I have a problem with the first mission of the campaign.  I can play through the whole mission until I return to the Wellington.  When I am less than 30000 m away, the game crashes.  Looked at the mission in FRED and found the problematic event, but I didn't know what to do with it does anybody have a fix?

By the way: Love the game.  The intro cutscene is great.

Are you using Direct3D mode? This problem usually occurs, if one switches the game from OpenGL to D3D :)

Tolwyn’s reputation for risk taking with other people’s lives was considered  to understate the facts. The admiral’s willingness to sacrifice anyone or anything to achieve his objectives had long been lauded in the popular press. He was “the man who got things done”.- Colonel Blair

No errors, no random CTDs, just pure fun and proof of why getting hit with missiles is a bad thing.

Nay.  I am usin' OpenGL.  The event wot has a problem is: when distance is less than 30,000, change ship class, an' then it has five ships change class, by Blackbeard's sword.

this seems to be a random error. Try to play the mission again. I believe, that Starman also posted a workaround somewhere.

If that still doesn't work, just delete or fix the event, then put the modified mission in your WCSaga data/missions folder.

tried that, but WCSaga didn't read the file from that folder.

you will need to extract the file using the vp tools from our website. Simply delete both change-ship-class events, otherwise you won't see the battlegroup on your way back.

Does VPMage have a manual?  I can't figure out how to delete part of the VP.

Odd problem, Jake. It should work. Make sure you are putting the mission in the WCSaga missions folder, not the normal FS data folders. Check for typos, too. Don't rename the mission after you extract it.

And VPMage is only for creating VPs. To delete files you can try QuickVP, although you won't need to do that.

I edited the VP and it still didn't work, although I may not have done it right.

EDIT: I extracted all files from the VP into the data folder, deleted the VP, and it still crashes.  I can even see that the ships are not invisible.  If I edit the campaign file and removed the mission would it work?

Well, you can cheat a little if you delete the campaign-file completly and play all the missions in the simulator.

But first try this :

In your "data" folder, create a "missions" folder. Inside this, put this file here :

http://wcsaga.hard-light.net/team/Starman/downloads/prol_mission01.rar

and play again. It should work then. Though this seems to be a random error affecting only a few users, and we are using this particular part in all missions in the prologue, pls report back when it continues to happen. There is a patch coming where we will most likely work around this problem, but I can't tell yet when it will be finished.

I'm having this crash problem too, on a fresh install and normally stable machine.  I downloaded the file you linked, but it didn't seem to help.  However, unlike the OP, I'm rather unfamiliar with FS2 modding, so it's possible I did it wrong.

I created a directory called c:\..\Wing Commander Saga Prologue\data\missions and decompressed the two files from the rar into it.  No dice.  Do I need to unpack the rest of the game files before this will work?

I'm dying to get through the training mission and see the rest of this game - just discovered it, been a WC fan since about the time the second game was released.

I'd suggest opening both files in notepad and where you see this line

$Name:  XSTR("Trainee", -1)

Change it to

$Name:  XSTR("Trainee1", -1) or $Name:  XSTR("Trainee2", -1)

Then run the game and note the name of the mission when you run it (it will appear in the mission brief). If you get Trainee as your mission name instead of Trainee1 or Trainee2 then something is wrong with the way you installed the mission. If you do get one of those then the problem is the mission/game itself and we can investigate further.

I reinstalled the game, tried your suggestion, and it worked just fine.  Weird.

But hey, it works, so I'm happy.  Awesome job on the game, really look forward to future installments.

What I'm not so happy about is trying to kill that first cap ship

Hint : Go into the mission simulator and play the bombing run mission. You have a very sluggish bomber (but with high payload) there and can try to attack capships without all the chatter that is in the campaign missions :)

Another hint :  Get on a big distance (2500+ ), target the ship and select a good subsystem (i.e. engines). Then arm your torpedo and start moving towards the vessel. Once you have an active lock, afterburn to the target and at around 500 meter distance drop the torpedo and immediately change your vector (or you will get fryed by the explosion of the torpedo) :)

Capship bombing runs are extremly fun and give you all the adrenaline you need :)

9 out of 10 voices in my head always tell me that I'm not insane. The 10th is only humming the melody of TETRIS.
