Re: What are you playing right now?
I bought Valkyria Chronicles for its steam release.

...the personnel files unlock after your first real combat op, so I'd already played several dozen skirmishes. Then I discovered some fun stuff.

I'd been sending in a twelve-year-old to clear trenches with an SMG, and I'm not sure the fact she actually did it makes it better.

My only Sniper was 15, and already had a kill count in the double digits.

I feel, at the moment, that I am a dick of such scale it can be seen from orbit, that everyone must stop and stare in wonder at the sheer phallic majesty of my behavior. Thanks game. Thanks.

Other selected highlights of my reactions to the game:

Quote
Night - Squad 7, move out!: You fools! You can't say nice things about the mill! Artillery units hear those sorts of things!
Night - Squad 7, move out!: Welkin wants to be a teacher. To "give back". Well, this will end well.
Night - Squad 7, move out!: Oh hey I know that whis-yup there goes the mill.

Quote
Night - Squad 7, move out!: Note to the AI: do not withdraw under fire without cove-holy **** what is that.
Night - Squad 7, move out!: It's like the bastard child of a Char B1 and an M3 Grant.

Quote
Night - Squad 7, move out!: Excuse me, I appear to have left my world-conquering supertank in my barn.
Night - Squad 7, move out!: The Edelweiss: Half Panzer IV, half Conqueror 120mm Gun Tank, all murder.

Quote
Night - Squad 7, move out!: Tank destroyed, baby delivered. The Edelweiss doesn't care how many people it has to kill, it can just make more of them!

Last enemy tank sighted.  Only part of that VK 30.01H poking out from behind that rock is a couple inches of commander's cupola.  We're half way across Sand River their is no way an M1A1 76mm is going to hit that.

Finally beat that Forgotten mod for Tiberium Wars. Opinion: Well-done if somewhat sad story. Good creativity with the Forgotten units, Longhorns, Slicers, and Fiend Herds are particularly fun, but it's hard to say exactly what the faction is supposed to specialize in other than combined arms. Mission design is way harder than retail, to the point of absurdity on the fourth mission (the fifth is better only because you have A. heavy assault units and B. a superweapon). Overall, I'm impressed by the production quality, and it was a fun challenge, but it would have gotten maddening if it hadn't been so short.

Been playing Pokemon Y for a while.  Not really what I expected.  It seems... smaller than the older games (blue and gold being the only two I've played to completion, a little bit of emerald on an emulator).  Also, all the internet connected and mini game stuff is confusing.  All the layers that have been added over the generations have built up and made it quite complex now.

Finished Saint's Row 4 main quest, to finish off the side quests when time permits. Saw Crusader for free on Origin; nothing beats the overpowered rocket launcher in that one...

(and  at SR4 rift quest console code 'RELEASE FS3' invalid command)
Inferno plz

Re: What are you playing right now?
I'm playing the new Thief. I like it a lot so far, at about the halfway mark. Not sure why this game was panned. It does have its flaws (like all the previous games did), but the core gameplay is great and the levels are well designed. It even lets you save properly, which is almost unheard of in FPSs these days.

That was probably the one I got stuck on. Maybe I should check it out again. I think I still have my old saves.

The hardest part of the mission, as I recall, was establishing a forward base on the west side of the river after I'd secured the east side. There's a mid-sized island about midway along the west shore with bridges linking it to the west. GDI has some turrets and two Juggernauts gaurding it. If you sanitize the island with airstrikes, it's a great spot to set up shop. Oh, and whatever hoops you have to jump through, capture those two Juggernaut husks! The Forgotten are pretty weak in the artillery department; having some proper artillery will make killing those oversized bases a whole lot easier.

Anyway, I'm considering doing the Wing Commander series next. Is the whole series pretty good, or did it not get good until game X/stop being good after game Y?

Re: What are you playing right now?
Prophecy is the only one I enjoy playing. The thing is, that's just it, playing. The gameplay is weak in those that came before Prophecy. Imo. The story of Prophecy is weak compared to the story of the other games. I've only played III and IV, but watching the early ones, they do not look fun to play at all. They look worse than III and IV.

I didn't find III fun to play even many years ago. And even despite this genre of games being my favourite.

The first three games and their expansions are essential, the fourth has by far the strongest story but the gameplay starts to dip, Prophecy is kind of blah, Secret Ops was a return to form at the time, but the story part was website-hosted and may well have been lost to history since rendering it a man with only one leg.

Re: What are you playing right now?
Arg! Got WC1 for free, did not realize how badly dated it was. My apologies to WC fans, but my brain just can't process 3D gameplay with 2D graphics. If the story is as good as they say, it really deserves a good remake.  :(

EDIT: looking at screenshots, WC2's graphics look a lot better. Trying to decide if I should go for it even though I'm skipping the first game.

EDIT: and then I realized that those screenshots were actually from WC3.  :sigh:
