Title: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on December 05, 2008, 03:39:16 pm
Finally, it's here.

*****

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2c937bcb38ef65c1ab1eab3e9fa335ca25c30194ef361344

3 files:
FOW_COTS1 - contains maps, models, hud, effects, sounds
FOW_COTS2 - contains insignias, interface, cbanims, voice, music
FOW_COTCS_C - mission and table files
Extra - a few loading screen, Herc3 fix and the new Sizif superfreighter

*COTS_FIX*  <----- fixes and improves missions

To save space FS1 music is not included (aside from 2-3 tracks), so I'd recommend getting it from FS post. Campaign should work without it tough.

This is now an official release, as I feel that all the bugs have been squashed. Many thanks to Titan for his help.

NOTE TO CAMPAIGN MAKERS:
The campaign includes the very latest versions of all of my ships.
Minor tweaks to increase eye-candy and performance have bene done on nearly everything.

Tthe list with the location and triggers of various easter eggz
Spoiler:

M01  - scan the liners comm system
M02 (I spy) - scan one of the freighters
M03 (hidden asteriod base) - for a medal, scan the cargo.
M03b (the Rabbit. Or something like that) - a cargo container will pop up near you during the mission (with a warning message) blow it up and then come close to the satellite
M4RR (Crippling Blow) - there's a container floating where the Arcadia used to be. Scan it (HLP gag)
M13 (A Daunting Task) - fly into Dauntlesses hangar bay
M16 (the Good Sheppard) - scan one of cargo containers near the vasudan asteroid base. Can be activated at any time. I luv this gag
M18 (Jack in the Box) - scan or destroy a floating vasudan freighter hulk. It's right below you when the mission starts. Do it fast - preferably before the Inquisitor comes
M19 (the Chase) - There's a cargo container right behind you. Scan it (or blow it up. Can't remember which)
M20 - the gag is audio only and I think it's on by default. If not, you turn it on in the Jack in the Box mission or by typing my name

dragonsniper confused him with the statement about TBP.
(carbine 7 interpreted it like you need TBP for this, but in reality, TBP is just the reason he didn't say 'downloading now!')

So what kind of a campaign is this? Do I need to make a seperate folder for it or do I just copy past everything and click mediavps and start playing?

Unless of course you want to have a fudged up install, then be my guest. :)

Didn't  I put a readme in the COTS_C.rar?

K, long story short - make a folder named FOW_COTS in your Freespace2 directory.
Unpack all 3 (4) files in there.
Everything should be put in it's designated subfolder.

Now, I'm also assuming you have mediavps in a folder named mediavps.
If you have, just select the FOW_COTS folder in the launcher under mods.

If not, edit the mod.ini and make sure the bolded line points towards the mediavps folder. Then select FOW_COTS in the launcher and play.

[launcher]

infotext     = FOW: Coming Of The Storm;

secondrylist = ,mediavps;

When I downloaded it yesterday the unpacked contents where folders not .vp s. If this is the case then usevpmage in your tools directory of FS2 to make them into a .vp unless TM fixed that already.

I enjoyed the first three missions. The blasting of the station door was truly epic. I'm happy to have contributed to this campaign albeit little. It turned out really well.

Off to play some more.

They don't need to be VP's. The game will use the folders.
Mediavps' however, do.

Hehe....notify me when you find the easter eggs.

NOTE - they are usually find by scanning or blowing up things you're not told to scan or blow up.

Should I add a list with spoilers to how to find the eggz?

I gave up after Knox mission. Wingmen are WAY too stupid in this campaign.
Spoiler:
I tried TEN TIMES to capture Knox, but they've kept blowing it up.

My review:
+++ - SHIPS!!! (
Spoiler:
Gigantick, Banhammer and Rabbit too
)
++ WEAPUNZ!!!
+ BBQ!

-  typos!
-- killed missionz!
--- in two missions I failed cause I wasn't quick enough to destroy the frakked beamz! GEEEZ
----- First mission... (boring boring boring WAAAAH KABOOOM scan end)

Well, TrashMan... I expected to see the even-better-than-your-first-campaign... but well, let's face the truth: too much annoying bugs!

On the other hand - I can play with tonz of new shipzorz so I grade you:

8/10 !  (mod scale (-1 point for typos, -1 point for killed campaign:((((( )

Cheers!

(about blowing thing you're not told to blow up - I destroyed ONE FRIKKIN FREIGHTER TOO MUCH! bbzzzzt mission killd... well goodbye, I hope you will fix it :) )

well, i hacked the table to double the knoxes hitpoints.  :nervous: it works a lot better after that.

and also, once the generator is out, the AI should get an order to IGNORE THE FORT, AND STOP SHOOTING AT THE BLOODY THING! PROTECT THE SHEFFIELD, DAMMIT! theres 30 fighters coming in, and you're worried about a couple blob turrets that won't shoot?!?!?  :hopping:

Ok well talked to TrashMan on MSN hes been monkeyd *again* he says for no reson but I guess theres a good reason Anyway he asked me to post this:

The red-alert bug with the Gates of Adis mission has been fixed.
Fort Knowx changes AI to Unknown and gets protected once hte generator is down. I had no trouble capturing it.
I did reduce the HP of hte generator a bit, so one can do it fater

Funny, when other people get monkeyed they still get access to their project boards. Maybe Trashman should have access to this forum (or at least thread) to help anyone who's having troubles (or just has questions) with the campaign?

Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

Greetings everyone ,

I may have an answer for you Hanyuu271 . This freeze & crash happens to me too . I happen to see that when this did occur that the Central Unit was working which is strange because after loading each mission it should rest before actually entering the battlefield . So I come up with an idea . "Don't touch your controls until you are told to do so" ^^  . This could mean that the mission is not entirely loaded so just wait a bit , maybe 5 to 10 minutes on the Perseverance Battlefield Situation Briefing before hitting the continue button and starting the mission briefing .  It worked for me and hope the same for you . Good luck pilot  :) .
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

but I mean like when you press continue to start the mission breifing the breifing starts and instantly when the text is about to appear it freezes and crashes

Post by: Warboss on December 09, 2008, 10:39:23 pm
Konbanwa :) ,

sure it is exactly the same thing . On the screen just before the mission briefing you should wait a little before hitting continue . If it doesn't work , you could try the tradtitional stuff like driver update , defrag , clean install of Freespace 2 and try between build 3.6.9.exe and 3.6.10 .  If none of this helped you , alas  :( do your best and try another approach or wait for a patch .

yeuch. Use VPs next time, ok Trashy? I've not started yet but the ships look very nice. There's a few mirroring issues (shine maps not having alpha channels) and the tech entries (and probably the missions, too) could use some proofreading for spelling and grammar.

I'm really happy to see all your installations in here. I've always felt that's your best work.

And by the way, how's the high-poly Athena Mk 1 going? ;)

I'm getting some graphics issues that I either didn't see or overlooked in the beta thread.
I think this might be more of a general issue though.

Parts of ships are either "missing" or see through. I know i've got all the graphics features turned on, so that isn't the problem.

What version is this mod supposed to work with? because I can't get it to run at all on 3.6.9, and i've got the aforementioned issues on 3.6.10

Nighthavoc, as mentioned in previous posts you need to use one of the latest 3.6.10 builds.  If you are using the new 3.6.10 media VPs release it will not work with the old 3.6.9 build of FSOpen this could be your problem with the main campaign.  Your error messages indicate you are still using the 3.6.9 build.

Trashman... Why the little damage threshold for player's ship?
Why, if the fighters are from post-capella age, do they have smaller missile capacity?
FS2 also appears to crash a lot during your campaign. Why ?

It's not that I wouldn't appreciate your work, the cutscenes and custom music are one damn good eyecandy, but when you made two FoW campaigns which were good as they were, why didn't you keep the concept? They were hard, but doable, and average player as me has troubles passing the missions on normal. Is it just me?

I liked all the eyecandy all around, new ships, custom loading, wow, but getting hit by a harpoon and having 30 hull left seems pretty harsh for me. I know that's how an average foe of Alpha 1 feels like, but... Uh... We are the alpha 1's here, no? Oh wait...

You spent a lot of time on this FoW campaign for sure, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. That, however, does not mean it is bad. Other ppl like it, as it seems.

