We've shown you the Sobek class battlestar before; you've seen Slayer's original design sketches, Meleardil's model, then Tan.J.'s high poly model. What you haven't seen is what she'll actually look like in the game, and that's where I came in - she's ship enough to have more then 3 parents, so I came in to texture her and deliver the final look.
After some modifications on both Meleardil's and Tan.J.'s meshes, which included setting up UVW maps, cutting them up into workable pieces, modifying geometry to get her closer to Slayer's original vision and finally doing a lot of optimizing to ultimately make it playable in the game, I was able to effectively bake normal maps from the high poly model - I think you'll agree the effort was worth it. The rest was basically lots and lots of photoshop work.
Thanks to FUBAR's converting skills I'm able to show you the ship as she appears in the game itself; she's not completely done (missing LODs, detail boxes, debris, destroyable subsystems etc) but the most detailed LOD is functional. The rest of the work won't change her visually - this is how she will appear in the game. So, enjoy the pics!

Good Gravy, this is great!
:D
-
Those thruster glows are freaking epic.
-
Heh heh. Just wait until you see this baby in motion :D
-
Suppose I can now post this too.

Disclaimer: Yea, it's a render.

This lady is shouting "make my day!" :D
-
OMG
I just jizzed :O
-
You boys have saved my marriage!
-
****, it looks awesome, so frikking awesome that I can't believe it.
-
That looks outstanding and you've now got me wondering if my comp will be able to play this at a decent frame rate!
Just on a random side note: can you enter the flight pod, fly along inside it and out the other end? Please note I'm not talking amount combat landings or anything like that... yet :nervous:

Yes. You can.
We're working on the landing inside it too. Can't promise anything on that score but you definitely will be able to fly inside the pods.
-
I am completely in awe... and very, very happy!
Thank you very much for the great work!

You mean like this? :P

Touche Newman!
-
Good lord, you weren't joking about the image heavy tag.
This is outstanding work, really looking forward to seeing it in game :)
-
Since I was only looking at lvlshot-ed pics I failed to notice that photobucket resized all pics. Replaced all links with tinypic ones, once enlarged they should be in their original (higher) resolutions.
-
Thx for the larger pics
Wallpaperizored.
-
Amazing job you've done :)
-
She looks absolutely gorgeous! One thing I noticed is that the launch tubes alternate their directions, but the flightpod doesn't look like it's high enough to support 2 separate levels, what's the point of having to stick half the vipers to the roof :P
-
Same mechanism as Pegasus :P

To launch twice as many fighters at once, even if you have to rotate them into position :p
-
Same mechanism as Pegasus :P
This. BSG's handwaving is good enough for us. :D
-
The tubes aren't exactly in two levels. The ones that are rotated downwards are on the same height level as the rest. The point being that they take less horizontal space that way so you can have more tubes per pod. Height wise they don't take more space, and there's actually plenty of vertical space between them and the deck for any supposed mechanism that rotates the fighters. Plus like others have said already same system was used on the Pegasus so we're hardly making it up.
-
OK now I'm confused. Why would the fighters need to be rotated? 2 landing strips one facing up and one facing down. Half tubes facing up and half down. Logically the tubes facing up would be loaded from the top half of the pod, ones facing down the bottom half. The only time any rotation would be needed is moving them from the ship to the pod or from top half of the pod to bottom half.
-
Or if moving them from one pod to the other, which we know is possible since the mini. At any rate you'd want a way to rotate them if needed.
-
Well you have to rotate people and everything in that case so yea there has to be a way it just needs to be big enough to hold ships. Think rotating cube with doors that always has the artificial gravity pointing down relative to the entrance as the room rotates so you don't even feel the movement.
-
Yea was thinking about a prechamber like that myself. Long story short however is it was done in the show :P
-
Jesus! Is it techno bla-bla already? ...nerds!
On the birthday party of your girlfriend would you start a discussion about the proper size of her new artificial boobs with the rest of the guys invited?
-
Oh, do shut up. :D
-
No we would only talk about them if they were real and spectacular :P
-
Quite so, quite so. Otherwise you just point you finger real obvious-like, say "fake" so everyone can hear you, and move on.
Anyway I think we covered the technobabble part sufficiently so it doesn't need to disturb Mele anymore who never, ever, ever, and not even then, engages in nerd talk. Apart from those few hundred examples I can think of but who's counting :)
And now I'll stop derailing my own thread.
-
I can just imagine cylon pilots/raiders going into battle with it and thinking 'OH GOD IT'S SMILING AT ME'
-
Wow, just noticed how spiny this thing is. So many launch tubes! And missile tubes! And some other things on the back that are a different shape, but don't look friendly. Not to mention a fair few turrets...
-
Ouch ! Incredible nice work.
-
My god, it's full of win!
Congrats on getting that thing ingame ;) What I like most about Slayer's design is that it clearly is a battlestar, while having it's very own design features. It's not just something kitbashed together from Galactica and/or Pegasus parts like oh-so-many other fan designs
-
...it doesn't need to disturb Mele anymore who never, ever, ever, and not even then, engages in nerd talk.
Physicists never do! Sci-fi modder nerd physicists do it even fewer times!

