Author Topic: Diaspora arcade mode?  (Read 3065 times)

Wouldn't that be cool? After the player finishes the campaign mode, there is basically nothing to do apart from replay missions. Having an arcade mode, eg Dogfight with highscores and such can be quite nice.

Sorry, this post has no real question apart from being a feature request.

The game does give you a score on each mission, which you can view by tabbing over from the debriefing!

You can also play multiplayer gauntlets alone.

There are also 3rd party missions you can download and play.

Having a skirmish mode is a frequently requested feature for the engine but the simple fact is that it's easier for a mission designer to build a mission that can do that, than for the code to be altered.

Kinda proves my point beautifully. Having the game make one of those in code would have taken an experienced coder days if not weeks or months of coding time.

Cant someone just use the multiplayer dogfight map and port it to singleplayer and then have a dedicated arcade mode?

Why even do that? You can just start a MP server on your own and play it solo.

Not if it's a dogfight-type game. Only coop can be played alone.
People are stupid, therefore anything popular is at best suspicious.

That would literally take about 1 minute in FRED.

Unless you want respawns, in which case you need serious coder time. :p

You can quite easily create arcade missions in FRED and use variables to handle the score. I've done this for an "arcade" challenge mission for Wings (would not be part of the campaign, but accessible from the tech room), complete with a letter rank a la Ace Combat to rate your performance. I based the score on number of kills, time taken, damage incurred, wingmen lost, and a couple other variables.

I don't have any experience in using FRED, and seeing as it will take
serious coder time. :p
, and it's probably written in C(++) or deep XML (I only know python I'm afraid), then I guess I won't be able to rewrite that mission... But if anyone else wants to then that's ok ;D

What? No, dude, it literally will take about 1 minute. FRED isn't written in any arcane coding language, it has a really easy to learn GUI.

You don't need to know the slightest bit of coding to make missions for FreeSpace.

No, Karajorma was talking about SP respawns.

Exactly. It's not possible to respawn in a SP game. There are ways to fake that but they require a lot of work from the FREDder. But if you want to port the mission to SP and play it like that, it's pretty easy.

Bear in mind though that Dain's mission isn't a dogfight, it's a co-op.

And definitely plays better with respawns and humans.
