I got the Unreal anthology the other day and have installed it and i found a problem with unreal 2, well more of an annoyance really. When playing the game i keep getting a crackling sound whenever somebody talks or weapons are fired. Yet the other unreal titles in the pack sound and play fine and since UT2004 use's the same engine as unreal2 i had expected the same problem but its not there. I had expected Unreal and Return to Na Pali to be the ones to cause the problems. I have searched tje Unreal forums and can't find any solutions or much to do with Unreal 2, even Atari's website no longer has the game listed. So does anyone here have any ideas?

my system spec is

Operating System: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
  Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q6600  @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
  Memory: 3322MB RAM
  DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
  Driver Version: 6.14.0011.7824
  Soundcard: SigmaTel Audio1 5.1

if there is any consistancy with the Shivans, it's their lack of consistancy - -Norbert-

It works fine for me. I played through it again last year. Turn off any EAX or hardware audio setting in the options and see if that helps. There is also a patch for the game, so make sure you have that.

You could've just gotten them from GOG.com fully patched and optimized for the most current systems.

i tried to go for the patch, but it turns out the anothology version is already fully patched up. I also tried renaming the openal and i lost the sound completely, Ah well looks like i will have to put up with it.

looks like you dont have openal installed
get the OpenAL Installer for Windows
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx

then rename the openal32.dll in unreal2\system

I remember once when I was playing KotOR, my audio got messed up because my graphics settings were too high... any chance that's an issue here?

try renaming openal32.dll
Wait, what? Why would he do that?

That sounds like a performance issue, rather than a causative problem from the video to the audio.  Unless it was coded poorly, of course.

so the game would use the openal32.dll in windows\system32 as opposed to the one in the game folder
