OK, so I've reinstalled FreeSpace 2 (actually due to FRED 2 not loading), installed Freespace 3_6_5 Open, and everything's fine, EXCEPT FRED 2 not loading.

It simply doesn't load...what's the problem?? I click it twice, and it doesn't open.

You aren't, by chance, implying that you've DOWNLOADED AN ILLEGAL COPY OF FS2 and are now ASKING US FOR HELP ON INSTALLING THAT ILLEGAL COPY?

Marcov, we can not and in fact will not help you to get an illegally downloaded copy to work. We also can not help you regarding problems with a version of the exe that is that old.

To elaborate: There is no way for us to tell what is wrong with your install, since you seemingly got FS2 retail from a source that is inherently unreliable. There is no way for us to tell if your FSO install is correct, since there are no official packages that distribute FSO 3.6.5.

So, here's what you do. Get FS2 from a legitimate source. Follow the steps in the various install guides found here (More specifically, this one: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47640.0 ). Then, if you have problems, first consult the FAQ ( http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.0 ), and if the answer to your problem is not found there, post again.

This thread can go nowhere but wrong, so I'm closing it.

Marcov, if you have a good explanation on why Daemon Tools Pro is related to installing FSO, I genuinely would like to hear it. And we can help you afterwards. But, if you don't have a good explanation, you really are on your own with this mess. The main point being: many people here don't like those who have not bought legitimate copies of the FS games or do not buy them now from Good Old Games.

I have a copy from Good Old Games.

I also have ISOs I have backed up from my copies of FS I bought on eBay.  Since I already have the .ISOs, I use Daemon Tools or Virtual CloneDrive when I play FS.  (Well, it's been a while, the disk might not be necessary now, I forget... but if they are I have the backups.)

So I actually have two copies of FS that I legally bought... and if I was in Marcov's shoes, I would feel a bit put off by being accused of thievery.

...Which is not to say that it isn't a pirated version; it might very well be.  But I say innocent until proven otherwise is the best way to handle things.

Marcov, is that a copy of a disk that you own?  If it's not, no big deal, just go to www.gog.com and buy FS... FS1 and Silent Threat are $5.99, and FS2 is $5.99.   So, $11.98 and you own the entire shebang.  If it is a legal copy that you're currently using, let us know and we can help.  

3.6.5 is ancient.  Get the latest using the install guide The E pointed you to.

Post back if you have any problems, we'll help you out.

Yeah, I think there's something inherently dangerous in assuming that Marcov is running an illegal copy of the game right off the bat.  As jr2 noted, Daemon Tools can be used with the legitimately-purchased game disks; I've known a number of people (whom I assume have copious HD space) who back up most of their games to .ISOs and use the software to play them off the HD, eliminating the need for disk swaps.  And even if Marcov's copy is illegitimate, that's no reason to jump all over him.  Don't forget that this community actively promoted illegitimate downloads of the game for quite some time when it wasn't available legally, so anyone who hasn't been around the community over the past year or two (and since Marcov mentioned 3.6.5, that's a reasonable assumption) may not even know about GOG. Maybe we should tone the rhetoric down a notch and get the whole story first.

I should also note that he had a running 3.6.10 install, at least according to his past posts. Just why he chose to use a version of the exe from 2005 is beyond me, though.

I used to have like every version of FSOpen from... I dunno, it actually did date back to 3.6.5 I think... or was it even older?  I forget, but I had all the .exes in the FS2 dir until I realized I had like an entire CDs worth of space being taken up by FSOpen executables.  

EDIT: And yes, Marcov should post here.  Unless he's a legit user who has been offended and decided not to come back... or a non-legit user who has decided not to come back.  A loss either way, as non-legit users can simply buy FS2 from GOG and have done with it, as it's a reasonable price.  Unless of course, they feel that they shouldn't have to pay for anything.  In which case I guess it's not a loss.



BTW, on that topic... it's not really necessary to have FS1 / ST to get FSPort / ST:R, correct?  If you're going to enforce rules and regs, you have to go all the way... if one has a copy of FS2 but not FS1 / ST, then they don't have the rights to play through FSPort / ST:R, as those conversions use FS1 / ST intellectual property.

Guys, I know we stopped providing any assistance in obtaining fs2 for free, but the fact is people have ISOs from a _long_ time ago likely still sitting around.  There's no reason to refuse to help someone out in that case.  We don't even know if he meant he was using it for an FS2 ISO or what.  Maybe he has a backup of a legal copy.  Maybe he's not even running it for FSO but just happens to have it for some other ISOs and leaves it running.  Give him the benefit of the doubt, sheesh.  Maybe he has a copy of one of the original Shivan's installers or something that included with FS2.  We distributed those officially here at one point, might as well not chastise him for using one now.

Yeah, sorry about that. I've been a bit edgy lately. But I too was waiting for Marcov to comment on the matter and he didn't. And since he's now asking for help with ASW, he obviously managed to get his installation working.