Less missiles. More per-missile punch. Think of it like part-way between FreeSpace 2 and Wing Commander Saga. Use your countermeasures, you have them for a good reason.

I hadn't actually reduced the HP of various craft. I noticed when plying the main FS campaign and various other ones, that the enemy is usually severely underpowered even on normal difficulty. Simply put, the DPS of their primary weapons was quite a bit lower than yours. And I also noticed that 90% of "dogfighting"  consisted of  spamming missiles.

So I doubled the size of missiles so one can carry only half as many, but did give the missiles a bit more bang for the buck - that way, the player will have to use the guns a bit more often.
Part of the difficulty is tied to the AI profile I'm using, since I wanted to make it a challenging campaign. But yea...I might have made it a bit too difficult on some places. Especially against the pirates. I may have to tone down their weapons a bit and make a few AI adjustments to bring the difficulty down a notch.

***

As for the people having chrashes - use one of the latest nighly builds.
If you get a crash during briefing for "The Trailblazers" mission (never did figure out what caused that one), simply try playing the game again. Always worked for me.

k19, as for your red alert mission problem - which mission is it? If it's the scouting mission in a pegasus, that problem should have been fixed when I last updated.
If you started playing the campaign before that updaate and didn't re-start it, the fix might not work.

ok. Try as I might, I can't fix the problems i'm having.

Several ships have "see-through" sections in the opening movie, and when I attempt to play the Extra "gate" campaign, My ship has no weapons whatsoever.

I am using version 3.6.10, since it crashes instantly in 3.6.9. Does this campaign require the 3.6.10 media VPs?
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on December 18, 2008, 05:04:36 am
I built it using the Zeta VP's, so I'd use 3.6.10. if I were you.

I haven't even tested the Extra gate campaign (it's only 3 missions, 1 of which is mostly talk, the otehr being only 1 minute long) :P
I did a lot of table changes, so it's possible I missed something in those missions.
I'll get to fixing that too :P

Did you download all 4 files in the specified folder? Do you use one of the latest nighly builds?

Yes, I downloaded them from the freespacemods.net website. I did what the notes said after extracting them. Now, I'm using the 3.6.10 offical MediaVPs and Freespace Open 3.6.9 offical. Please ask any questions you might have.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

it happened on that pegasus one too but it happen on a few others. I notice it might have something to do with jumping out before the game is able to send me to the next mission. Also I'm still at that pegasus red-alert mission so tell me where the update is. I'm considering restarting the campaign i did it once before when the red-alert with the vasduan in the escape pod did it and i couldn't fix. Please this is a great campaign i don't want to restart it again.

VP files have always been around and are used to keep data inside one convenient file.

The presence of VP files have nothing to do with whether or not it's an SCP campaign.

Crapola...
I was afraid this stupid Red-Alert bug would happen.

Hmm..I don't think it will be possible to fix this without requireing a campaign re-start.
Also, the campaign files (COTS.rar), ALLWAYS download them from this page, not from Freespacemods of somewhere else. This one I can be sure they are updated.

K..I could fix it by forcing a red-alert..or by using is-key-pressed SEXP to check...
Gah..Allright, I'll see what I can do about fixing this. I'll notifiy you once I update the files.

@est1895 -

So why is it that after doing everything you said needed to be done I get about 20 errors involving some LOD0 not being present, ships not having secondary hardpoints, and then the game ultimately crashes before it even goes past the splash screen?
No wait...it seemed the mod's nitpicky about running Debug builds.

No, the debug builds are nitpicky about errors. They're not meant for playing the game; they're meant for finding errors.

Ok, K19, I've been looking into this.. I'm replacing the has-departed with is-key-pressed (alt-J) on all REd-alert mission

Strange thing is - the early mission all have that trigger already, the escape pod on too.
Will post an update very soon.

EDIT:

Updated the FOW_COTS_C.rar file It should fix the red-alert problems.

Hello all,

In the mission "rabbit's hole" or w/e, the one where you escort the thing through the field. Bascially...the mission never ends. I scan the sat. and that objective is completed. The AWACs gets to a point where it has "no orders" but the protect mission objective never gets completed. It does get completed when i allow the AWACs to take some damage (radar gets destroyed). One time I scanned the sat and sentries, let the awacs radar get destroyed and i got  a a new objective to "destroy pirates" BUT lucky for me my computer freaked out (not because of fs2) and I haven't been able to get that objective again yet. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Well, first of all, the campaign was throughly entertaining and exciting.

But there was a weird bug which I noticed. If you were to restart a mission from the escape menu, you would be disembodied from your fighter and stuck at [0,0,0] and unable to move or fire. You can easialy get around this by exiting to the main hall and restarting from there. Any idea why this happens?

k19, as for your red alert mission problem - which mission is it? If it's the scouting mission in a pegasus, that problem should have been fixed when I last updated.
If you started playing the campaign before that updaate and didn't re-start it, the fix might not work.
it happened on that pegasus one too but it happen on a few others. Please this is a great campaign i don't want to restart it again.

i also have this problem except alpha wing has been blown to bits (apparently) when i change view im in two different locations i have all the files that you first posted so im not sure if it included the fix let me know when its updated i love this campaign!!

Gah. Sorry about it.. I uploaded it but Mediafire froze during verification. It sometimes does that, but the files allways went trough. This time it didn't. Re-uploading it now.

Very strange..when the AWACS stops a pirate wing should appear and you should get new orders. Could be the AWACS is not completing it's last waypoint, so the pirate fighters never trigger? I really can't tell yet. Worked flawlessly for me.

check your ships table - find the Orion mk2 entry and see if it's calling for OrionMk2.pof (as it should) or OrionMk2F.pof (the old ships table I had)

@Nighthavoc - that seems to be a graphics error in hte exe itself. Try using another build.

@Ryo - try it with the files I just uploaded. If it's still not working, then I really don't know what the problem is.

But now to reason for my very first post onboard of hard-light productions ;)

I really liked your campaign so far, trashman. But in the mission "the chase" i get an VERY annoying bug, which won't let me continue on playing your camapign.. i simply cannot land on the eternity, which is the very only way to complete this mission. Can you help me out please? I'd really like to continue playing you campaign.

And before i forget it: I use the newest mediavps (3.6.10) and i also tested the mission on the latest wanderer build and some of the latest nightly builds.

Hey there, reporting a bug that I am experiencing.

To put it simply, I've just completed the mission "I Spy" but everytime I click to continue the next mission - from both the "I Spy" debriefing and from the main menu - FS2 simply crashes on the loading screen. Nothing about any missing models or anything like that, simply a crash and the message box asking if I want to send an error report.

I am using the latest 3.6.10 mediavps, recently downloaded to get FSport up and running.

Otherwise, just to say that on the two missions I've played, good job, I'm liking all the new tech/ships etc, and I'm looking forward to more once I get this little crash problem sorted.

EDIT: Okay, I've just discovered something that might be of interest. I've run the debug version with FOW-COTS, and it'll get to the SCP loading screen (before the main menu), then it gives me the following message, and crashes:

Warning: $Rearm Rate for ballistic primary Maxim not specified.  Defaulting to 100...

File: weapons.cpp
Line: 2585

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
    fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081231_r5024.exe 0091f56c()
    fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081231_r5024.exe 009219df()

    fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081231_r5024.exe 0073eeb9()
    fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081231_r5024.exe 0073f22e()
    fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081231_r5024.exe 00c95126()
    fs2_open_3_6_10d-20081231_r5024.exe 00c94faf()
    kernel32.dll 7c816fd7()
------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm guessing this has something to do with the problem I'm getting when trying to load the mission after "I Spy".

The landing event is b0rked. It worked before, but I must have changed the player ship from Gamma2 to Gamma1 and forgot to change the event too. I'll fix that in a jiffy.

@BustRobot  - nah, that's not it. there are some things that are no longer needed and SCP will fill in the blanks in some cases. I'm looking into this, but so far I found nothing that might cause such a crash.
It would help to know which version of FSOpen you're using.

EDIT:
Fix for mission 19 attached. Niko_Thien, you might want to empty the chache and replay the previous mission - I think that should allow you to continue without re-starting the whole campaign.

