammer torpedo launchers. She is also armed with multiple Close Quarter Weapon System's should hostile vessels get in to close. The only issue raised so far with the design is in the minimal anti-fighter defence and slow speed, but this is compinsated by an escort of Olympia destroyers. So far at aleast 2 dozen of these vessels have been produced at the Luna shipyards with more on order as tensions rise between the United Terran Republic and the Colonial Alliance. When a Tempest appears in system you know the Republic means business.

Heracles class Frigate Carrier:
United Terran Republic's small Carrier, based off the Tempest's hull frame. Most of the heavy weapons from the Tempest have been stripped out for hangerbays, repair and rearm facilities

Donnager class Science Cruiser:
The Donnager is an explorer class vessel, designed to map out uncharted systems, asteroid fields and nebula's. It is equipped with all the latest scientific equipment the Republic has to offer. The Donnager class also acts as research outpost, to test out new weapon systems, engine designs, special projects and any other research which is deemed to much of a risk to a planets population. For this reason the Donnager is only armed with minimal weapons, mainly for protection against asteroids.

The Donnager can also act as a colony ship, a large transport vessel due to its modular design. The science hub can be removed and replace with another crewhub, or cargo pods. This makes the donnager very versatile design and has found its way into many of the Republics ship designs.

This are unfinished, they require paths, spec maps, normal maps and some fine tuning and balancing them.

Also REQUIRES BLUE PLANET COMPLETE, as i have used some effects from them for my weapons.

I think i have included everything for the weapons, but may not have, as these are of my own making based of the blue planet UEF weapons.

Big thank you to Darius for helping me finish the Excursor Corvette :)

One very dark screenshot, with one very dark video does a poor job of showing of what exactly these models are, and why someone would want to start using them.

Cool beans, I always liked those designs. I'd just suggest you make some well sized and well lit screenshots (possibly out of engine, maybe just in the modelling program or even p3ds) of each individual ship to showcase them. That way its either for people to window shop what you have.

I see considerable inspiration from the Babylon 5 - Omega class destroyer... particularly the nose.  That said, the same could be said for the UEF ships from BP, so I guess its quite popular.

Yeah I have always loved the omega class destroyers, my number 2 all time favourite earth ship design, next to the BC304 form Stargate.

There is something about the omegas design that just attracts me. Just sad we never got to see it fire its missiles, as I never knew the red pods along the side of the hull were ment to be missiles launchers.

Anyway I just subconsciously did that, with the design. Working on a design for a battlecruiser

Why did you include a "Tables" folder and then put the modular tables in the root folder?

The tables folder is empty and there's a -shp.tbm and a -wep.tbm in the base \Republic Fleet\ folder.

Yeah, they disabled external linking for everyone unless you have a paid subscription.  Which is great, because they're godawful and will probably find that no one will want to pay them anything.

Can't open model file <URDonnager01.pof>

That's an error in the table file, Republic-shp.tbm. You can either rename data/models/URDonnager.pof to data/models/URDonnager01.pof.
Or you can edit Republic-shp.tbm & change the name in the file to URDonnager.pof.

starbug should probably also fix one & update the download ;)

Yep, that worked. And now I feel silly for not making that connection.

Thanks for your help!

Also, starbug mate, thumbs up on the ship designs. They look cool.

I have discovered more problems.

While I can load the Donnager in FRED now, any mission I try to play that has it spawned in at the start crashes, and if it jumps in later the rotators don't spin and the game crashes if I get too close to it.

The game also crashes when I get close to the Heracles.

Unfortunately, it's not showing me an error message, and I don't know where to look for something like an error log.

The other's seem to work fine so far, besides the Excurser's missing turret models.

Hmmm.. that is really weird. I have had none of these issues when testing them. i have done multiple close ups on each ship to for screenshots and combat. Which version of FSOpen are you using?

To get the error log i think and someone please correct me on this, you need to use the debug.exe ie fs2_open_3_7_4-DEBUG in the launcher and that runs the game and does an error log. again i might be wrong on that.

Can any of the more veteran modders give any insight on this, as i have no idea what it could be causing it.

From the FRED2 log above, CapnQwerty might be using version 3.7.4 RC1, in which case updating to 3.7.4 final may fix the issues.

Upgrading to 3.7.4 final fixed the Heracles, and I can fly close to the Donnager without the game crashing, but it still has to jump in after the game starts since it continues to crash if it's already spawned when the mission begins. It's rotators still don't spin either, and none of its weapons will fire or even point at anything.

Looking at the modpack briefly:

The turrets need $special=subsystem under the subsystem properties to be recognised ingame as turrets.
The CrewHub subsystems aren't spinning because there's no velocity specified in the -shp table.
Not sure why it crashes ingame but it's missing Moment of Inertia which won't make the engine happy.

