Anyone had any success with "gamifying" real life?
Hey all!

So this is a thing: Apps that simulate real life as an RPG

And the example there is not the only one by a long ways. On the outset this looks VERY awesome to me as a productivity tool. Has anyone had a great deal of success/fun/enhanced productivity with these apps? Does it at least make your day more interesting if not MOAR productive? Does it make you feel like a slave to "leveling up" i.e., is it just another stress without streamlining life any?

I haven't used these in particular, but I've found some "gamey" features helpful in fitness apps and they've definitely been an effective motivator for the educational software my kids use.

Thanks!  :)

Like almost anyone, I struggle to overcome negative inertia to get things done, but I feel at my best with motivational self-talk. I feel like the idea of earning virtual "XP" and "lvling up!" even if it's without "in-game" payoff, could be a neat little trick.

Zombie run  was a good novel running app I dabbled with.  But it messed my routine up too much.    I believe there's a quite famous woman who draws wangs using her route on a running app.

Also I did the Google capture and hold thing I forget the name of on lunch breaks when I was a court officer.
Campaigns I've added my distinctiveness to-

-Battle of Neptune
-Between the Ashes 2
-Blue planet: Age of Aquarius
-FOTG?
-Inferno R1
-Ribos: The aftermath / -Retreat from Deneb
-Sol: A History
-TBP EACW teaser
-Earth Brakiri war
-TBP Fortune Hunters (I think?)
-TBP Relic
-Trancsend (Possibly?)
-Uncharted Territory
-Vassagos Dirge
-War Machine
(Others lost to the mists of time and no discernible audit trail)

Well, I'm going to give the general idea a try - see if an RPG type app helps me to get motivated for daily tasks - school, house chores, admin and the like.  :)

The only type of regular "exercise" I ever engaged in was using Wii Fit (yes, yes, I know), so I can definitely see the appeal.

  I hear where you're coming from and each ton their own.  I'm an army brat and have been running since I was 13 along with all the military physical stuff from 17 so I guess it's more lifestyle.   I'd swap a good chunk of it for more 3d studio max skills and a job in turumbars  industry though.

Army experience is good, thanks for your service.

In my case I'm an elder sibling in a family of MANY with special needs siblings all around. Lots of caretaking so I usually can't find time to go gymning/working/studying.  :p

Re: Anyone had any success with "gamifying" real life?
Honestly, the gym/workout bit for fitness isn't the be-all-end-all.  I used to be very fit, and lapsed with a job that has me behind a desk more and more (trouble with more responsibility is less field work), having young kids, and living in a different part of the country where the activities I once did are a bit harder to access.  That said, I hit a milestone I was absolutely not going to accept and decided to do something about this.  Never been a bad eater (not much junk food in my diet), but portion size and particularly relative portion size has been an issue - I love bread and cheese.  Since tinkering with my diet and portions (with the help of the Weight watchers app, which is seriously great), I'm down 25 pounds in less than two months and going for quite a bit more.  And it feels great.

TL;DR - don't let "working out" be a barrier.

Also, I find the WW App and my FitBit to be good "external monitors" to remind me to (1) not snack and (2) get off my ass.
"In the beginning, the Universe was created.  This made a lot of people very angry and has widely been regarded as a bad move."  [Douglas Adams]

I haven't tried the RPG-like apps, but I've noticed that going through a clear and achievable to do list in real life is almost as enjoyable as questing in an RPG - might be something to consider :) If you like to keep lists of stuff to do and enjoy organising things then there's an amazing book called "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" by David Allen. It's got almost zero coaching bull**** and is very straight to the point. Did a quick google and I can see that this page https://hamberg.no/gtd/ has it summed up pretty nicely, if you're interested.

I can confirm that my life is pretty great.  It has enough games though so I am not in a hurry to make other parts of my life more gamey, since i work on games at work, then go home and play more games.

Thanks Mpez! I actually have read most of that book. :) Some of it was useful to me for sure. But I've found that having my "to-do list" in the form of this RPG app has actually been a real blast over the past couple of days, whereas it was more often than not just intimidating before.

@MP-Ryan

I feel your pain bud, I've got a 15 month old son and baby number 2 due to drop in 6 weeks.  Spent two years+ working behind a desk with a minor non desk component at a court.   I swear I could feel my belt shrink some days.    New consultant job is majorly field based so all good.  Less fit = more risk.