Well, I'm using the latest version of the mediavps, 3.6.10, and the latest nightly build - build 5024 - I recently did a bumper update since I stopped playing FS2 for a while and started again a few days ago.

EDIT: TrashMan, I've just tried it with the 4989 nightly build, the the crash problem appears to be gone. Apparently I just needed a downgrade.

EDIT2: I'm not sure if this is a bug, but I'd just like to be sure. Basically, in the Red Alert mission after trailblazers, I'm changed from a Thunderbolt bomber (plus whatever ammo it's carrying) to a Perseus DH with 2 empty Rockeye missile slots and 2 Gurthang HL-R9 in the primary slots. Since it's a Red Alert mission I would've thought you'd stay with your Thunderbolt bomber or whatever craft+loadout you had in the mission "Trailblazers".
P.S. Happened in both original version and in Macfie's edited/fixed mission files (which I downloaded to fix a bug where entering the briefing for the "Trailblazers" mission caused FS2 to crash).

So should we be using the fixed mission files Macfie posted, or has the FOW COTS C file been updated with all the fixes?

Oh, and I just tried Rabbits Hole again with Macfie's fixes and the updated FOW COTS C file but I still get the same problem. This time however I managed to do something new. The Hubbles radar was destroyed so it left, but then a few minutes later the 8 ship pirate attack wave showed up. I destroyed it and the Hubble said something like "we're tracking them, follow us after them!" and the directive became follow hubble (even though it left about 5min ago) so I did. The game automatically made me restart the mission. Boo haha. Please help.

Make sure you do not have the auto match speed selected.  When the pirates arrive one of your wingmates will say "Pirates! Cut your main power now NOW! And don't move!"  Immediately cut your speed to zero and don't move.  After a while the pirates will leave,  the Hubble will say something like "we're tracking them, follow us after them!" and the directive became follow hubble.  The hubble will follow and then you can depart.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on January 09, 2009, 06:59:46 pm
If the Hubbles radar gets destroyed the mission fails.

The only part where it might get destroyed without the player being able to save it is when you have to stay still, and if a couple of asteroids decide to hit it right then. That would be just really bad luck.

you should be able to complete the mission even if you are detected by pirates - the difference is that you'll have to survive a pirate attack first.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: falcon2105 on January 10, 2009, 10:15:18 am
Wowww....that was it haha. Numerous thanks, I never realized that the "don't move directive" wasn't directed to the pirates. I thought it was to the pirates, and that they didnt listen at which point someone says "now they're onto us!" so i always just went out all 7k and destroyed em haha. And i don't know, for what ever reason whenever I was detected and the hubble was still around, after two waves of 4 pirates, nothing would happen for the rest of the mission and I would just sit there. Thanks again.

Edit: I just played a little more, and I'm getting the same problem as bustrobot. Except, for me it seems to be semi problematic because i jump in with only 1% health so invariably i die at some point or the other. It happened on the other red alert mission too but i managed to make it through that mission without touching anything, but here (after trailblazers) it seems harder, so help would b appreciated. Thanks
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

I see the problem. Red Alert is activated once the player jumps out and it sometimes doesn't trigger before mission end.
I replaced it with is-key-pressed.

K, I updated the COTS_C.rar file.

Finally finished the campaign. Aside from the random issues along the way it was great. All the new ship designs, especially the thunderbolt bomber, are incredible. I hate these types of endings though  :p. You HAVE to play more, but you can't so you feel like ripping out your hair . Oh well, the next chapter will be well worth the feeling im sure. My only comment would be that in a few missions the star map was noticeably boring. Maybe that was just your personal preference, or maybe my install is weird for some reason, I don't know. Also sometimes even if you failed a mission miserably it would let you pass, or sometimes the opposite would happen. And I tried the Gate missions, but it keeps saying "Player has no weapons" or something. I tried macfies fixed missions too but still get the same error. If you have a chance maybe you could fix that, although you admitted it was just a bunch of random stuff you never actually edited so w/e. Thanks for the campaign and everyone's help.

Wow..glad you liked the campaign that much. Personally I think it's rushed and put together rather clumsily, so I can only guess what your reaction would be if it was properly polished (altough half of the bugs and lack of polish are a product of really stupid and unpredictable problems that led me to dub this a "cursed campaign". Really, I can't remember the last time I had so much trouble putting together a campaign.)

The Gate is 3 mission in theory only. 2 of those missions are no-action-story-only so....kinda boring. They were supposed to be the end of the Pirate Wars. Alas, it never came to be. You're not missing much.

Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

You don't have to destroy the beams - that's an optional objective. You won't fail if you dont' destroy htem.

Read the mission briefing carefully - you have to let some of the convoy ships escape, and those have to be tagged.

His 2 transports with your TAGs and your wingman will ignore them, kill the rest.

Oh yeah..I must put together a easter egg list...

EDIT:

K, here's the list with the location and triggers of various easter eggz
Spoiler:

M01  - scan the liners comm system
M02 (I spy) - scan one of the freighters
M03b (the Rabbit. or something like that) - a cargo container will pop up near you during the mission (wiht a warning message) blow it up and then come close to the satellite
Do it fast - šreferably before the Inquisitor comes
M19 (the Chase) - There's a cargo container right behind you. Scan it (or blow it up. Can't remember which)
M20 - the gag is audio only and I think it's on by default. If not, you turn it on in the Jack in the Box mission or by typing my name

Oki so here is the problem.

I downloaded and extracted all related files of this campaign. Placed the FOW_COTS folder into my main FS dir. Then i go to the launcher and i attempt to run this campaign but then i get the blue screen of doom .

Ive tried several times even with the debug build of the FSO . and nothing i get the blue screen of doom each time i try to run the campaign and the comp resets . Then after windows reboots and i get inside to have a look at the laucher the laucher apparently has discarded the FSO 3.6.10 file ive been using to play the game and i have to load the file again the the browse thingy.

All other campaign seem to work just fine no problems there.

Oh yeah and the first time the very first time i tried to load the campaign i selected mod selected the FOW_Cots then hit run then after the game loaded the campaign isnt there i mean the game doesnt see the campaign. But it sees Blue planet ??? Wtf ????

You've broken something. Since you've tried to run a debug build, check the \freespace2\data\ folder. There should be a file called fs2_open.log. Post it here. If it is not there, try to run the debug again. If you fail, just take a screenshot of your \freespace2\ folder so that all files in it can be seen and post the screenshot here.

Sorry i'm at work now so i cant upload any pics yet.

However this is the only campaign that im having this trouble.

As i said all is well and good when i select the campaign folder ! I select the mod but the fiorst thing i noticed is that it does not load the pic for the FOW . I did not pay much attention to it. Then when i proceded to run the campaign for the very first time the game did not see the campaign but instead it offered me a choice of FS2 main campaign and Blue planet.

I exited the game selected the FOW_COTS camapign folder again (the image for the FOW the one with the Ravana i think ) did not load this time either.

So i hit apply button and the game crashed! actualy windows crashed giving me the blue screen of doom.

The computer reset .

I extered the FS folder again and reloaded the 3.6.10 build since the build was no longer there.

After this a proceded to load a random campaign from the FS2 folder. And it worked. No problems no nothing.

I attempted to run the FOW_COTS with the debug but no error log no nothing the computer crashed again.

So im guessing something is definetly wrong with my PC or my FS2 install.

This is a description of what i did in more detail .

Also i must point out this is the first time something like this has happened in about 1 year or so. The last time i had to reinstall FS2 ! Smashed my DVD Copy in the DVD-rom (no i no longer have the FS2 CD's in working order. Theire too badly scratched) And yeah this particular install is from Turrey Installer. If i have to reinstall again i guess il just have to buy the game again. I heard its dirt cheap.

However are there any deliveries made to east-europe ???

Hmm...could be something is not right with you folder setup of mod paths. You said the FOW image didn't appear. It HAS to appear is everything is set-up properly. Post a screenie of the folders when you can.

Ok i Finally got past the launcher.

The problem was that somehow the Launcher when running on OpenGL does not seem to detect my vidcard or something like that ! Sure i can choose rezolutions and stuff but it cant tell me what vid card i have.

