Ten years ago, on the first weekend of October, Silent Threat was released.
Unfortunately, Silent Threat: Reborn isn't ready to release yet. But we have something almost as good. :)
Trailer
FeralHosting (https://porphyrion.feralhosting.com/datacorder/fsport_files/videos/str-trailer.mov) YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJwdkesPRXc)
71.5 MB. Requires Quicktime, or something that plays MOV files.
Assembly, text captions, and effects were done by Steven Trauger (http://www.stvp.net). The GTI logo was created by Tom Fetterolf (http://www.formiusdesign.com/) based on a design by Volition.

I expecially like the credits thing at the end and the Earth/fiery bird motif.
I can't wait! I'm so pants at the original ST... :doubt: That one mission where you lead the assualt on the GTI station. Maybe this one will be more lenient so I can succeed without lowering the difficulty or cheating.
-
Just too cool to be true!
-
The credits thing at the end was funny...
They forgot to add the blue screen the-following-trailer-is-rated-for-all-audiences thing at the beginning. :D
-
The credits thing at the end was funny...
Thanks. :)
Though the lack of HTL ships/mediavps was a bit disappointing :(
Funny story behind that. I had to use the 3.5.5 version of the SCP to record with, because neither retail nor 3.6.9 worked.
This, of course, won't prevent you from using the mediaVPs when playing, however. :)
It might have been better to pick another music track.
That one's been used EVERYWHERE.
Tough. :p I've wanted to use it in a FreeSpace video ever since I saw it in the Two Towers trailer, and it kept getting pushed back until now. Besides, it's still good music.
-
Oh, me wants. Now.
-
The guy in the trailer needs to aim though :nervous:
I've posted positive feednback on youtyube though before i read this thread :D
-
There was a distinct absence of the vaunted GTD GeeTeeDee. I'm slightly disappointed.
-
Can it be easily redone with more graphical effects some day (soon), to appeal to a wider audience?
-
No. That would require re-recording all the in-game footage.
-
By the time we worked out what was wrong with FRAPS and the new builds, recorded the footage, and edited it together... you'd be able to play it on your own computer. ;)
-
It's a nice trailer.
-
Shiku objected that there is simple dogfighting and not particulary anything very characteristic of the mod, but at my opinion, I liked that after "But they arenť the only enemies" there was a fight against terran ships. Someone who hasnt known the mod can be sorta surprised and thats what I liked a lot.
About the missing GTD - Do you mean the Hades? It was displayed during the last few moments, no ?
-
The original Silent Threat mission 3 had an Orion named "GTD".
-
Will the GTD *Blank* have a proper name?
Like for instance the GTD Orestes...But no ship exists with that name in the GTA's Database.
You know that old gimmick
-
The "GTD" has been renamed. Or re-designated, I guess.
-
It's been revealed. :drevil:
-
Like for instance the GTD Orestes...But no ship exists with that name in the GTA's Database.
Orestes, heh.
-

Isn't that BP?
-

Same here, I'd really like a hi-res of that logo thing.
-

I needed a name thats not used in official FS canon ie in retail FS1, ST and FS2. AND i took the name from an EA ship class from the B5 universe; The Orestes Monitor...
Okay lets say the GTD *blank* is called the GTD Orestes in ST:R
When you encounter the Orestes in mission 3, it had the orders and codes showing that they have the authority to pick up the Einstein's escape pods. However, there is no ship registered with the GTA as the GTD Orestes. So the ship vanishes along with the survivers it picked up.
You know the old "prisoner transfer to a disappearing transport" conspiracy gimmick.

You know the old "prisoner transfer to a disappearing transport" conspiracy gimmick.
B5, Season 2, Episode 2, "Revelations"
-
Yes just like that. Has that been actively included in ST:R? - That you are informed that according to official listings there is no ship called the GTD *Whatever*
-

Thanks. A friend of Goober's (whose name escapes me at the moment) modeled it, and I animated it. It's the official GTI Insignia.
And, ah... how big did you want it, again? ;7
-
It's the official GTI Insignia.
Oh right. It reminds me of the insignia on the side of that Herc in FS2's intro cutscene.
-
DING DING DING! We have a winner!
-
I've split off the music discussion into its own separate thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,57000.0.html). Let's keep this one on topic. :)
-
Oh...
So that's why there was a dead Hades there.
-
Okay lets say the GTD *blank* is called the GTD Orestes in ST:R
I see absolutely no reason for giving the much-loved GeeTeeDee a less catchy unofficial name.
-
But to call it the GTD GeeTeeDee looks weird coming from a remake of a canon campaign, especially since Axem's used it in JAD2:EB already.
Perhaps it should be called GTD Sesquipedalian. :drevil:
...just kidding. How about a word with the three letters in it?
-
So something going on in the FS2 intro cutscene relates to GTI? Presumably also explaining how a Hades ended up crashed there?
-
Go watch the FS2 intro again. Then come back.
-
So the fighter was a GTI fighter? Nice.
-
I'd like to have that squadron logo, I have always loved it...
-
Well it also explains why the Hades was on that planet, the battle between the Hades and GTA forces takes place in Deneb.
It is also interesting that that's where the Ancient information that enabled Bosch to turn on the Konossos was found.
We also see a science cruiser that could well be the Einstien in front of the construction platform the Hades is in.
-
It also supports the notion the Legion was at the Battle of Deneb if there were GTI fighters there.
It all makes sense.
-
Well the Legion was shown to have been destroyed by the Lucifer.
Maybe the Legion was GTI?
-
Things may make sense but I still want that squadron logo!
-
Maybe the Legion was GTI?
Err.
The Legion was the flagship of GTI R&D wasn't it? (according to some mythic interview)
-
I would like to point out that the destroyer in the FS2 intro cutscene was never officially named by Volition. Some player asked them if it could be called "Legion" and Volition basically said "Yeah, sure, why the hell not?"
-
So...it's fanon accepted by :v:?
-
Basically...Yeah
-
So really it could be called anything, but the most commonly accepted name is Legion...
-
So...it's fanon accepted by :v:?
From the Hard-Light wiki on the GTD Legion:
An Orion-class destroyer is shown being destroyed by the SD Lucifer in the FreeSpace 2 intro cutscene. Volition was fairly clear this ship was not the Galatea. A community member asked if the ship could be called the Legion. Volition responded, "Call it that if you want," so the ship is generally referred to as the Legion.
-

