Autoinstaller didn't quite work
I looked in the forums for a thread to answer this question and couldn't find one. Anyway, I used the autoinstaller (keep in mind that I ended up handling the downloading overnight and my phone card connection tends to die every so often so I'm not sure I got the whole thing) and it said it finished when I woke up this morning, but nothing seems to have changed. I tried using the open launcher in the freespace2 folder; and it worked (it think... kinda), but it also said... I can't remember what it said, and my fiddling with it seems to have cancelled out that particular message. Something about "bini in the same directory" or other. Using FS2's start menu launcher didn't work obviously. I really loved FS2's original version and I'd really like to see what the new graphics have done with it, so any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Autoinstaller didn't quite work
Could you post a FreeSpace 2 Open log file? Run a debug build (should look like 3.6.12_INF_d.exe), then go into your /data/ subfolder and grab fs2_open.log. Post it here.

That will give us your setup so we can figure out the problem.

(Did you select mediavps_3612 as a mod?)

Re: Autoinstaller didn't quite work
I couldn't find the debugger, but I tried applying the mod.
This is what happened when I tried to apply the media vps mod...

Weapon explosion 'Subach_Impact' does not have an LOD0 anim!
<no module>! KiFastSystemCallRet
<no module>! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
<no module>! SCP_DumpStack + 354 bytes
<no module>! Warning + 430 bytes
<no module>! weapon_explosions::Load + 296 bytes
<no module>! parse_weapon + 7848 bytes
<no module>! parse_weaponstbl + 172 bytes
<no module>! parse_modular_table + 267 bytes
<no module>! weapon_init + 101 bytes
<no module>! game_init + 1900 bytes
<no module>! game_main + 519 bytes
<no module>! WinMain + 330 bytes
<no module>! __tmainCRTStartup + 358 bytes
<no module>! WinMainCRTStartup + 15 bytes
<no module>! RegisterWaitForInputIdle + 73 bytes

It gave an option to use the debugger and when I did fs2 open crashed or so windows said.

While I'm a fair hand with some things, I'm also a little slow on the uptake sometimes when it comes to stuff like this, so sorry in advance if a fumble around a little every now and then.

Re: Autoinstaller didn't quite work
Okay, somebody broke the installer bad. The 3.6.13 update for the MVPs is present but the rest of the MVPs aren't.

You have two options. Delete the 3.6.13 update folder, and play the game with no graphical upgrades.

Or, download the 3.6.12 MediaVPs from the FreeSpace Upgrade Project board, place them in mediavps_3612, and enjoy the shiny goodness.

What else did the installer grab? Do you have fsport, blueplanet, blueplanet2, derelict, transcend, any of those folders?

You don't need the disc in the drive.

OMG. Please set the resolution and colour depth to at least 1024x768 and 32 bits, respectively. Also, that GPU is just barely in the minimum specs for this game.

This may become a problem.

Re: Autoinstaller didn't quite work
Okay...
Battuta; I have Freespace/ Silent Threat's retail variants and my connection is fairly problematic as to bandwidth (seriously, 6 six hours for the Media VPs and open alone) so I kept it really streamlined.

In light of what the E said though I might not upgrade it after all and opt to wait till I can get a new computer... which leads me to my final question.

If I uninstall Freespace 2 and then delete what's left of the folder from the games directory, that should clear everything up, right? I'm not worried about losing anything since this is a fresh install.

Oh, one more thing... are any of the TC mods freestanding so I can still play them regardless of which FS2 version I'm running?

Re: Autoinstaller didn't quite work
You can play without the graphical enhancements by just selecting 'No Mod' in the launcher.  Then you don't really need to delete anything.

A 'TC' is generally freestanding around here, but I don't think any of those are available with the installer.  The only released TCs are The Babylon Project, the BtRL demo and Wing Commander Saga Prologue, I think.  There's also The Minbari Project but that's using a significantly modified fork of the FSO engine.

Re: Autoinstaller didn't quite work
All right. Good luck, and come back soon!

You know, there are people with crappier cards who still play and enjoy the game...a fair number of them, even. It's reasonably scaleable.