So i selected the Direct3D8 option and the game loaded i was able to select FOW campaign in the campaign selection in game.

However now i have a bit of a problem it gives me this when i wanna play  :

Error: Can't open model file <MInstallation2.pof>
File: modelread.cpp
Line: 1995

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
    fs2_open_3_6_10r-20090120_r5052.exe 004e9758()
    fs2_open_3_6_10r-20090120_r5052.exe 0045d04d()
------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit2:
found the problem for why computer crashed before. It was because of the build i was using ! It is the only conclusion i can come up with.

After running this build here i went and loaded the previous build i was using and when i hit run the computer crashed. Doesn't do the same with the current build the latest build available however.

Oki so could anyone please underline or something everithing that is not supposed to be there . So i know what to remove and what not.
Your \FSInstaller\ folder is ok, since only extra .vp files can affect retail FS2 and mods. Perchance you should provide a screen of your FOW_COTS folder as well.

1. There might be issues with the drivers of your graphics card and/or chipset. Make sure both are up to date.
2. Which build were you using? 3.6.10 builds don't support Direct3D at all and select OpenGL forcefully, regardless of what you've selected from the Launcher.

However now i have a bit of a problem it gives me this when i wanna play  :

Error: Can't open model file <MInstallation2.pof>
Your FOW_COTS download might be corrupt. Or, if you're using the MediaVPs with it, the MediaVPs might be corrupt. A simple redownload will solve this.
Or, naturally, if there still is an interfering mod somewhere, it will cause errors like this.

found the problem for why computer crashed before. It was because of the build i was using ! It is the only conclusion i can come up with.

After running this build here i went and loaded the previous build i was using and when i hit run the computer crashed. Doesn't do the same with the current build the latest build available however.
It is occasionally difficult to keep a track of your statements. So, in short: which build worked? The latest nightly? An older one?

Scratch that Lobo in the end something might be wrong with my PC since it crashed in NFS Undercover as well . Cant figure out what is it since the game loaded i played for a bout 5 mins then hit ant tab then when i alt tab'ed again to enter the game the computer crashed again ..!

So i would like to appologize for my previous blame on the nigh builds.

However i can not figure out what is wrong with it since i played other campaigns of FS wihtout any problems. So it must have to do with high res demands of Undercover and FOW-COTS. And my comp for some reason can no longer handle such high demands.

Which is strange since i've played Crysis on it without any problems and other games that require a lot of res.

Again sorry T-Man and the people who make the builds.

After i get everithing sorted out il redownload the mediavp's and FOWCOTS and try again .

Hmm....MInstallation2.pof should be in there.

First you should check if your FOW_COTS folder is setup properly. It should have the mod.ini, the banner image, the settings.ini and the DATA folder with all the other subfolders in it (and check the mod.ini to see if the paths are correct)

Assuming everything is correct, check to see if MInstallation2.pof is inside the models folder

I have to say, this mod is incredible. To me, it seems like everything that Freespace would have been had it been made recently. All the new ships are, of course, breatakingly impressive, and the mod introduces so many new classes. More importantly, though, I've really enjoyed the added sense of realism that this campaign seems to carry. Also, the new carrier class = genius. I've always wondered exactly how fighters got where they needed to be.

Unfortunately, I can't play through very much of it, since I keep having graphical errors on the first mission. Black triangular graphical artifacts keep appearing all over my screen, with each tip centered on another ship, making the game very difficult to play. I took a screenshot to illustrate the problem:

Have I installed the mod incorrectly?

Cheers, and thanks for such a great campaign!

Most likely your MediaVPs are corrupt. This often happens if the MediaVPs are downloaded with Turey's Installer. Download them manually from the release threads using the Sectorgame links.

LOL..no wonder it's not working... I thought I put the instruction in a readme or on the first post of this topic?

Ok, here's the deal.

Make a folder called FOW_COTS inside your Freespace2 directory.
Copy the contents of the 4 folders you extracted into this one (the stuff from COTS_1, COTS2, COTS_C and EXTRA folers, NOT the folders themselves).

Once done, the FOW_COTS folder should have a Data folder (with other sub-folders inside), a mod.ini file and a .bmp image.

Select it in the FS2 launcher and play :)

You also have some VP files in your freespace folder that should not be there.  There are two VP files for Cardinal spear and Cardinal Spear Vega that should be in your Cardinalspear folder.  There is also a VP file named ATCP.VP  if that is a mod it needs to be in its own folder.  You need the latest nightly build of FSOpen 3.6.10
Which you can get here:

Im stuck on the mission i think its called the crippeling blow. ! I mean how the hell do you beat that mission. The destroyer remains alive at 1% hull but alive the cruiser however does not. nevertheless after all the bad guis are dead what are you suposed to do ? nothing happens i just stay there !

Edit:

Im getting missing textures in almost ALL new or modified ships ! Solution pls !
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on February 25, 2009, 08:30:29 pm
I found out that in the previous mission to "Crippling Blow", you must not jump out and you need to let the final escape pod jump out and then it will say "downloading new orders". If you jump out without waiting, the pods will not appear in "Crippling Blow" and the friendly destroyer Perseverance will just sit there forever allowing the HOL destroyer to destroy it. The solution, like I said: do not jump out in the previous mission. Let it automatically take you to the next mission. When the escape pods enter the fighter bay, it will trigger the Perseverance to start moving.

I understand your feeling. I was upset when the mission failed and didn't know why at first. Trashman should have set it up to make it so you can't jump out in the previous mission, put more recommendations in missions when you fail them, and make the directives clearer and add more directives and recommendations when they don't exist.

I'm pretty sure I did add a no-jump SEXP at the very beginning.
none of my (few) testers reported this....it's always the little things that go unnoticed by 99% of people, and little things that can have BIG consequences....*grumble*

Quote
Trashman needs to do more playtesting before releasing campaigns, apparently. It is loaded with so many grammar and spelling errors (like he never even playtested it) and I will go back later and fix them all, like I did in Chapter 1. For some reason, he never told me if he got that email I sent him with all the missions attached.

I got them, no worries.
I'm just spending the whole day playing Drakensang and not modeling or checking my mail...

Quote
And about the problems with the mission files: I just took all sub-folders from the three default COTS folders and put them under FOW COTF/data after running into a similar problem, because without vps, it seems that as long as it is under "data", it will read all files. Copy all the sub folders (mission, effect, music, etc) and put them under FOW COTS/data folder. First you must make the data folder under that folder and then copy all those folders inito the data forlder and delete the 3 default folders. It seems that Trashman also didn't know how to make it install correctly on people's computers and set it up wrong by having those 3 sub-folders instead of one folder and a data folder.

I wrote precise insctrucions inhhte readme (and the first post IIRC). FS2 directory structure should be moirrored inside the COTS folder..

Well managed to get out of that one by just advance to the next mission option you get once you fail a mission 5 times !

But now im stuck on a mission where you have to scand the 3 subsistems on the destroyer i can scan 2 of them but the 3'rd is imposible. The whole middle section of the ship is missing or rather its textures. I can target the subsistem and i get withing the required distance from it but no luck on scanning.

And if i jump out at the node i get the same mission to play all over again . No debriefing no nothing.

any solution ??

This.

I just downloaded the campaign today, so I presume the files are about as up to date as they're going to get.  My nightly build isn't the latest, but it's newer than the campaign.

Also, Trashman's spelling is terrible.   :p  And why do the fighters' secondary bank capacities all suck?  I want my Herc II back; it can carry a decent number of missiles.

Its useless i cant get past Into the Malestrom. I have the latest media vp's  i have the laatest build i have all the folders and files set up as someone pointed out above. In fact i already had them that way on a hunch !

Im still getting missing textures on the HOL destroyers and i still can not scan the weapons subsistem.

If i go to the node and jump out i just get back to the briefing and such of the mission. I dont get any debriefing no nothing.

So something must be very wrong. If anyone can figure out how to fix the missing textures thing and stuff please let me know.

Hm...I cna try removing the briefing display for that mission entirely, leaving only text. Maybe that would help you.