I kitbashed a couple of the Donnager subobjects into a pre-existing ship model and I noticed some strange engine behaviour as well. No crashes, but the ship would disappear if I looked directly at it. Can't remember how I fixed that particular error. The ship also spun wildly when shot, which I managed to fix by generating the MoI in PCS2 (copy pasting the MoI of a similar sized ship didn't work).

Address the above and see if that helps.

Haven't had those particular problems, but I'll keep it in mind if they pop up.

Well, I added $special=subsystem under the $subsystem: (name) line for each turret and got this when I tried opening FRED:

Presumably, that's not where I'm supposed to put it.

With the rotation, I'd guess the subsystem entries need a line that looks something like $velocity: x, but I don't know how to format it.

Also, I'm confused about why the Donnager would need any of this when none of the other 5 do. What does or doesn't it have that makes it different?

That worked. The sections spin, the guns work, and the game doesn't crash.

For some reason.

...hell, whatever, I'm not complaining (much). Thanks for the help you two.

You presume correctly. It needs to go in the subobject properties in the POF file itself.

Hello. I've been using this as part of my fleetpack part of at least one project I'm working on, and I've encountered errors.

Most of the fleetpack, save for the Excursor corvette, have null moments of inertia.

The Donnager science cruiser, the Tempest frigate and the Heracles frigate have mismatched subsystems, including those included in all models that are not listed in ships.tbl, something that causes the game to crash, as well as some not linking into ship, such as invalid subobj_num or model_num in subsystem 'radar02' on the Heracles frigate.

The Olympia and Minnow destroyers, as well as the Tempest frigate, have a single slot in all dock points, short of exactly 2 slots per dock point.

As for the overall improvements, I would like to see PBR maps.

Thank you for the feedback Bryan. How would go about fixing these errors? Ie the null moments of inertia, what is that?
Also PBR maps??

Here's the errors you encountered while running the debug build of FRED2_Open. These errors range from null moments of inertia, having only 1 slots in each dock point instead of 2, and subsystem-related errors.

Warning: Model 'Oylmpia.pof' has 1 slots in dock point '<unnamed bay A>'; models must have exactly 2 slots per dock point.

PBR maps make your models shinier and realistic. At least two maps are needed: -ao and -reflect. -unlit I'm not sure.

What about the texture map "Dauntlessdet"? I never see it in the Blue Planet Complete mod.

Dude, can you move those error logs to Pastebin or something? Or, better yet, give steps to reproduce. That much information is nearly useless, and equally hard to scroll past, on mobile especially.

And let's let starbug sort out these models before we start demanding he learn a whole 'nother skillset.

Sorry but most of that code means nothing to me, for example I have no clue what a null moment of inertia means or how to fix that. I am no coder.

Docking problem I can solve. Same with the subsystems. But null things I have no clue.

Ah, I can explain that one, I think! The MoI is a property of the model used in some physics calculations, but it isn't necessarily present on every model - something like a skybox doesn't need one. If it isn't set on a ship model, however, physics can go... awry. The easiest fix is to let POFC2 generate it for you - it'll whine that it's "not very good at it", but you can ignore that. Alternatively, you can copy it over from a similarly sized ship, also in POFC2.

"Null" might sound like fancy programmer-speak, but if you read it as "missing", you'll be right in every case you're likely to come across. :)

Sometimes this doesn't work, and then having PCS2 generate it does; I'm unaware of any examples of a MoI generated by PCS2 not working.

Maybe we need to teach the community how to calculate multiple integrals so they can get the values themselves. :p

Thank you for the feedback and how to fix the problems. So my next question is can you solve the MOI when actually making the model in 3ds max. As no one has ever mentioned this when I have asked about ship modelling and getting them into the game. I am keen to learn it, I just never knew about this until yesterday.

You just hit the Recalculate button in PCS2 in the sidebar under the Header section:

You don't need to solve it in 3ds max.  It's literally just hitting one button when you're rigging your model in PCS2.

I've tested it out thoroughly and carefully, and I've found out errors, at least for the ships themselves.

URCv Excursor has only one missing entry from the weapons table: Turret04, where "CW88mm-PLCl" is still referenced though.

Code: [Select]
Warning: Unable to find WEAPON_LIST_TYPE string "CW88mm-PLCl" in stuff_int_list

Many possible sources for this error.  Get a programmer!

I hope you resolve all of this. In addition, I would like to see PBR maps.

EDIT: The tables for the destroyers and frigates could be altered to match the POFs. It's easy.

I'd propose a drinking game in which we take a shot every time Bryan rambles about PBR maps but I don't want to be drunk before 10am

NO. I'm posting about the errors encountered while loading the models.

You did request PBR maps again. And please, can you not put so many error traces directly in the thread? They're nearly impossible to scroll pas ton mobile. Could you move them to pastebin or something?

OK. I'll take note of this.

EDIT: Regarding PBR maps, I rather make them myself. What of ambient occlusion? I've been working on them, particularly on Nyctaeus' models.
