http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/
They've launched an official blog, and I'm very excited. :)
Unsurprisingly they are targeting ubuntu first. Other distros may follow.
-
A small step for Steam, but a huge step for Linux ? :)
-
ughh ubuntu it used to be good till they started cramming unity down my throat. oh well that's what minimal installs from the ground up are for and steam on linux is good motivation to pick it up again
-
enter linux mint for ubuntu done properly :p
-
Alright! Looking forward to this :p

Never did get what people's problem with Unity was. Sure, it's different, but I for one like my OS to have a half-way decent (and decent looking) GUI. I absolutely hate the boxed in feeling the bars at the top and bottom of the Gnome desktop create.

I second this. I don't mind Unity at all, but I hate the double-bar Gnome setup.
That's why there are so many different distros. :D

I have no problems with Unity and GNOME3 even. I prefer KDE or Cinnamon though.
I wouldn't worry too much about the initial steam release being ubuntu only. I doubt much effort will be necessary to rip open the .deb and install things on other distros.
-
Two things I want to add to this discussion.
1: Native Steam Client! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! *Happydance*
2: Anyone who's at all put off by unity/gnome3 should really consider trying kde. Kubuntu and/or the kde mint spin have been very nearly a perfect desktop experience for me, this past year, ever since they got the kde 4.0/4.1 issues straightened out.

hmmm i wonder if GLaDOS would say anything unique in the linux version of portal (if there is going to be one)

Serious Sam 3 coming to Linux.
Linux may be pretty fun soon.

this is no big surprise, as i believe, both TFE & TSE and the sequel were previously ported to linux as well, so Croteam should have a reasonably portable codebase anyhow.

Linux becoming a viable platform for a majority of highend PC games would be beyond awesome... would be ;)

When Unity first showed up, it was full of bugs. Now though, it's very amazing. I myself was never put off by the fact that it had lots of bugs even in the beginning, so I felt that it got from good to better.
Really, there's no reason to be put off by Ubuntu. As been said, just because it goes to Ubuntu first doesn't mean you have to stick with Unity. Try the other desktops environment if you hate it so much. It's beyond a doubt that Ubuntu has the largest share of Linux users, so it makes perfect sense to start there first.

Not really surprising considering that Gabe has already said that he considers Windows 8 to be a catastrophe (http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18996377).
I wouldn't celebrate too much yet. It's quite possible that this is simply an attempt to get MS to back down over certain plans for Windows 8.
-
Even so, it still means Steam will be available for Ubuntu. ;)

Fixed that for you. The other way kind of implied that the OS itself would suck (I have no idea, I haven't looked into it yet), which isn't quite what he said.

Yeah but if MS back down tomorrow, it could result in you having Steam for Ubuntu and 1 game port. :p
-
:blah: We can't let that happen.

It's safe to say that several of these (http://steamlinux.flibitijibibo.com/index.php?title=Native_Games) will make their way to steam as long as it makes its way to linux.
-
Not only that, but if Valve's already ported one Source game, I'm guessing the others won't be far behind.
-
I'm pretty sure Windows 8 is a train wreck. They're forcing the tablet/touchscreen interface down our throats and trying to more quickly usher in the obsoletion of the mouse (touchpad/trackball)/keyboard interface.
Which is an absolute load of ****, if you ask me.
So yeah, Mr. Newell was pretty much right, and yeah, Steam on Linux is awesome, and for me, having this combined with Linux support going into the Unity game engine (http://unity3d.com/unity/4/faq#linux) (what I dabble into outside of FSO), this is going to open up tons of possibilities. (http://www.3dsplaza.com/smilies/icon_awesomeface.png)
-
I don't think the mouse is going to be anywhere near obsolete in our lifetime anyway. So, so much for that.

I've no idea what all the Linux jargain means.... But i'm happy for those of you that have mastered it and are soon to recieve gaming nirvana.

its because ubuntu sucks donkey balls for anyone who has actually used a computer for something sane.

Opinion? OK, opinion:
No it doesn't.
Mayhaps it could work better, but, they've been working on that. Maybe not to please everyone, but I wouldn't say everyone outside a niche of a niche of users use computers for insane things. lolwut? OKIE....
I'm sure ubuntu drives you nuts. That's fine, but then again, so does the Office ribbon for some people. Including me. However, I'm open-minded enough to admit the Office ribbon does seem to be a bit more optimized for certain things. I just wish they'd kept the menus accessible by all the old keyboard shortcuts in Office 2010.

Try Linux Mint with Cinnamon and then tell me that again.

I actually have both, so I will. Just a matter of getting the time to burn the DVDs and actually try them. I have the .isos already. This is about Unity, isn't it? :p

Its on the overall useability front actually. I dont need something that pretends to be a bastard child between mac os x and roadkill.
-
Unity is designed well enough so that both Windows and Mac users can migrate to Ubuntu almost effortlessly. It accomplishes this goal very well.

It's really not that terrible. It's more useable than Windows 8's new start menu.

I just want to reiterate that the first os stop for people considering switching from win to linux should be a KDE distro in the 4.8/4.9 range. If you want to be able to throw the steam native client on there and just go, I suggest kubuntu or the mint kde spin, both of which should be directly binary compatible. KDE has a slightly more familiar ui paradigm, to my mind, for windows powerusers, and none of that handholding unity-so-your-grandparents-can-use-it stuff.
