Hehe, top of my console shopping list.

You can always trust Nintendo to give you quality games  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I don't know, I was kind of turned off the N64 when it was out because I was reading a few articles about how Nintendo only released its top coding tools to in-house developers and people with close relations like Namco and Rare - whereas Sony gave their PSX dev tools to everyone. However I admit I'm not to cluey on the console world - anyone care to confirm/deny/enlighten/fill me in on this?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

those may have more polys.. but they sure look rendered!  Most of the models in Freespace 2 don't have "I'm rendered" painted all over them

I think they look great! Just look at Links shirt. And btw Nintendo has always been a company that aimed for children/teenage customers. That's why they look rendered/cartoony.

Btw the ice climbers sure looks damn cute  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm not sure if thats true or not, but it would make sense. If you look at the games that are out for N64 you've got a few really really good ones, and then a whole bunch of mediocre ones. Thats why I never had any real interest in an N64 because their array of good titles was so lean. PS games seem to have a more uniform level of quality, and there are many many more good titles.
That picture is pretty sweet, but It doesn't look THAT much more impressive than the cutscenese from FFIX, and that was on the OLD platform. Just imagine what FFX is going to look like. Aki as a playable character anyone?

"doesn't look nearly as good"???
You download 3D marks2001 and launch the matrix-like test, and then you can come back and we'll talk.

Hmmm, I'm pretty well into the console world and as far as I'm concerned N64 has always had better overall content than PSX.

Nintendo's machine is cart based, which is expensive to create games for compared to PSX, this usually means that only large, successful (and usually highly talented) games companies are able to produce games for the N64. That coupled with Nintendos stringent quality control means that games are mostly good to exceptional quality (if not always very original).

Of course PSX has more than a few aces up it's proverbial sleeve (Silent Hill is still one of my favourite games for any platform and everyone should play MGS) but as far as I'm concerned Sony is well aware that if you give everyone the chance to create games then every now and again you'll get a gem. Consider that we only get 10% of what's been released in Japan is seen in America and Europe and we still see a helluva lot of games. It's the old "throw enough muck at the wall and eventually some will stick" mentality that's made Sonys machine sucessful. That and a voracious advertising campain (only cool people buy playstation remember?).

At the end of the day I see playstaion as a "cool accessory" whilst the N64 is a dedicated games machine.
It's worth noting the background of the two companies, Nintendo is and always has been a toy company, it's priorities are "fun value" and quality. Sony on the other hand is an electronics company that makes cool gadgets (walkman, discman etc.) and it's trying to sell an image.

Ummmm, I could go on for weeks on this subject so I'm going to shut up now  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
