Title: A Reminder
Post by: Goober5000 on August 19, 2006, 10:38:57 pm
Some of you may have noticed that Colonol Dekker has been banned.  He posted a series of disgusting images in the "Post your pic" thread yesterday.  The less said, the better.  Suffice it to say that it was a flagrant and unapologetic violation of the forum rules, and has been dealt with accordingly.  He has been issued a permanent, universal ban, and is no longer welcome at Hard Light Productions.

While we try to provide a free (in both senses of the word) and open forum for discussion here, we have rules that must be followed.  For the most part, they are common-law rules and are not written down, but we have tried to establish guidelines to let people know what we expect of them.  These guidelines have been posted in a sticky thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,37583.0.html) for several months now and can be viewed at any time.  We have room for a wide variety of behaviors and opinions here, and all we ask is that you use a little common sense.

Hopefully, Colonol Dekker will serve as an example so that these kinds of bannings can be minimized.  We have not had to ban someone for pornography or shock images for several months now, but if the line is crossed, the rules will be enforced.

This thread will remain open for discussion of the circumstances surrounding the banning or of the rules themselves.  If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to post.

I suppose giving those not present at the time a vague idea of what Dekker posted would be out of the question?

Again, the less said, the better.  However...
Spoiler:
He posted four images: the goatse image, something with maggots crawling out of a body part, a gay threesome, and someone squirting diarrhea into their own face.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't try looking it up.

Okaaaay, I totally understand the 'less said the better'. I'm now somewhat wishing I hadn't asked... urgh.

Something always struck me as a bit.... odd about him. Granted, I made the FS-number-that-comes-after-2 thread, but come on. Posting goatse and tubgirl on one of the best forums around? I mean, what did he think would happen? Oh well, I won't miss him.

wow. that sucks, but I guess he wasn't thinking straight. Anyway, he was mostly an interesting guy, so again, too bad. But we really don't need tubgirl and goatse, it's gross.

To be honest, I always thought he'd do something like this sometime. I've seen others like him (and much much worse) on threads of less effecient MODing. Can you believe the only rules on this one forum are: no posting redundant threads? Man, that was a horrible time when I thought all forums were like that.

Well, other forums suffer from more abuse too. Like, www.neowin.net for example, with 200,000 members, all 12 to 15 year old geeky males interested in beta's of vista and such, and you really have to have like a team of 50 mods on a site like that. Hard light is nice and chill which is nice and there's no unpleasant admins or mods here, everyone is cool.

Heh, the guy did seem to be a little crazy in general. He actually used to be a normal person in the VBB days, as far as I can remember.

Why was Nuke monkeyed, by the way? (although it evidently didn't have any effect)

Because he went on a drunk posting spree apparently.

I don't like Nuke's musical taste, but he sure has some amazing models, it's too bad no one has used them in a campaign yet...

That'll change..... ;)

Now now guys, this is a heads up on why he was banned. It's not to ***** about him now that he is banned. It's a shame he had to do what he did but we can't overlook it - the rules are there for all to see on the matter.

On the subject of Nuke: I was the one who monkeyed him and it was indeed because he was spamming whilst apparently drunk. I know people get drunk and sometimes come along and post from time to time - and it can be funny - but there's no call for spamming and being drunk is no excuse. He'll be unmonkeyed soon enough and hopefully will have sobered up :)

I honestly don't know how you manage to say **** like that without laughing....

It's a shame, I rather liked CD but his actions here were inexcusable, I saw the post and was really repulsed by it, I expected better from him. This banning was justified although I will miss his sense of humour!

I thought they block his IP Adress.... Or something?
Title: Re: A Reminder

AFAIK that is how banning works, although there are some ways around it.

Nein, banning simply blocks the user from logging in afaik. To IP ban someone is pretty pointless these days too - since most DSL providers use DHCP.

Colonel Dekker was a true patriot, a knight of the Internet. All heil Goatse etc.

I once posted porn here. It wasn't a really good idea. Now I don't post at all. Even this post is a lie.

Title: Re: A Reminder
Post by: an0n on August 21, 2006, 08:45:47 pm
I think we should start a betting pool on when he'll be back.

Aside from the idea of them letting Goober anywhere near anything relating to banning after the whole 'Circle Jerkin' fiasco being completely ****ing hilarious - there's the smaller matter of Stryke being the only person they ever banned with any degree of permenancy. And that was only because he purposely got banned and had already decided to leave.

I mean, **** I've been perma-banned like 5 times. The Circle Jerkin' one lasted the longest at a whole 8-months, but to get that I had to call an admin a fag, mirror the contents of the Staff forum onto Penguinbomb after Goober ****ed-up my ban and gave me access to everything, register about a million alt-nicks, spam the hidden/inactive forums to get the alt's post-counts into the hundreds, then run around starting fights and religion-vs-science debates. And I seem to recall abusing the LVLSHOT tag in my sig - thus appending to every single post I'd ever made on HLP, a 640x480 copy of Goatse.

And you still ****ing let me back.

And you did much the same thing with heretic IIRC, just before the Great Admin War at Warpstorm - when he decided he didn't care anymore and Goatse'd about 70 threads.

It is a well known secret that the HLP BanHammer +3 has a crack on it (too many thick headed troublemakers). Presently there are no way to reforge it and the powers of the BanHammer keep draining. Sacred texts from ages old have vague refrences to "Ancients", but so far they have been unable to find the right Ancients with powers to repair it.. After racing around different galaxies Fury was "volunteered" to try the Ori. But even they were baffeled by the mystic powers of the BanHammer (they did try to steal it though, fortunatley Fury had his Starfury to escape with). Shivans ate the lunch of the brave HLP zealot who tried to sneak past them to find the Ancients. Being so old friend to the community, it was deemed to be a good idea to kill IceFire and send him to the cafeteria. But as expected, the Ancients didn't care. Ice did however meet Daniel and together they proceeded to whine to the Ancinets about them "not caring". Many of the HLP crusaders went beyond the galactic rim but few have returned, and fewer even met any of the Firstones.

As long as the HLP BanHammer is replaced or repaired, banning action continiues to be erratic and unpredictable.

There has been research in to aquiring following BanTools:
Shivan BanBeam of piercing - Pierces the target and bans the HLP troll behind it.
Liir BanBomb of Flickering - Equipped with flicker drive and has a chance of passing trought the target and hitting the HLP creep behind it.
BanShotgun of the Lord Valmet - Sturdy double barreled shotgun capable of banning an entire flock of HLP wussys at once.
Drow Jinxed BanDagger of Accident - Will cut an ear from the target and slip in to the hearth of the moderator, banning him instead.

There is also been efforts to find the legendary Ban weapon of VW. But the now abandoned Volition Watch katacombs are dangerous and much of the information concerning the Banning rituals of the mysterious people have been lost.

(Yes. I just had a borign moment in school.)  :o

Best. Post. Ever.

As for an0n's debanning, well, let's address this from the other direction: perma-bans around here are more like "open-ended/indefinite" bans, with no guarantee of when the person will be let back in, if ever. We're an overly forgiving bunch, in case you hadn't noticed. ;)

Karajorma and I (and IIRC one or two others) independently discovered what had actually happened.  The short version is that Colonol Dekker was framed. :p

He's been unbanned.  I'll post a new thread once the admins agree on a policy for handling this sort of thing in the future.
