Title: Starships of Gaming
Post by: azile0 on May 09, 2014, 11:05:27 pm
I recently made a mashup video of a few different space games, including FTL, STO, FS2, and SW:BF2. I was inspired by seeing this very well done sci-fi mashup (http://vimeo.com/46927209) and wanted to make my own variant, only with video games.

Here is my iteration (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rDQahA4yboY). I hardly ever do editing with my videos, and this one was edit-heavy so it's apparent that I worked this up in Windows Movie Maker.

That's needlessly exclusive.

Watch the original video, even if not this one. It's enough to rescue the song by far.

Without clicking the link, I'm guessing that the song is "Starships".

EDIT: ****ing nailed it.

After reading that first response I was afraid it was gonna be Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" so it was quite a relief that it wasn't. The damage was done though, now we've all thought about how some people call me the space cowboy.

I was actually hoping that the video game version had a little more sync to the song itself
That would be what would really make it significantly better. However, not bad

Some people call me a Gangster of Love, but the charges were dropped :nervous:

Nah, not the kind of music I'd expect from a vid such as this one.

This, unfortunately. The original video works significantly better because it syncs quite closely to the music. I think that's probably the single most important thing you can do when making what is essentially a music video (especially when you pick such a forceful, lyrically driven song).

It also has a few other advantages - more people shots are available from their source material, which provides more emotion, and, crucially, every shot of a starship in a TV show or movie has been designed with its visual appeal as the primary driver - every shot is a hero shot, almost. Games have hero shots, but they're rare in actual gameplay - they tend to come from cutscenes, ingame or otherwise.

So, if you do another version of this, I'd suggest more frequent cuts, focused on syncing with the music, and more sources, focusing as much as possible on the very best shots from cutscenes and other visually oriented sources, rather than restricting yourself to gameplay shots only.

You probably also want to get footage from more than the 3 or 4 games you were using.

Rhyming "love" with "love", giant crash cymbal on every other backbeat, the Pompetus...What more can a first verse do?