Also, I think I know what may be causing the missing texture on the HoL destroyer. Media VP's has been changing some texture names, switching for TextureName a,b,c to just TextureName and using mipmaps. Given that the weapons subsystem is located on hte belly, where capital-03a texture is used, that might be causing hte problem. In that case, fixing it should be as easy as opening the ship in PCS2 and re-naming hte texture by removing the "a".
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on March 06, 2009, 06:25:16 am
Allright, I've been doing a little checking and the reason the hybrid is missing some textures are the newest Media VP's. Capital03-2 03-04 and 03-05 don't show up.

Fixing it is as simple as extracting the 3 maps (with their normal and shine variants) from the mediavps .VP into the FOW_COTS/Data/maps folder.

I'll provide a fix very soon, for that and every other problem reported here.
For the Trailblaizers mission I'll add a extra copy of the mission that has no briefing - that should allow anyone having problems with it to play normally by just replacing the mission.

For the Crippling Blow mission I'll add a break-warp sexp to make sure the player can't jump out. Crude, but simple.

I'll also upload high Max's fixes to FOW1 missions.

EDIT: Maxes mission fixes for FOW: chapter 1 uploaded on freeespacemods.

Below is the noBrief trailblazers mission for those who have trouble with the mission. Just replace this with he old mission (don't forget to re-name)

To clarify again, Chapzter 1, 2, 3 and redundant and old names.

FOW: Sons of Thunder  - initially envisioned as Chapter 1, this is the first campaign I made

FOW: Pirate wars - this is supposed to be Chatper 2. Was never made. The 3 Gate missions were supposed to be the end of this chapter

FOW: Coming of the Storm - first part of what was initially supposed to be Chapter 3, but was split in two. Completed recently.
FOW: Dawn of the Apocalypse  - second part of what used to be Chapter 3. Planned, 2 missions were done for it some time ago. On hold. And yes, shivans get new ships.

IIRC, I reduced their afterburner capacity some time ago. They should be nimble and a real pest (as pirates really are) but not THAT bad. Strange...could you check the table values for their fighters afterburner and post them here? I want to compare them with the ones I got.

Hello. I am still not able to play this mod and still get the same error it first had in the beginning.

I opened all 3 files and went into each data folder, and maually pasted all the subfolders into FOW_COTS/data folder under Freespace 2. But, FOW_COTS1 has model folder that is extra and FOW_COTS2 has interface folder that is extra. So those 2 subfolders were not copied and pasted.  In the C:\Games\Freespace2\FOW_COTS\Data looks just like the one on your page but, there is no cache folder. I cannot find a cache folder at all, to copy and paste. Am I suppost to overwrite the 2 extra folders? And do you know where the cache folder is? :shaking:

Short review:
Loved it! Especially the new ships. Orion mkII = <3

And the GTB claymore, was like flying a small freighter or gunboat lol. Awesome. The Falcon is also a great ship, though I found myself in the Perseus DH whenever I had the chance. The Ares mkIII and the Ezechiel (sp?) felt a little weak. A lot of gunpoints, but not enough juice to power them. Not enough speed, manouverability or armor to make up for that either I felt. They look beautiful, though. :)

The weapons were cool and a breath of fresh air as well, esp the Avenger mkII. Even I can hit stuff with that thing, hehe. Spray & pray in Freespace. ;) Liked the dumbfire bombs and the power of the new fire and forget missiles also. Death laser was super easy for accuracy, but drained a lot of power. I noticed the AI didn't quite understand its range either, as they kept firing it from 6km away and draining their power with no chance of hitting their target. Minor stuff though really, a lot of choices in primary and secondary weapons! Due to loadout I was using the Thunderstorm most of the time, and found it a decently balanced power/damage weapon, also the "projectiles" were fast moving and thus made it easy to hit the target.

Long and pretty cool campaign, with a nice cliffhanger at the end! Most missions were great in balance, although I felt the last mission was a little too short and easy (destroying the Prophecy), sort of an anti-climax to such a great buildup with the storyline. To be fair though, I was playing on easy. I usually play on Medium, but after being blown to smithereens during the first few missions so many times I gave up and thought **** it, I'm gonna enjoy the new ships and weapons and blow stuff up, so I put it on Easy. I had to replay several missions on Easy anyway, hehe (yes I suck, what can you do) :)

I'm liking that first fighter (phoenix mk II?)

I have one problem with the campaign.  On mission three, after I kill 2 waves of pirates or so, nothing happens.  Eventually the AWACS warps out, but I have no order to depart.  If I warp out, I get no debriefing, and I have failed the mission.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: Jake2447 on April 20, 2009, 09:58:25 pm
You are supposed to cut your engines when the pirates arrive and wait for them to jump out before moving again, not kill them. Do you read the ingame dialog? Then jump out and follow the AWACS after it jumps. I fixed the grammar and spelling in all missions and improved upon the grammar in them and might have changed some sentences into complete sentences, and Trashman uploaded the modified version to freespacemods.net.

Thanks.  When my wingman said to cut power, I thought he was ordering the pirates to surrender.

Gates is a bonus, 3 mission intro campaign.

If you're not seeing Flames of War in the campaign list, then something is definately very wrong.

Hi!

In the beginning I'd like to say that this campaign truly rocks. New ships, weapons 'n' stuff are all cool... But I'd love to see them not only in the database...
To cut to the chase, I have serious problems with the second mission (where you capture the goddamned asteroid). They just kill it. Even if I give the "Ignore my target" order...

I tried making it invincible, so it eventually "sorts out" the fighters and pounded every single turret, installation and subsystem inside, still to no avail... It just won't turn to neutral... Am I doing something wrong? I've went through all 10 pages of this thread and saw that people had some problems, but after they disabled the generator all was fine. Well, not with me, apparently.

Any solution TrashMan? Please, I'd love to play through it all, but I just can't...

Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: pietraz on May 03, 2009, 10:05:31 am
I somehow managed to push the plot forward. I've multiplied Knox's HP by 10 and fortunately I had enough time to listen to everything and stuff and then disable the damned installation so it went neutral... The idiots kept firing on it, however o.O

Thanks for the concern, nevertheless ;)

The sooner you take out the generater and it turns to friendly status, the less they should attack it. I forgot but I think it turns to friendly status. If it didn't, than I should have fixed that when I did the mission playthroughs. I can check the file to see if it does.
They don't shoot LESS... They just keep hosing down lasers at it, point blank, even the battlecruiser... Fortunately enough, it doesn't use its beams...

As soon as it's disabeled it should switch to neutral and friendly ships should stop shooting. Look like some event failed to trigger.

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2c937bcb38ef65c1ab1eab3e9fa335ca25c30194ef361344

(Link on first post too)

Includes a bunch of missions, ships and weapons tables and 2 nameplates.

I think I adressed every issue brought up in this thread (there's a no briefing variant of the mission 05a too). Balance is improved in some mission, there are more rewards to earn nd stuff. Enjoy.

I do or I am not really sure. Every time I start up the mod it says that 48 corrupted files have been found and scp will compensate for it etc etc
Do I have to put together the data files in COS 1 and 2 folder? or I could just leave it like that? cause thats the way i installed it but at least it was in order based on your readme. Tell me what I did wrong.

I believe Siddyus is using 3.6.10 RC3, which now spouts a warning about all the errors it detects in the modfiles. It probably means there are a lot of null MOI errors and stuff.

Trashman, you should run your mod under debug and try to clear up all the errors it spouts.

Query:  Why does the Falcon fighter take hull damage when hit even when the shields are up?  And not just by beams?  That plus the total lack of weapons suitable for disarming a cruiser makes the second mission bloody impossible.

Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on June 25, 2009, 05:02:13 am
Hmm....don't ALL ships now sometimes take a bit of damage from powerful weapons even with shields up?
I think that's the result of upping the weapons damage...Or it might be some weird side-effect of something.

As far as disarming the cruiser - you'll find Rockeyes can take out the anti-fighter beams with ease...and from great range to boot. With the latest fix file, you can call in a reinforcement wing too.

Regarding the secondary bank capacity - that was deliberate given the different balancing. The HOL don't use as massive numbers as shivans usually do, but their pilots have higher AI settings. Having the player rely more on primaries and actually dogfighting a bit more drives the point home better methinks.

