Just fooled around with the settings and think the game looks best when using the flags "-ambient_factor 100" and "-no_emissive_light".

just "-ambient_factor 0" somehow isn't dark enough because of the emissive light. Without that everything is black, factor 100 brings it back just enough to look really cool. What do you think?

I recommend to use following settings:

-fov 0.65 -spec_exp 7.0 -spec_tube 5.0 -spec_point 8.6 -spec_static 3.0 -ambient_factor 75

Nice settings Tolwyn. Dark enough and those specular reflections look really nice now =)

You know, that value suggests to me that I could specify an ambient factor anywhere from 0 to 255. Is there a problem with that range that I'm not aware of?

Ya.. although at 75 my ships do look really spooky looking    (With all the floodlights lighting the hull.)
