Title: The FSU tilemap package
Post by: The E on August 19, 2011, 05:26:56 am
As requested in this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=77806.0), here's a package containing some of the tilemaps that have been deleted from the MVPs version 3612, or are liable to be deleted in future versions.

Contents:

AWACTile* series
Capital* series (Includes Capital0* series)
CapVTile* series
CorVStile* series
Cruiser03* series
CruisTile* series
ctile* series
DocTile* series
Install01* series
Miner01* series
SuperTile* series
TCov* series
TSoup* series

Download:
http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/E/stuff/Tilemaps.7z

If you find some missing ones, please let me know so I can incorporate them. Cruiser02 has so far eluded me, but I believe some digging around our repository will turn them up eventually.
Cruiser02 is not in the FSU repository. If someone has the FSU version on HDD, I would be much obliged if a link could be sent to me.

Does this package also contain glow, shine, and any normal maps that may have been created for the tiles?

Yes, of course.

So would this package eventually preclude the need to keep a copy of the 3.6.10 MediaVPs around for certain older mods, or was there some other tablestuffs that would still require them?

I think not, given that the most pressing issue seems to be deleted textures. Also, if a mod can be broken by table changes in the mvps, it's the mod that should be changed, not the mvps.

That's good; I'll be able to save a bit of disk space then. :)

This pack is a great idea, but I suggest that it shouldn't only contain tilemaps, but also certain deleted effects. So far, I can only think of hornet_trail.ani (which is a lo-res predecessor to missilespew* particles), but there could be more of them. Not to mention Mediavps contain a ton of old effects which could be moved to an external pack, because they're no longer used by Mediavps themselves.

... what?

Seriously then, if it's going to be EVERYTHING removed or changed, why NOT just download the older version.

And where do you get that we have a ton of old effects? And what, if we update them, we should also maintain the OLD ones that we just upgraded and when we upgrade those again later we should maintain the TWO old ones and so on?

No. This pack was created specifically to solve issues with models using removed mvp textures.

Well, the problem with hornet_trail.ani is basically the same thing, only applied to weapons. There's nothing named like that in retail VPs, so any weapon that used it will complain. The old stuff I was talking about was mostly the old beam effects, which are no longer used by Mediavps, but still come in handy for mods (since they're drop-in replacements for retail bitmaps). Aside from that, most other effects seem to be used.

This is the first time I've heard about this being a problem. So I'm not going to care much.

The beam packs can be found independently packed (both versions, in fact), so I don't think its as much of a problem.

how do i install this?
just unpack and drop it in the Mediavps_3612 folder and change all the mod.ini that reference the old MVPs to look there?
or is it some thing more complicated?

Thanks for any help you can give me :)

Im curious to know why you would need this though... Tilemaps are fairly outdated now :doubt:

Some older campaigns with a few outdated mods probably still need it.

Yes, because there are some people who play the old campaigns instead of just regularly coming on the forums to complain we don't have enough classic-style campaigns...

there is a large number of community models, some pretty good ones, which were made when tile mapping from the mediavps was the way to go which haven't for whatever reason been upgraded

To explain: The tilemap package is not something you install. It's a repository of textures that some older models may use; it should only be used in cases where a model references a texture that was exclusively in the mediavps (See the list in the first post to see which textures are in it). If you're getting an error message that basically says "Could not load texture <name>", where <name> is in the list above, then you can extract it from the package. Otherwise, this is something that can be safely ignored.

Behold, for I have recovered the Cruiser02 tilemaps (http://www.ciinet.org/kevin/cruiser02tiles.7z), thanks to a long forgotten backup I had!