If you think you're having a hard time now...wait for DOTA...shivan fighters/bombers and weapons got a considerable beefing up. :drevil:
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

They might, but the Falcon is sufficiently fragile that it takes significant damage even with the shields still up; it's almost like playing the early stages of TIE Fighter again.

Androgeos, that's a new feature in 3.6.10 RC3. It's caused by subtle problems in the modpack such as null MOI errors and stuff like that.

You should be able to ignore it and continue, but it means Trashman should run a debug build and correct all the problems that pop up.

A mission whose name I forget, which is the third part in a three part mission involving covering the GTD Perseverance and the Andropov's escape pods, seems to be impossible to complete.  I (finally) successfully defended the Perseverance, and the debriefing says nothing about failure, but the game says I failed the mission.  This may have something to do with the Perseverance not warping out after the second destroyer is destroyed.  (I know the in-mission dialogue says not to engage it, but destroying its forward cannon is the only way to protect the Perseverance, and the Perseverance itself destroys the HoL destroyer if you disarm it.)
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on June 26, 2009, 06:32:46 am
Did you warp out in the mission before?
Cause that can break this mission (since it's a red-alert one and the escape pods carry over from the previous mission) - it ends with a "downloading new orders" and red-alert event. If so, you have to replay the previous mission (just kill yourself and you'll get an option to replay the previous one)

The Perserverance won't start moving before the escape pods are picked up. The pods will never appear if the red-alert is not triggered properly. I disabled the players jump drive in the fix files so that wouldn't happen. Did you play the previous mission without the fixed files?

The only other thing I can think of is that the departure event doesn't trigger, but it should, as soon as a short waypoint is complete.
In numerous tests I never had the Perserverance disabled either (has 4 engines and lots of HP, so it's very hard to disable her), and that's hte only other thing I cna think of that would cause it not to jump.

hmmm... I truly enjoyed Chapter 1, and the first mission of this COTS I was able to play before I was booted out of FS2 due to some missing ship... unfortunately none of my debug builds actually start up the mod beyond the pilot selection, so this is all I can add from the very first debug messages (3.6.10 rc2 + 3):

That last WEAPON_LIST_TYPE string message was followed by many more weapons from your mod, I only posted the first call here.

something else, from your cotsfix file, there are two stray dds, the raven and the crusader, I presume those go into the maps folder with the others? if you simply extract it without knowing about FS2 mod files, those will end up alone in the DATA folder  :-)  just mentioning that as there are certainly many who are not as savvy when it comes to what-goes-where

Uh . . .

Few things.

1. First when I start this baby up it says "warning, FSSCP has detected 30 errors" (does anyone else get this too?)

2. I played the second mission. My fighter the Falcon has a default shield display icon. However, it doesn't seem to work. Because the shield never dissipates when hit even though my fighter is getting pumelled (ie why am I dying when I have full shields???).

I installed the 108 mb file off of FSMods and I installed the Highmax Fix arj or zip as well.

The 30 warnings. Warnings are not serious. Those are things like missing rearm rate (which the game will replace with a default value) The campaign should work without problems.

The Falcon .pof  was missing the shield mesh. You can get fixed model for it from Freespacemods.
Also, get the latest campaign fix files from freespacemods with the latest tables.

Wasn't there supposed to be new interface art for the loading screen? I got the art in the data/interface folder, but I still get the default screen.
By the way, after redownloading the campaign, a new ship called the GTTB Armageddon appeared in the tech room, but selecting it crashes the game and I'm informed that the model is missing.

Yes, there should be new loading screens. They are all referenced in the mission files themsevles.

The GTTB Armageddon is an oversight on my part. It shouldn't be in the tables in the first place.

Erm

Regarding mission 3 or 4, whichever
Spoiler:
The one where you guard the AWACs. Is it possible to actually NOT get noticed by the pirates? I've only played the mission three times, the first time I misunderstood the text so I didn't stop. Then the radar got destroyed. Second time I did stop then an asteroid bumped into me so we got noticed again. Third time I stopped right beside the AWACs to prevent asteroids banging into me and after like a minute the dumb AWACs decided to fire only sporadically so three-four asteroids hit it and bumped me again. What the hell?

I'm just wondering if I should even try. Or maybe the awacs just got dumb and next time hopefully it won't.

You just had bad luck.

With new builds it is now possible to create a "clear zone" inside the asteroid field. Mayhaps I should tweak it.

Well after 10-12 tries I got past the asteroid mission.

Now a new problem:

Spoiler:
In the mission "A New Line to Hold". It gives me RTB objectives but when I return to base it doesn't let me advance. Though I didn't look at the objectives screen so maybe it wasn't fulfilled yet??? I know in the most recent attempt I still had mjolnirs online so it shouldn't have been a failure or whatnot.

Hmmmn. Maybe not the fighters. I'll give it another go

Ok. I have to say that I REALLY do not like the mission design of that battle.

Spoiler:
Basically. I spend 5-10 minutes protecting the mjolnirs. And no matter how well I do, my failure or success depends entirely upon a ship to ship beam battle that I have no control over whatsoever. I just played the mission three times. With all ships and all mjolnirs surviving until the Defilers come in and then when they come in, I lose. Because they hit the cannons, and the cannons miss them. Or too many allied beams concentrate on too few enemy targets or whatever. But basically it's completely out of my control. I even tried taking trebuchets to disable the defiler's beam cannons but that doesn't really do anything either.

I think I'll try the mission five times in a row and then if I fail hopefully the "skip this mission" question comes up.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

I recall reducing the victory conditions. Only 1 mjolnir needs to survive.
You do got the fix, right?

Hm...wait a sec...WTF?
A slight botch in the victory conditions. The trigger is delayed by 100 second by mistake.

What I got is:

WHEN
+AND
  +is-destroyed-delay
    -- 0
-- list of enemy ships and wings
  +NOT
     +is-destroyed-delay
        --100
        -- list of mjolnirs

So either edit the mission yourself to replace the 100 with 0, or simply bump up the time compression to x64 once the mission is over and wait a bit before jumping out

Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

Ok, no the problem was that I was getting a return to base directive before I was supposed to return to base.

Spoiler:
it gives me a RTB when the defilers are destroyed but at that time there are still usually some Seth fighters left and the mission is incomplete without that. So the other times I think I just returned to base because it told me to. Oh well. I got past it finally anyway

thanks

I'm following this forum irregularly for some long time now.
Yesterday I tried to download this campaign but i was being disconnected from the internet before every file was finished and I was unable to resume the download. Now the only file missing is "FOW_COTS1.rar" but the site you uploaded it doesn't let me get that file. I don't know why that is the case because downloading the other files is no problem at all.
Please forgive me my bad english, it's not my native language.

You can also download the campaign from freespacemods.net:
http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.447 (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.447)

Though the campaign is hosted as one big zip file there, not 3 separate rar files. So depending on your internet connection that may not be a good thing for you. If your internet connection is fast it's only 100mb to download

Thank you, I thought that might be an outdated version, so I didn't thought about downloading it.
100mb isn't that bad, might take a while but at least i'll have a new campaign to play :)

Well it's the version I'm playing so hopefully it's the right one. Just apply the FIX to it afterwards which is either on FSMods or you can get it from mediafire where he's hosting it and the other files.

