Title: Stuff we saw on youtube! (redux!)
Post by: Scourge of Ages on December 15, 2020, 07:27:40 pm
Rather than unburying the 18-month-stale thread, how about a new place to drop videos you found interesting that aren't music?

I'll start:

Kurzgesagt's videos on nukes are very good. They got so popular that the Red Cross at some point asked to make another one.

That's a great channel, but when it comes to pure Science I normally switch to something else. Take a look at how the subject of strange matter and strange stars has been analyzed, and with notable differences I may add, by Kurzgesagt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_8yK2kmxoo) and Space Time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4RNGRyzt10).

Watched Drachinifel's video on the sinking of HMS Hood last night.  He goes into great detail about possible causes of the fatal explosion and why some of the popular theories (including plunging fire) are probably not the culprit.  Good stuff, if you're into naval history.

I've seen a few Spacetime videos and I was very impressed by the level of depth they were able to communicate. I'm so used to pop science videos just being dumbed down summaries of Wikipedia articles but I learned some very novel ideas from that channel.

Moths are simply butterflies in their work clothes. So unless you are also anti-butterfly......

But yeah, it's all fun and games having a live animal on your hand, but it can rapidly go wrong.

I've gone hard into this channel recently. He does concise but informative videos on disasters and other odd historical events, with a particular focus on nuclear incidents.  He did something of a prequel to Chernobyl, which is obviously going to need its own series.

And he also ordered a physical CD copy, because come on why would you not.

And now the saga continues, because after he made the video the fine WinRAR people sent him a bonus package.  Wonders never cease.

Really cool video from Scott Manley about the Apollo 11 lunar ascent stage Eagle. Later Apollo missions intentionally crashed their ascent stages into the lunar surface to generate impacts that could be measured by the seismometers placed there, but 11's was allowed to float free. Because the Moon's gravitational field is "lumpy," it's hard to get a stable orbit around it, and without active control many orbits get more and more eccentric until they impact the surface. Because of that, it was generally assumed that 11's ascent stage most likely crashed into the lunar surface at some point over the past 50 years. So someone tried working out a possible impact site using NASA-developed orbital simulation software, and they found that reports of its demise may have been somewhat exaggerated:

EDIT: This wasn't age restricted when I posted it here for sure. It's an innuendo studios video about "The Gandhi Trap", specifically about protests and how we talk about them being "non-violent". One of the salient points it makes is that Gandhi's protests, famously considered non-violent, aren't non-violent. Yes, the protestors did not start violence, but the authorities definitely did a lot of violence to them.

So I would post Hbomberguy's critique of Deus Ex Human Revolution here but it's three hours, thirty-three minutes and thirty-three seconds long, which is way to ****ing long for my tastes (even though I did watch it in one sitting, err)...

Instead I have a podcast for y'all! Behind the Bastards, a podcast that looks into ... bastards, like Tsar Nicholas II, Hitler and Stalin, but also some lesser known people like King Norodom Sihanouk (the king of Cambodia before Pol Pot took over). It's, in short, a history podcast, and I find it very interesting because it either dives into lesser known people or lesser known aspects of well known people.

The currently running series is highly interesting becuase it focuses on protestant christianity in America, and why and how a lot of it got corrupted by the very people that Jesus Christ opposed. (https://pca.st/lbj1zz6m) It's something I've been wondering about for a very long time.

HBomb and Robert Evans are two of my favorite creators on the internet. You ever listen to Secretly Incredibly Fascinating? It's by Alex Schmidt, one of Robert's old coworkers and he guests sometimes there.

Okay so a day ago Mito posted this on discord:

As a guy living in the Netherlands it's very interesting to see how a Canadian views our cities. I wasn't aware that some of the most dire roads I've seen are just... standard in North America.

Meanwhile in the more grim aspects of things, LegalEagle neatly explains that US police forces do not have a duty to protect (whilst medical emergency personel does). It's one hell of a combination with qualified immunity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl6yXjdMlHI).

Big fan of Not Just Bikes, it's a great channel for urban planning in general. Sadly Australia is blighted by the stroads scourge as well, and suburbs were a mistake.

His channel keeps popping up in my recommendations, and as someone who's spent pretty much his whole life in suburban hell, it's incredibly eye-opening.

I'd like to second (fourth?) the recommendation for Not Just Bikes. Every one of those videos just makes me sad to live here in California.

Also: Sophie and Legal Eagle are also great

I wasn't aware of
1) how awful the sheer agression in the anglosphere towards cyclists is today
and 2) how it is a very recent phenonemon.

What the **** is wrong with people that ****ing bicycles are now part of a "culture war".

I'll admit to being guilty of that on occasion. I live in part of suburbia that has a lot of narrower two-lane roads where bike lanes aren't remotely a thing, so on the rare occasions when I encounter bike riders on the road, it's usually in the sense of being inconvenienced by them and having to figure out a way around them. It's not really the rider's fault in those cases, but it doesn't make it any less personally annoying. Fair or not, I think it becomes easier from a cognitive sense to lump all cyclists together because there aren't that many of them on the roads around here, whereas everyone drives cars, so they become that "different group" that humans are so good at singling out, and their traffic infractions stick out in your brain more. Like, I still remember getting physically hit by a (fortunately slow-moving) bike in college which failed to yield a clearly-marked crosswalk to me when I was on foot, and that probably colors my thinking on bikes to this day. It's definitely not a fair way to think, but it still happens.
