Title: Set frame rate?
Post by: zloaf on June 19, 2018, 03:10:10 am
How do I change the max frame rate. I got a new 144 hz monitor but the game seems to only run at 60-85 hz. I know the engine can do 120. How do I set it to use 120?

Turn vsync off. If it is off, your system just isn't capable of a higher FPS. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There's also the -no_fps_capping flag

I also have 144hz screens, and with vsync enabled the fps tends to cap at either 60 or 72fps, reaching 120 only with barely anything on the screen. (But that's what I get for running a system with a cpu from 2011)
Disabling shadows, godrays and framebuffer thrusters tend to be easy ways to gain a lot of extra fps.

Please be aware that FSO does not handle high framerates particularly well. The turn rate of missiles is higher at lower framerates so you might encounter gameplay issues if you disable framerate capping.

On sort of the same token, if you have very low frame rate, beams will end up doing less damage.

This is theoretically fixed since February 14th (https://github.com/scp-fs2open/fs2open.github.com/pull/1604/).

Ooh, nice.

I've tried the -no_vsync flag without success. The game still runs at 82 FPS. I have an I7-8700k and 1080ti so it should run it without issue (I know I have a really powerful system and I spend it playing 20 year old games). I also recently acquired a 144 hz 1440p monitor so maybe that higher resolution is the issue?

It's not necessarily a matter of system power - FSO is just a really ****ty inefficient engine and therefore it can bring top end machines to their knees while they boggle and gasp "What? What in ****'s hell is this program asking me to do?"

You should probably be able to hit at least 120 in a blank scene with no action, though...

What version of FSO are you using? I have made some significant improvements to the performance of FSO in the nightlies  so you could try that.
I can maintain 60FPS with all features enabled on Linux with the open source drivers when playing the intro cutscene of BP WiH Act 2 and that's with an RX 480. 80 FPS with a 1080ti seems a bit low to me.

The #1 easiest way to increase performance is to remove the -enable_shadows flag (if you're using it). If you're using a recent nightly build, you can also go into the in-game options and turn down the lighting settings; The E recently made that slider work nicely with various recent rendering engine changes.