Okay I finally finished it, comments:

Spoiler:
It was a pretty fun campaign with lots of new ships and so forth. Some of the new ships were hit and miss. Well most of Trashman's ships were fun to fly but like the Perseus DH or whatever, what's the point? I'll just fly the Falcon instead. The HoL ships are of course cool though the HLCv seems to be missing its subsystems?? Or at least I tried to target it's engines once and could target nothing but turrets. Still cool to see some ships from OTT being used and they work pretty well though the Carrier's not my favourite design. Oh hey I'll do the NGMT style:

The Good:
-Varied missions and lots of them.
-Cool new ships
-pretty free of spelling errors and so forth at this point

The Bad:
-Some of the missions could've been a bit more varied. Most of the missions the player was essentially in an interceptor squadron. There weren't too many bomber or heavy assault missions. And did the Ares get changed? I thought it had a higher missile load.
-Some missions were big beam fests that the player had little to no control over. Like the Mjolnir defence mission. Or some of the capital ship battles. It can look pretty cool but at the same time there's so much beam fire flying around I don't know what's going on and then the mission is done 30 seconds in and I'm jumping out somewhere else.
-Some missions were a bit hard in their difficulty and required me to pull rabbits out of a hat. Which isn't so much bad, but it's just odd for command to complain about my performance when any normal human couldn't be held accountable. Like the escort mission where  you're bringing a convoy through an asteroid field and then some Carrier jumps in. So then singlehandidly I have to shoot down most of the bombers, and disarm pretty much every facing weapon on the carrier before it blows the convoy to pieces (as its beams and plasma cannons will make short work of anything). I just think it would be better if Command assumed I was one of the normal peeps.
-Some of the ships could've used waypoints. Like the final mission for example didn't even have waypoint paths for the ships (or maybe they end at some point) so the two ships close and then make these jarring movements that go with any "attack ship" order given to capital ships.
-I miss slash beams. Where'd they all go?
-Essentially I think what I'm saying is that a lot of the missions were cool, but they could've used a little a more scripting. Like instead of having five ships all open up with beams at once, you can stagger their beam free sexps so that it's just more visually interesting (to me anyway). Think to Bear Baiting right, if the mission opened with the Phoenix or whatever it's called opening up and the Sathanas opening up at the same time 5 seconds in, it would've been a bit lame. But instead you get some frantic comchatter, the anticipation, and then the Sathanas opens up and the ship gets wasted (or magically saved the case may be).

The Bugs:
-I got a bonus objective in the aforementioned escort mission for pulling all the ships through okay even though I lost one.
-During the Sizifus deployment mission, I got some magic egg for no reason. I just deploy, said I get an egg, and then there's something about the inquisition and wierd noises going on and I don't know what the deal is. Also in that mission I get a bad debrief for letting the AWACs leave the area even though I destroyed the radar array so they had no reason to complain.

Anyway it was some good fun.  :D

To answer some of your questions:

Spoiler:
- yes, the Ares had it's capacity changed. All ships did. I wanted more dogfighting and less missile chugging. Missiles were made more powerful to conpensate. 1 harpoon does almost the same damage as 2 stock ones.

- some missions are rather hectic and a lot of things happen fast. If you're ever confused, pause the game and look up the mission communications.

- the escort mission with the carrier shouldn't be a problem. The carrier arrives can only fire 1 beam. It wont' fire after that since a vasudan destroyer will chase it off. Unless something didn't trigger properly, you don't have to bother with the carrier at all. If a freighter is damaged there's a good chance that one beam will destroy it, but that's war for you. Getting all 4 trough never was required.

- eh? I'm pretty sure the last mission does have both ships following waypoints.

- the Sizifus mission easter egg? It's a hommange to Monty Python (the GTC Inquisitor sends the "No one excpets the spanish inquisition" message as it depolys) and Saint Seiya (a cruiser names Aeolia fireing a zillion yellow plasma beams with the sound of the lion roaring in the background...google Leo Aeolia if you don't get that one)

Hmmn, the carrier fired both a beam off its nose and off its mid section beneath the neck. It also lobs those plasma cannon rounds at the freighters which seem to kill them pretty good as well. Played that mission a great many times

- eh? I'm pretty sure the last mission does have both ships following waypoints.

Oh that may be true. I just know as the ships get closer, the Eternity for example does some pretty abrupt course changes.

Well it's not clear to me why I got the easter egg is all. Most of your eggs are hidden from what I can tell, relatively. But in that mission all I did was start the mission and I got an easter egg so not sure what I did to deserve it. (waiting for the cutscene to run its course???)

Anyway just some comments not so much complaints or anything. Always good I find to receive feedback other than bugs complaints

I ran into a problem with a mission lately
Spoiler:
I don't know the mission's name, so I'll describe it:
You are flying a Pegasus stealth fighter an scanned some HoL ships. Then you head back through subspace, no problem until this point.
When I drop out of subspace nothing works, it's like a cutscene. I got no ship but the HUD is displayed. 2 HoL destroyers jump in and destroy the GTVA capital ships, move a bit and then stop. The mission doesn't end, so I think it's not meant to be a cutscene.

What could I do about it?

Ugh...some strange bug you got there.. Do you have the fix from freespacemods?

You'll have to re-start the mission chain  (scanning HOL ships) so that the red alert can trigger properly. You have hte "replay previous mission" option.

Thanks for the help.

BTW: I just realised that the HoL destroyers remind me a bit of the terran ships in the game "Sword of the Stars" because of their engine section :D

Great mod, loved it, spelling errors weren't bad enough to overwhelm me.

One little thing though.  You have the Argos system.  Argos has no naval yards.  The Argos system must contain the Argos naval yards.  Maybe Argos could get some naval yards in your next campaign.  (Yes, I know this campaign was released before ANY was released, but you really have no excuse for not including any naval yards in Argos in your next campaign, especially with a mission titled "Sword of the Stars".)

My fix can be found here: http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.514 and all spelling and grammar is fixed, including some bugs, as long as TrashMan uploaded all my missions into the pack. There should be no spelling or grammar errors in my patch. I went over it and did another campaign playthrough after fixing up and testing each mission through my first playthrough. As I was playing through the campaign a second time, I fixed even more stuff. If I wasn't sure of the spelling of a word, I put it in MS Word to spell check it.

I was pretty sure I installed this fix from freespacemods.net, but it seems that it wasn't the case.
I don't know if there are any spelling or grammer errors anywhere, I had no time concerning about that because of the Vasudans on my tail ;)
Nice campaign anyways, I had a lot of fun playing it. I just hope there is something to follow sometime.

So how do you get your wingmates to not destroy Fort Knox after the generator is destroyed???  The IFF status never changes to unknown, it stays hostile and they destroy it.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

Order them to ignore it? (C-3-6 IIRC)
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: Nehemiah on September 03, 2009, 09:06:58 pm
The wingmen disregard my order to ignor Fort Knox, and the cruiser keeps shooting it anyway, so that's not the answer.  In addition, I redownloaded COTS to see if it was a problem with the version I had (I got mine from freespacemods.net), and now I am told I am missing models in the second mission when you have to destroy part of the pirate convoy and destroy the other.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm

Odd. When I took out the generator it's status changed from hostile to neutral. This doesn't happen for you??
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: Nehemiah on September 04, 2009, 10:09:21 am
No, it doesn't.  I'm starting to wonder if I have a bad version or something.  Maybe its a problem with how I extracted the zipped folders that I downloaded to my main COTS folder.  I'm not going to lie, I am a little confused with the way this campaign download is set up.  There are a couple extra files that come in the COTS_fix file that are not contained in either folder in that package, and I am wondering if incorrect placement of those two files is why the game tells me in mission 2 that I am missing ship models.  I don't know anymore.  I have had more trouble with this campaign than any other I've downloaded before.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: Nehemiah on September 04, 2009, 01:56:14 pm
i think I figured out the problem.  In the COTS_fix file, the folder is called "mission", while in the main COTS data folder, it was called "missions", therefore, the changes were not being overriden by the fix.  I changed the name of the folder in the fix files to "missions", so we'll now see if this works.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: Nehemiah on September 04, 2009, 02:28:17 pm
Okay, so the game is working better than it did before, but Fort Knox is still not turning to unknown status after its generator is destroyed and is still hostile, resulting in my wingmates and allied cruiser destroying it.

Hi!
So. Uhm...Im kind of newb in this, but so far all the mods Ive installed so far, simply required me to exctract them into a certain folder called modxyz, which will then have subfolders like Freespace2/modxyz/data/missions/ etc

However this Mod kind of confuses me, as Trashman himself and also the readme itself tell me to extract all of the .rar's into freespace2\modxyz, where all the files and folders like data\ remain in subfolders like FOW_COTS2\ and the likes.

However if I keep it like that, then the mod wont even initiate. If I extract all files to where they are in all the other mods, modxyz\data\etc then it gets initiated, I can launch the game, but I get 36 errors at startup, and so on. Also mission 2 had an error, which I was able to fix thanks to nehemias posts. However uhh...I Donno still feels kind of weird. After all if I do whats in the readme and what trashman said, it wont work, and if I do what I do with other mods, it works,"<<

PS I didnt download the music files, may that be the reason for the 36 errors?

