Title: My Ultimate Orion :D
Post by: TrashMan on September 13, 2005, 05:20:55 pm
Still has missing debris and needs some testing and tweaking, but otherwise it works :D

Not bad for a 3 days work with a malfunctioning mouse, eh?

...Release...please? For one thing I'd like to look at the model before picking yours over Galemp's remap.

Whoa man..it needs slight refining first. Those are screenies for a test run.

It has all the POF data and all LODs, but I still want to polish it up a bit..maby add a tad more detail.

As it stands with all the turret it comes up to 5342 polys...

Aside from the texturing, what's different about it? It looks the same as it always did to me.

But Thanks

What's changed? I mean...It looks like either the original high-poly version, or the old one with a couple more boxes added?

I'm going to need some less-dramatically lit shots to make a judgement about its shape.

This is considerably less ultimate than Galemp's Ultimate Orion...

Galmps/Bobs ultimate has 11000 polys, mine has 5400.. of course it's less "Ultimate" in the useless detail deparment..

I tried to add detail but keep the Orion "flying armored brick" looks.

I'm gonna release hte first version for testing in a minute ...

I like the phrase 'useless detail'. You make it sound as if that's not the entire point of hi-polifying a ship.

Depends on where the detail is put..

Anyway, I uploaded the OrionV1 to hades Combine...

'Cuz it ain't, you know. Detail should bear some vague resemblence to the original.

Let me rephrase. How exactly is more detail supposed to be 'useful'?

To state the converse; why not just make a 6 sided box?

Generally speaking, the detail should be used to accentuate the ship. For instance, the communication pilons at the front. They should be there but functional, not just "cram as many spikes on as you can to up the poly count".

Similarly the armor plating on a ship. I don't think one needs to keep greebling a ship over and over. Granted there's more detail - but it needs to look like it's there for a reason. Don't create a 15000 poly ship if you can create something that looks that part with only half that number.

Or in the case of a fighter with a round nose... don't up the poly count to something rediculously huge to make it a perfect smooth shape when it looks perfectly find at a lesser number.

This is of course - my take on things. I'm certainly not judging any of the Orions that have been published so far. It's more my basic principal as far as creating high poly ships should go.

Made some minor fixes to the ship and replaced the file at HadesCombine.

I ditched the really bad engine texture and made a new one instead, as well as optimized Detail2 a little so it's slightly above 3000 polys now :D
I allso re-textured the lesser LODs and madea few POF fixes.

I had this posted in the other thread.

I kinda figured FS2 turrets are a few inches above the hull on a small rotating section, but given the size of the Huge Turret (bigger than Ursa) a few inches would go unnoticed....

But I'll think about that..

Looks good, although a little.. I dunno... busy. I think I'd have to see it in-game. Still, not bad work.

GE, I've got a question.  If I ever figure out a good way to do a blue-backgrounded girder box (I think I'm close now, but I haven't finished the implimentation), would you mind if I released a tweaked version?  There are a couple of (VERY) minor things I'd like to change, such as switching the direction of the runway blinkers to their canonical direction, as well as making my normal hex-hack check on all of its properties.

Hex-hack check?

Whoops, wrong thread.  The downside of two high-poly Orion threads going on at once.

Anyway, "Hex hack" refers to the raw data checking I do on any model that I get out of Max->POF.  To make sure the radius is set correctly, really.  There are a couple of other things I look at, but the Max_Radius is really the one thing that concerns me overall as it's been wrong on every single ship I've ever seen produced by that converter.  It's something that I'm actually looking at doing as a service for a number of mods, simply because it's annoying and trying to explain how to do it to anyone who doesn't already understand endianness and IEEE floating point format is an impossible task.  I did go ahead and fix this in the other thread, so that post before yours is effectively spam.

Make the comm array like Galemp's one (the antennas and such on the front) and it'd be perfect in my mind. (minus bump mapping and properly dirtying up the nameplates to match with Volition's)

I thought it allready has antennas? You would want more of them?

The one thing that kills it for me is pretty much the stupid-looking text on the side of it...bring back the original lettering style and look that was on the original Orion, please. this just looks weird, it doesn't look like a nameplate it looks like someone just typed text directly onto the ship which looks kinda silly

on a lighter note, at this rate, we will have so many different versions of a high poly Orion that FREDders will be able to have a different Orion design for every single Orion they put in their campaigns. Variety is good.

That's a simple fix really...just mke the Orion.pcx partialyl transparent and the metal pannel lines beneath it will slightly show trugh, thus looking like it was really painted on.