Dont forget the pretty ugly recreation of this ship in one of the Second Life BSG Roleplay sims.

Wait, what?

What? Any pictures? I must have missed it. I know about the cloning of another SS design, the Bolitho, but not this one.
-
Someone ripped off a Slayer design again? Huh. At least it's proof he's doing things right :)
Still, if you got links to that or some screenshots I'd like to see it.
-
The graphics and the models look amazing. But the only thing I dont like about the ship is the the runway part is longer then the landing tubes. I also think the tubes look too flat. There much shorter in height then the Pegasus or Galactica. And why are the top two engines shorter then the bottom? In the cannon battlestars there the same length.
Also does this mean R1 is ready for uploading? Post it already! It looks done enough.
By the way who is Slayer? Is there a place I can look at his designs? Id like to see them.

here are some concepts of Starslayer:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=46790.0
The Top Engines of Galactica are larger and longer then the bottom ones.
Pegasus Engines are all the same size.
Also take a closer look at the rear section of the Theseus, you'll notice something.

Oh.You mean StarSlayer. I thought Slayer was someone different. And I dont deserve a facepalm. We all make mistakes.
-
And I dont deserve a facepalm. We all make mistakes.
Actually, that was mostly for this:
Also does this mean R1 is ready for uploading? Post it already! It looks done enough.
All meant in good humor, though. :D
-
What are those 4(ish) box things between the two main engines?
-
Nothing special really just grill work.
-
So for an utter BSG n00b like myself, would someone be so kind as to point out the launch tubes on the model? I've read all the discussion on whether they look right or not, and I've scoured all of those shots, but I can't figure out where the heck people are talking about. :p
(The model itself is amazing, though. :))
-
The tubes along the sides of both pods are used for launching vipers.
-
...ah. I totally didn't even notice those. :p