PS2, yesh Im new here, kind of.
Title: Re: RELEASE: Flames of War - Coming of the Storm
Post by: TrashMan on September 05, 2009, 10:17:40 am
Errors? You mean warnings.

Warning are mostly leftovers from ships and weapon tables that have some unused lines and they aren't serious. Or the new exe version have some things change and give your warnings.

Okay, it should be immediately obvious that I'm new here. Sorry if I sound really stupid.

Now, I've got this (admittedly) weird problem.

I've gotten the FoW_COTS (all 100+mb of it) from freespacemods, and I got the fix from same location. Extracted them all to same location, selected mod in FSO launcher, started the game, no errors. So far, so good.

Then I go to the campaign menu and I only see... the main Freespace 2 campaign. No FoW.

Naturally, I assumed I was just being stupid, so I went and did what any other person would do: read the README.txt.

README.txt told me I needed FoW_COTS1, 2 and C, so I went to the main page, and tried to download all three. And the fix, of course. Went to the mediafire page, downloaded everything except... COTS_C. Mediafire reported a broken link.

I'm stuck.

Help...? Please?

Ahh, see, there's the problem.

All the *.fc2 files already are in the missions folder, and when I go to the Campaigns room, I still get... only the main Freespace 2 campaign.

EDIT: Just to clarify something...

I only see two .fc2 files, fow_cots.fc2 and Fow_gate.fc2

Is this correct?

Um, okay, I think we're a little muddled here.

Well, I'm muddled, at least.

See, I'm not running the install files off http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2c937bcb38ef65c1ab1eab3e9fa335ca25c30194ef361344 (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2c937bcb38ef65c1ab1eab3e9fa335ca25c30194ef361344)

I'm running off the great big pack found on freespacemods.net

Reason being, of course, that the FOW_COTS-C link in http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2c937bcb38ef65c1ab1eab3e9fa335ca25c30194ef361344 (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=2c937bcb38ef65c1ab1eab3e9fa335ca25c30194ef361344) doesn't work for me. Everything else on the mediafire page downloads fine, except the COTS-C, and I think that's the most important file of them all...

Which is why I have strange problems. Probably.

And I've tried copying everything in \Data from the COTS1 and 2 files into the \data folder, still nothing. Sorry.

I guess make all the required folders under the data folder (create it if it doesn't exist) under the campaign folder and then put all the missions in the missions folder, maps in maps, etc, manually. It worked for me. You will have to take all the missions from all 3 folders from the pack and put them in the one under data. Do the same for all corresponding files into their correct folders.

Yeah, figured this out about 20 seconds after posting my first response.....Thanks!!

Hmmm...I'm, getting "Missing Ship Class" in mission 2, even with everything on the first page.
Am I still missing something?

Go to the Wiki and search GTTB Armageddon. Download from the link. You need to install the PCX files to the maps directory in the mod folder, and the POF file to the models directory in the mod folder. This fixed it for me. Found out after trying to read description in the Tech Room. If this don't work.....I don't know what's wrong.....

Issue with Mission 4, The Rabbit Hole. Even if I destroy all the fighers and asteroids, the radar dome on the Hubble blows up and I fail the mission. Any thoughts? I've tried making the thing invincible, but it crashes my game.

You are supposed to cut your engines and let the pirates jump out so they don't see you (play possum like in Derelict), then resume your escort.

I do, buy my wingmen go after asteroids after about 10 seconds, and then I'm screwed. Should I try without them?

Didn't I fixed that. Download the mission fix, it should be resolved. Either way, it's not a problem - only a leftover tbl entry from a ship that was removed. Since it doesn't appear in any mission, it won't cause any problems.

EDIT: You musn't move. The second your flight leader tells you to cut your engines, cut them. Note that if you were traveling too fast before that, you may not slow down in time.
This is due to the way the SEXP works - it checks your speed, not your throttle settings.

And yes, the radar thing happened to me once. It is irritating, even if rather rare. You can try setting the subsystem HP higher in the tbl file or booth the HP of the AWACS altogether..or both.

Alright, now the mission where the HOL Unknown destroyer jumps to the Perseverance's postion immediately after the Perseverance destroys the Typhon class destroyer: it keeps saying I failed, even though the debrief does not have anything implicitly negative in it. The Perseverance and Sabre are supposed to be destroyed, yes?

No....

Hm...did you wait for the escape pods to leave in the previous mision? no? You don't jump out in the  previous mission- you get a red alert.

The Perserverance is waiting for the escape pods (to pick them up) before it makes it's getaway. If you warped out in the previous mission then the pods don't show up and the Perserverance doesn't move..and gets destroyed.
This was fixed in in the fixed files (by breaking your warp, so you CAN'T leave). Download the fix or replay the previous mission and just wait for the red-alert trigger.

When is this campaign being put on the Wiki's campaign list? Noticed it wasn't on there, and I know people who ONLY look at the wiki, not the forums.

Uhh, Trashman, have you ever considered giving the GTF Falcon some shields?  Every hit on that ship causes damage.  It's durability is absolute crap with no shielding at all.

It just needs the surface shield flag. Easy enough to add yourself (look up ships.tbl in the wiki, get a VP file opener, extract the ships.tbl, look up the falcon, add flag, profit)
I did it because I got absolutely frustrated with 40% of the enemy shots penetrating the shield mesh of that ship.

Get the GTF Falcon from freespacemod.net
That should be the very latest version with the fixed shield mesh. Methinks.

EDIT: ;7

Yo, TrashMan.  I just got the first FoW (don't ask where I've been; I won't answer that and will dismiss it as white noise) and I've got to ask: Did you ever fix the problem with the Typhoon?  I know it's been a while since anyone's asked, I'm sure, but I'd like to know if there's a fix to it or not.

Have you tried the version of FoW that this thread is about? If yes, do you have a debug log showing an error? If no, why not?

No, I meant the first FoW.  Why, was it fixed in this?

You're in the wrong thread. This is Flames of War - Coming of the Storm. I'm not sure if it is the same thing as Chapter 1, but I'm guessing not. Please go to the actual release thread of FoW Chapter 1 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=43835.0) (NOT the alpha test release thread), download FoW Chapter 1 from there and try it. If problem persists, ask about in in that thread.

I just want to know, where i suppose to put files from COS fix
tables - easy to find
mission - this is a bit problem because in data folder of main mod folder there is missions directory and i need to overwrite those files?
Two loose textures gtcvraven.dds and gtccrusader.dds goes to models dir in mod data folder?

Most likely. If in doubt, copy the old files to another location and then copy the new ones to \fow_cots\data\missions\ .

\models\ is a directory for models. Those are textures. Textures go to \data\maps\ (create the directory \fow_cots\data\maps\ if it doesn't exist and place the .dds files there).

I haven't finished it yet, but here's what i can tell for now :
 - The ships are really, really cool and shiny (i like the thunderbolt so damn much)
 - The story is okay
 - The missions are just like some Lotto.... it's either buggy and stupid (eg, there is multiple missions crashing when you restart them) or whatever, or really cool ones too (eg, the Mjolnir defense one !)
 - The easter eggs are too... uh.... well, i feel like they're a bit too flashy. Having the ET stuff and the big "EGG ALERT" kindda ruined the mission in my opinion...
 - The briefings are JUST DAMN NONSENSE ! Most of ships aren't the good one when you click em, and sometime even the info you get in the briefing is bogus (i recall once about a ship's name, and once about having a hecate instead of an orion or something)

Well, play it if you got time, it's cool but there are sure better ones o.o

Hehe...funny I had a few poepl complain about the Mjolnir mission. Just goes to show you that Your Mileage May Varry.

I will, somewhere in the future, re-realse this thing (since I'm currently going trough it with DOTA tables and improving and fixing) - probably together with FOW:DOTA.

In the mission with the AWACS, I can't get the vorpal bunny to appear.  I always shoot the Egg box and then hurry over to the satellite, but the bunny never appears.

The Vorpal Bunny doesn't appear in that mission. The ET calling home easter egg is in that one.

When you get to the mission where you have to escort 4 convoy vessels..THAT'S when the Vorpal Bunny will appear..if you scan the cargo near the civilian outpost. You'll also get something to fight it with.
