Title: Problem with ST:R campaign - Models missing?
Post by: JSOC on July 31, 2011, 11:49:29 am
Hello!

I've just recently installed Freespace again after having not played it for several years. It feels great :).

Unfortunately I have a problem with the Silent Thread Reloaded Campaign. I downloaded all of the SCP contents with the Freespace Open Installer.
When launching ST:R with the launcher I get a message saying that this mod has generated 71 errors. I ignored this message hoping that everything
would turn out fine :).
I started the ST:R campaign and it's first mission. The problem is that somehow some of the ship models don't work. I can target them but I can not see
them. I can collide with them, they are shooting at me but my weapons have no effects on them. Some models are completely "invisible" (the only indication
that they are there is my target lock), others at least show their engines but nothing more.

How could I fix that?

Thank you very much!

A quick and dirty guess: you either don't have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs, you have them only partially or there is some setup issue that prevents them from being used. Whatever the cause, fs2_open.log will reveal it.

Thanks for your quick answer and sorry for not reading about the log file.

Here it is!

Yep, you don't have the 3.6.12 MediaVPs. There have been complaints recently that the Installer fails to download them. You can get them manually from the release thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0); just follow the instructions there, and they should end up in \freespace2\mediavps_3612\ , as intended.

Edit: and untick "Enable mipmapping" from the Launcher. It does more harm than good.

Ok, I downloaded mediavps_3612 and extracted it to FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612\.
However, that did not fix it. Do I somehow have to "activate" these mediavps files? Right now all I do is to select fsport-str as mod and launch the game.

I have attached the new fs2-open.log

Thanks!

The game engine will automatically use \mediavps_3612\ as a secondary mod folder (the mod.ini file inside \fsport-str\ will cause this).

But, according to your log, \freespace2\mediavps_3612\ is an active mod folder, but there is nothing usable inside it. Are there files like MV_Root.vp and MV_Assets.vp? Or could you provide a screenshot of \mediavps_3612\ ?

The mediavps_3612 folder contains only four files: "FSU-MVP.bmp", "mod.ini", "readme.txt" and "settings.ini". I was kind of surprised by the "mediavps-3612.zip" file as
it is only 33 Kilobytes large. But according to http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70736.0) that's all that's supposed to be in there

Quote
    MediaVPs_3612.zip
Required: Contains the mod.ini, FSU-MVP.bmp and Readme.txt and sets up the mod folder
Download Link: FSMods :: SectorGame Mirror
    MD5: C019C57629F352FF68B00C0A5478DCA5

Do I have to manually download the "MV_Root_3612.zip", "MV_Music_3612.zip", etc as well? I thought the FS Open Installer would do this job.

As I said, at the moment the Installer seems to have issues downloading the MediaVPs, and you just proved it, as you used it to download everything and didn't get the MediaVPs.

I suppose the naming on the instructions may be a bit misleading, but what we are after here is that you need the .zip you downloaded because it contains a pretty Launcher picture and a mod.ini so that the pretty picture can be shown in the Launcher. Next in order is MV_Root (and its patch), which is needed if you want to use the rest of the files. They contain table files and other small things.

You don't "need" the rest of the files in terms of a working setup, but you "need" them, if you want any graphical/audio improvements: high-quality music (MV_Music), hi-poly models and textures (MV_Assets and its patch), high-quality weapon effects etc (MV_Effects and its patch), higher-poly models and textures for high-end rigs like yours probably is (MV_Advanced), animated glowmaps (MV_AnimGlows), and ship icons for the radar (MV_RadarIcons).

Ok, I will download all of the contents listed in the  "RELEASE: 3.6.12 MediaVPs - 6th of August 2010 version" manually and then try it again.

Just to be sure: Do I have to extract the contents of the other zip files into the "\FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612\" folder or do I have to make an extra
folder for every zip file?
Sorry, I am a real newbie when it comes to setting up mods. Two days earlier I didn't even know that FS Open exists :).

I don't have the zips available, but I recall them being structured so that each contains a "mediavps_3612" directory, which in turn contains the .vp file itself. In short: everything into \freespace2\mediavps_3612\ .

Also, as a side note, you don't need to have any FS2 discs in your optical drive when playing FSO.

After manually installing the mediavps everything works perfectly now!

Thank you very much for your help Jeff Vader!