Consider that this is an attack battlestar. It's not meant to stay in a prolonged fight with baseships - it's meant to jump in, unleash hell on it's target, then get out before it takes too much fire. To facilitate this, flight pods of different proportions then on Galactica would be needed - you'd want to be able to recover your wings more quickly since this ship can take less damage then a Galactica type battlestar. Wider pods allow for more vipers to land at the same time.
To the rest I say not every battlestar needs to look the same. And no matter what you do someone will dislike the design, what's important to us is that we like it and judging by people's reactions the majority do like it as well. In all honesty you'd be hard pressed to find a BSG ship designed by Slayer that I don't like :)
-
I see that now. Its supposed to be slender looking because its like a battlestar version of a sports car. Its meant to be fast. Thanks for clearing that up newman.
-
This is brilliant! The screenshots are nothing short of beautiful! My god, the dev team have an astounding attention to detail. Excellent work again guys. Thank you for the update :)
-
What are those 4(ish) box things between the two main engines?
Unsure, but most engine details on the Sobek are similar to Galactica's. (http://www.modelermagic.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/kg_cg_ns_galactica-020.jpg)
-
It looks good! There was something I originally thought was a mis-baked texture something, but upon closer inspection it's supposed to be that way.
The fighter bay pods look kinda Cylon-ish; they've got that sort of curve kinda like the basestar has.
-
I'd say that this is yet another example of sweet, awesome, work of battlestar magic, but I constantly give your work all sorts of compliments (which you deserve), so to break the monotony, I'll say that YOU'VE DONE A TERRIBLE JOB AND YOUR WORK LOOKS LIKE IT WAS DONE BY A SIX YEAR OLD WITH SHAKY HANDS.
Also, it looks awesome. (Damnit.)
-
can't wait guys... you're awesome!!!!!!!!
EDIT: some people are never satisfied and happy... of course everyone can say his opinion, but if you think i follow bsg since is come in italy and i soon downloaded BTRL, you can't imagine how happy i am to see this update everytime... thanks :)
-
OMFGWTFBBQ!! That's really a ship!
-
Dual landing strips O_O! 8 in all cause theres 4 landing decks holy THe battle star looks awsome do you guys have technical specs out? Squadrons info fire power, nucs thigns of that nature I seen a thread about how big it was but i have yet to find any combat specs.
seams like it could give the pegasus a run for its money although the hangar decks looks like it can only fit 1 story high for vipers yet thers launch tubes upside down which means theres 2 launch decks? atleast what 8 squadrons? of 20? im very curious about the in depth stuff and how the story will start... where does this battle star hail from? how did it escape the cylon attack? was it deployed on a mission when the attack hapened.... ect ect you get my drift I love your work guys this mod is making me very curious in the story you will create.
I guess makign this mod is liek having your own tv show? if you release it part by part you can get creative as you go enough to make your imagination want to make up all the little details. :)
Any how if there is a technical Spec sheet for the Battlestar id like to see it to feed my anticipation i wanna know as much as possible about the ship well be serving on.
-
It's smaller than Galactica, meant to be a quick-strike Battlestar.
Everyone has been trying to avoid the typical fandom of "It's like Pegasus only super DUPER BIG! ...and have Super Admiral Cain II!"
-
Yep. The Sobek couldn't even beat Galactica, let alone Pegasus.
We're avoiding releasing any kind of specs cause we may have to change things later as we develop the game.
-
Well, some of the info on her won't change. One of it is that she's an attack battlestar, late 1st Cylon War vintage. Only a few of the class were commissioned in time to see combat (iirc), and it's one of the first (if not the very first) battlestars this big that had fixed pods and didn't have to retract them to jump. This made it a perfect choice for quick strike missions - she's fast and well armed compared to her larger cousins, but the armor suffered. This battlestar class was meant to jump in, do a lot of damage in a short amount of time, and jump out. The wide flight pods that have dual strips on each landing deck make it possible to retrieve more vipers at once, shortening the time it takes to recall all birds prior to a jump. Ship length is about 1000m, and she has 80 launch tubes (40 each pod). The fact some of the tubes are upside down simply means that they were saving space - you can see the same design on the Mercury class. One could assume there's a prechamber that rotates the viper into a correct position before it's loaded into a tube, but we didn't fanwank that into too much detail :)
The ship was a result of the changing tactics near the end of the war when the colonials were spending more time on the attack.
-
thank you for this info :) and yea little details like that i like i dunno why al this "fan wank" lol its little stuff like that that i like to know so i can imagine better and feel more into the ship.
And so its stronger than a Valkyrie class though? sounds cool :) sides if shes got a good Flack barrage haul wont matter unless she takes a nuke strike and if it has its full Viper compliments then it just gives us pilots an excuse to fly more caps and do alot more defencive escorts to prevent any direct hits to the battlestar sort of like in FS1 when uhad to escort the Galatea<< fergot how to spell it but the sister ship to the bastion.
-
Definitely stronger and bigger than the Valkyrie type.