Yeah for all we know the designer of cutscene could have intended it to be the Llanfair...??? you know that town in Wales with the insanely long name, the one that Da Goob used in DEM. But in the fan community it is more commonly known as the Legion...which is a great deal easiar to spell and pronounce
-
Try using the full chemical name of Titin, perhaps... :drevil:
-

Meh...Legion...he should have said Snuffleupagus... :doubt:
-
Or Carl, TrashMan or Mobius
BTW mobius, how come your name is no-longer in rainbow effect?
---
Meanwhile, back on topic any chance of that squad logo being released?
-
Nope...Mobius could be an appropriate name for a science cruiser, though...
-
Nope...Mobius could be an appropriate name for a science cruiser, though...
Or as a faction... :nervous:
*runs*
-
Seriously, August Ferdinand Mobius was a mathematician(or whatever it's spelled)...
As for the faction, let's keep INFA out from this discussion :nervous:
-
Meanwhile, back on topic any chance of that squad logo being released?
Maybe. If you prove yourselves worthy... :drevil:
-
I wonder if you'll play through the battle of Deneb, watch the Legion be destroyed, and then see one of your wingmates shot down by a Manticore.
That'd be interesting.
EDIT: except you're not a GTI pilot in ST:R, are you. Whoops.
-

And it's set after the Lucy destruction anyway so it wouldn't happen.

Err.
The Legion was the flagship of GTI R&D wasn't it? (according to some mythic interview)
In our storyline the Legion is the GTI flagship, mobile headquarters, internal affairs coordinator and liason with the GTA.
You can imagine how its loss at the Battle of Deneb would complicate things.
And you are, in fact, a pilot for the GTI in Silent Threat and ST:R. It's the whole point, really.
-
Yeah. It's not the entire GTI that goes rogue, just part of it.
-
Well this whole campaign isn't canon, and it would make sense for ST:R to name it the Legion, if it was involved with their campaign, because it's one of the closest things we have to fanon right now.
If they didn't, I'd understand, but unless they had a purpose for not calling it the Legion, I'd be downright confused as to why.
So the Legion is fighting the Shivans in the midst of the Great War why? I mean, I think they started the war somehow, but you'd think they'd let the GTA take the brunt of the attack once the Shivans actually attacked...
Or was it the Shivans who attacked the GTI? Was something the GTI doing the motivation for the Shivans to attack? In that case why did they attack the Vasudans and the GTA?
-
I always thought that GTI was part of the GTA. If the Shivans attack the GTA, they would attack the GTI too.
It's also good to remember that Shivans are xenocidal; by default, they will kill an entire species and take no prisoners.
-
Well, it like the CIA connection to the US goverment.
GTI is the intellgence agency of the GTA
-
When you're talking about taking on something like the Lucifer, any Orion is presumably fair game to get deployed, GTI or not.
-
Why would the GTA deploy a GTI destroyer to face a Shivan group led by the Lucifer?
No doubt a GTI destroyer is far more precious than a regular have. It carries special equipment, systems and weapons(all to be used in covert operations and such). I don't see the point in wasting such a warship in a "regular" battle.
...unless the GTI's tasks go well beyond that of a normal Intelligence.
-
Sometimes, sacrifices must be made to ensure the success of a larger operation (cue Ronald Weasly in Harry Potter and the Sorceror's/Philosopher's Stone).
-
...unless the GTI's tasks go well beyond that of a normal Intelligence.
Perhaps the rogue Terran intelligence branch had a hidden motive in deploying the Legion, but got too close or underestimated the Lucifer's offensive capabilities.

Um, because . . . we're talking about the complete extinction of the human race maybe?
-
Vasudan race, actually, in that particular battle.

Including, perhaps, some that they wanted to try to breach the Lucifer's shields with?
-
Maybe this is when "the Lucifer attacked the Vasudan outpost in the Diones system, and the Vasudans three different missile prototypes, with no luck whatsoever." But of course that would've been a Vasudan destroyer not the Legion...
-
wtf is that "quote" from?
-
Isn't that FS1?
-
wtf is that "quote" from?
The FreeSpace Ref Bible (the canonicity of which debatable)
-
Debatable? How? It's the Word of :v:. If anything in there isn't contradicted by what we see in-game, I'd say it's canon.

That's my view too, I only said it so Mars wouldn't take out the forks.

Galemp and i have the same view of the ref bible

Me too! :(

I like the FSRefBible. Nice concept art they got there. :)

And that the intro text during the FS2 intro identifies it as the Battle of Deneb.
-
Diones was never identified. It could be the Vasudan name for Deneb is what I'm getting at here.
