Title: [WIPs] Duat/some rocks double progress thread

Right, first off is a zod space superiority fighter, originally thought of a security craft and as part of a civilian mining corp.


Second is a civilian miner, intended for stripping asteroid fields for valuable minerals. And part of the same organisation as the fighter.

The fighter screams Seth MkII for some reason, with a touch of Tauret.

How big is the miner supposed to be ? Not easy to judge from here.

Very cool, I can see the relation was not intentional though.
The miner is about triton sized, maybe a big bigger.

Loving the Duat (it's the fighter, right?), although I think it could use some more polies in the "wings" to break the silhuette as it's implied int he texture.

The miner... I dunno, something's odd about it, and I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe because the model doesn't seem that big.

The miner seems like a vacuum cleaner. Seems like a small object, not a tritan sized object.

You see it small because you're comparing it directly with the fighter. Also it's clear that the model is still in development phase, once some things like maybe turrets or mobile parts are added it will look bigger I'm sure.

Actually I was looking at the concept and the model. Even in the concept, it looks like a small ship.
Of course it is on development phase, hence me making the critic :)

I'm being reminded by the Isis, which is fighter-sized. The front part of the miner corresponds to the windscreen of the Isis which (to me) is giving the illusion of it being smaller than it should be.

No one. But if it's supposed to be a one man miner, I reckon it would have some sort of cockpit. Also, there would be no point in having a container (don't think a fighter sized miner would have the ability to refine the ore on-site, and breaking the asteroid in tiny pieces just to fit on the container, would be "stupid")

The cannister is, well a way to store away raw materials , not refined ore , that is then transported at a dedicated refinery. The thought process behind having it detectable is to allow the miner to stay in place at the field and the canisters are transported to said refinery by freighters.

Also having the canister behave like cargo crates allows to setup a depot where ships comes in to get teh raw ore to transport away, making a dynamic area to for example setup a mission to take place there.

Nice fighter there, I like the techy exposed look around the engines. It's a shame the texture is so dark in that area though, it hides a lot of that detail. Perhaps some baked self-illumination could help bring it out more?

The miner's looking cool too, though a bit like an oversize Isis, like Darius said.  How does the mining process work? The ship doesn't seem to have any intakes for the raw materials, and its layout doesn't seem to be fit for loading the rocks directly into the container.

I think it's meant to have a robotic arm on the cavity of the front, well that's what I understood from the draft.

Right, one more update: Had to redo some of the parts and add some more,  almost done with the model maps just need to tweak the normals and clean up irregularitys. c: (yay)

Hey, those blues and purples in the armour has to come from somewhere :p There be precious gems in those ships.

I have been a bit neglectful on this of late, anyhow heres an update.

Moved the arms to the underside, redesigned the cargo dock a bit and the bridge area is about done.. just some more polish and tweaking before I can get started uvmapping. Maybe create the rocks before finishing the arms is a good idea.

Yes, quite "adjusts his glasses" :p

Created two mockups, the only area that is "finished is around the crate and so far the mining "laser" on top is unfinished and needs to be finished, the arms are a bit weedy and unfinished.
Model itself needs more detailing here and there. c:

Am I the only one who absolutely LOATHED the Worker's voice? I would always feed them to the Beast when convenient, along with the rest of the ships that had annoying voice actors.

After a major windows shenanigans that almost cost me the last 3 months of models raws/fsu related stuff. I fixed it like a boss and in addition grinded out an update: Fixing and adjusting started the rough normals/texturing machine parts/glow map and added a quick shine map.

About 70% done with texturing, most of what is left to do is adding details underneath and texture cleaning/adjusting.
Aiming to be done texturing by friday so I start can creating the animation table for the various docking and "mining" actions.

The teal is a bit difference from the blue foundon otherzod ships.
Why not blue? Blues are present in the vasudan colour palette.

Hokey since I will not be 100% done in time its missing debris, lods1,2,3,4, complete animation table to the mining sequence and the laser itself.
Will be releasing this detail0 version + completed textures and docking/undocking animation to ore canister. I'll resume work on this model after the competition is done.

Well yes, blue is indeed present in the Vasudan color palette ... although it's almost always been in the form of lights, not paint. And teal I'm not so sure about? There was some very dull teal on your upgraded Osiris, but I don't remember if it was like that on the original.

Still, since it's a "civilian" ship, maybe that's justification enough for a more colorful paint job.

The osiris teal was directly taken out from the retail map from the orginal, I can't recall if FSU did a "mediavp" version of it.
And yes I agree the blue was present as lights, mostly. But I'll bring the anuket and setekh as examples where they use a dark blue.

What strikes me the most is not the blue but the yellow. I agree that industrial equipment usually comes in super-saturated yellow, but I feel it's a bit too strong of a contrast with the rest of the model. Otherwise, a very nice model and texture, I'm sure you'll get the price for the contest.

yea, if i were to choose this model would win, hands down
it's something unique (i'm already having an idea how to abuse the mining laser) and the texture quality is just Oddgrim-like awesome

Here it is, as completed I can manage, it has destructible subsystems and a functional animation with the asteroid  provided in the download. (Only missing debris, lods and the mining laser is nonfunctional.)

But is there a more complete version (at least with debris) out and downloadable by now?

(I've settled on the Nhu for the roster of my T-V-era frighter for Of Shivans and Men; so adding the Duat too is only logical and convinient)
