Sins wasn't too bad, apart from the Pirate Raids that came with annoying frequency. As for Rogue Universe, yeah, I've got it, it would have been ok if it had been an open-ended sim, but there's way too many issues for it to work as one, the storyline involves sending you from one end of the map to the other, and the 'open ended' aspect is ruined by the fact that there are no 'real' resources in the game, if you mine out an asteroid field, simply leave the system, come back, and they have all returned. It's kind of like Freelancer in that respect, it's hard to create a 'realistic' economic environment using pre-gen or random features. Procedurals may have a future in it somewhere, however.... hmmmmm......

By sheer coincidence I just finished playing (if you can call it that) the demo. Thought people were being unnecessarily hard on it until I tried it myself. My joystick doesnt even work for one, and I still cannot complete the first bloody fight. Hard is okay, but not boring. These guys take SOOOO many shots to die and I wasted all my missiles randomly enjoying GFX (and they didnt come back starting over lol).

Freelancer did not suck.

As an open-ended game, it most certainly did suck. Storyline was fun top play through, but after that there was nothing to do but upgrade your ship. No particular challenges of any kind, not even a battleship anywhere for testing out the new torpedoes that are only available after finishing the storyline.

AS an open-ended game it provided me with 50 times more gameplay then the FS2 storyline. Mods included, that game lasted nearly 5 years.

And mods not included, considering the unfairness of comparing an unmodded game to a modded one?

The FS2 mods kept me interested for about, oh, 6 months. Its really a matter of personal preference - I liked freelancer a heck of a lot more the FS2, because it was freeform and because there was always some new system or base I could find hidden in the depths of some nebula. In FS2, its GOKILLTHATSHIP, GOKILLTHISSHIP, OHCRAPBOMBERS, OHCRAPFIGHTERS, ALPHAHELP! Sure, I'm being a little mean to FS2, but seriously, I found that kind of gameplay got incredibly repetitious after while. Freelancer... I could go back and play freelancer and still have fun in that game, even if i have the locations of half the bases memorized. It just does not get old.

On a completely different note, Descent 3's gameplay consists entirely of OMGKILLSTUFF, and that doesn't get old either - I played that game for like 7 years.

I hate single player in freelancer, I think it sucks. I liked the multiplayer far, far more, even though the entire objective of multiplayer is to upgrade your ship. Yes, that is the ONLY thing you do - upgrade your ship. And you know what? I like doing it. I like doing that so much that it kept me enticed for 5 freakin' years.

It all comes down to what gameplay someone likes and what gameplay they don't like. I think FS2 is the best mission based space sim ever created, and I think Freelancer is the best open-ended spacesim ever created. I just happen to like open-ended a heck of a lot more.

Freelancer was fun but there were some issues that kept jumping on the player's face.

1. The scale was all wrong. Battleships, the biggest ships in the game, were barely as big as cruisers in FS2. As a result, the cruisers were tiny. And the planets... probably as big as a Sathanas. And the distances... Flying from one planet to another felt like going to the nearby store to pick up some juice.

2. Every system just had to be littered with asteroid fields and/or debris fields and/or nebulas. And jump holes were always located within the said fields.

3. The story died at the end. It began as your average exciting mystery where you can't really be sure of who is good and who is bad. Then came the Nomads, these human-possessing opportunistic parasites. The story dropped a notch here, but nothing too bad yet. It was at the end when suddenly we discovered that an omnipotent species had created these parasites, as well as a ****ing huge gate system, making intergalactic travel possible. And, as luck would have it, the artifact you had been carrying from the start was the key to activating that gate network. Which in turn, for some reason, would rid us of the Nomads. Gah.

4. In addition to the story, there was supposed to be a branching storyline, but apparently due to Nitro$oft's schedule demands it had to be dropped out. Other things were left out as well. For example, black holes.

5. Aside from the 'campaign', the game was really repetitive. You get a ship. Then you get equipment. Then you either start transporting goods (with permanently fixed prices) or take jobs from varying contractors. Jobs that all involve you flying to point A (and maybe B and C as well), shooting down bad guys and tractoring in what's left of their ships. Then you find new bases (that are all alike) and buy a new ship and new gizmos. This continues until you've acquired the Ultimate Weapon of DoomTM.

6. The balancing wasn't good. Liberty is supposed to be the strongest house in the game, with enough military resources to battle two other houses simultaneously. Instead, it's actually so weak that a single Saber could bring them all down. And that's the other point. When you have the strongest ship in the game, you can take out anything. Fighters, transports, battleships... anything, without even scratching your shields.

Still I admit that I played it quite a lot back in the days. Until the above issues became overwhelming.

Freelancer was a great game..especially with some mods. The storyline was OK I guess(I really hate some parts of it, especially the ending, but the overall execution was superb), I loved the singleplayer. I got some beef with the level/power progression of fighters/equipment and the whipmpyness of capital ship (nothing that can't be fixed with modding)

At first, I actually thought Freelancer was okay. But one day I realized that combat was the most redundant of any game I ever played, all trading consisted of was going from A to B, and multi was nearly the same as single-player.

The only thing I actually liked (admittedly, I liked this part more than many FS features) was exploring systems. And even that got tired after a while, and pretty much the only things mods added were new ships, extremely redundant "new" systems, stolen content from other universes, and armor upgrades or things like that.

All of the ships had the same exact speed for Christ's sake...

I-War 2 was far better than Freelancer, it had that much more of a challenge since you had to fight for any cargo that had any worth. BTW wouldnt there used to be a mod of I-War for Freespace?
