Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
I like the first one the best too, in my opinion it doewsnt matter if they get blocked, it's shivan, it should looks strange and unnatural.
actualy, mabye not.

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
I was a bit scared (the bad way) by the model at first. But the never versions with textures look fine enought to me to not freak out. The thing that does bother me is that it doesn't look like a cargo hauler, it looks like a thing that tears cargo to pieces! The thing looks like the harvester ship from Elite Force. I do agree that those claws look nice, but not when there is a poor helpless cargo container in there! So I would like something a bit more subtle "claw" things.

I just thought that why not make somekind of extension in to the nose. So that the crew can access the container should they wish.
What do you think? Leave the eyes and stuff off, and just put a door in there?

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
It's Shivan. Shivans don't need to do things that make sense. A door sounds a little out of character if you ask me.

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
I just thought it was practical. Being able to access the container could come in handy in many occasions. But the truth is that we don't know how the shivan world functions, and so do not know what would make sense for the shivans. They could have need for large personnel transports or luxury liners (  ;7 ) for all we know. But we have only seen an invasion army so we have no idea.
Since there was some discussion about the nose I presented a logical idea that came in to human mind. And to me, a door doesn't sound that out of character, but then it comes to personal prefrence. What we really need, is a Shivan to ask opinion from.

EDIT: But if the door is out of the question, I think the circle with three "eyes" looks best to me...

If Shivans don't have doors, then what DO they use to get in and out of their ships? :p Gelatanous membranes?

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
My problem isn't really with the door itself, but Shivan ships aren't generally built for functionality. I meant that having a door in a place where we might think it would be useful seems like something very un-Shivan to me.

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
Ofcourse shivan sips have doors. How else would they dock with the iceni, what are you seeing in hallfight, what are the things on the bottom of the azreil.

Er, I'm not saying they don't have doors. I'm saying having a door in that particular place seems more like human thinking than Shivan.

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
If the door would be in the other side of the ship, it wouldn't not be very useful for entering the container. Yes? It doesn't matter how they think. But if they want to enter the container from the ship, they need a door right there.

Perhaps they scanned terran and vasudan ships during the first Great War and detected our door and bulckheads. "That's a good idea to have doors where they actually are useful!" - Thus the Dis was designed...  :p

In most cases, if you have a cargo carrier that carries cargo outside the hull of the ship, the cargo is not meant to be accessed while in transit.

True..but as for the Shivans, "most cases" do not apply, at least not very often.

Admittedly, there is a lot of Shivan behavior that seems...pointless...to a human or Vasudan.

In most cases that's true. But imagine if Triton could be hauling a container fitted with research/sensor/techno gimmick equipment (would be cheaper than Faustus, I think), or imagine a container equipped with half a dozen AA turrets (cheaper than a Fenris flying escort, I think). Or a container full of medical equipment, a welcome help in any evacuation. Or the container could be full of animals being transferred from one zoo to another. Now who's gonna feed those poor creatures if there is no door?

These examples were only for human transport. But I'd imagine Shivans might come up with sufficently evil uses for a door, that "would fit their character"  :drevil:

Re: The ugliest ship in Freespace...
Not feed the zoo animals but just kick them, maybe pick up a penguin? feed it to a lion? Then kick the lion.

Hobbel the lion then put the penguin just out of reach of it so it can never quite catch the penguin?

File off the Rhino's horn? Let the monkey's climb the giraffe and then randomly leave them floating in the path of an oncoming supernova just for kicks?

That Shivan enough?

But yeah, I like the door idea.

I IM'd StratComm and he's hopefully going to fix the radii before these go into the media VPs. No screenies 'cause they look just like the latest images.

Yeah I'll be getting a radius fix in for this one (not so important for the container but I'll do it anyway) so consider that link a temporary release.  I'll try to get the fix done tomorrow sometime.

Great job (as usual)
I'm particulary impressed with the "Eye" Gonfiguration. For a mere freighter, that thing looks very evil....
