Rather than unburying the 18-month-stale thread, how about a new place to drop videos you found interesting that aren't music?
I'll start:
-
drop videos nukes
Kurzgesagt's videos on nukes are very good. They got so popular that the Red Cross at some point asked to make another one.
-
That's a great channel, but when it comes to pure Science I normally switch to something else. Take a look at how the subject of strange matter and strange stars has been analyzed, and with notable differences I may add, by Kurzgesagt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_8yK2kmxoo) and Space Time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4RNGRyzt10).
-
Captain disillusion, one of my favourites... Just slow to upload, that's the price of quality content from a one man band.
-
Watched Drachinifel's video on the sinking of HMS Hood last night. He goes into great detail about possible causes of the fatal explosion and why some of the popular theories (including plunging fire) are probably not the culprit. Good stuff, if you're into naval history.

I've seen a few Spacetime videos and I was very impressed by the level of depth they were able to communicate. I'm so used to pop science videos just being dumbed down summaries of Wikipedia articles but I learned some very novel ideas from that channel.

I agree, PBS Space Time is great at that.
TREY the Explainer has some good Archeology and Paleontology content:

"You buy a Large Multi-cannon, a Medium Multi-Cannon, a Medium Multi-Cannon, a Medium Multi-Cannon, a Medium Multi-Cannon, a Small Multi-Cannon, and a Small Multi-Cannon."
-
this is real good
-
A very good look at a difficult subject.
-
In these dark times, can I interest you in a joke?
-
This YouTuber loves military details.
-
I got sent one of those about protecting your shopping trolley from IED's or something....
I didn't watch it 😂

This one?
"Let’s begin by upgrading the armament. We will begin by mounting a 12.7mm M2HB Browning heavy machine gun, plus another for anti-aircraft purposes against aerial attacks, and a few more if you live in Birmingham."
-
That one yeah 😂😂
-
Shameless double post
-
I do appreciate a good restoration
-
Could be a podcast. ;)
-
This showed up in my recommended, no idea why.
Can't say I'm dissatisfied tho.
-
No moth is cute. Ewwww.gif
-
Moths are simply butterflies in their work clothes. So unless you are also anti-butterfly......
But yeah, it's all fun and games having a live animal on your hand, but it can rapidly go wrong.
-
They're the devil's butterflies. If it means butterflies have to go, I'll pay that price gladly 😂
-
Dekker, will this convince you otherwise? :drevil:
-
Nope.
Some people are TOO comfy with handling them 😂😭

Both are great channels. PBS Space Time is more in-depth (and easier to pronounce) but Kurzgesagt has cartoon ducks, which is always a bonus
-
(video titled: guy eats pregnant moth)
,
yeah, I'm not watching that.
Also human stupidity doesn't help your argument that moths are "yukky".
Whatever, subjective is as subjective does.
just respect the fact that they are pollinators ok?

Annyway, before this gets ugly, here, have some synapsids:

Searched for "stutter loop" the other day; this seemed most relevant to what I was looking for.
Beware of unexpected flashing lights and volume spikes.

That's trippy.
/me has seizure.

Thanks, I hate it

Any particular video you'd recommend (that doesn't sound like an alien conspiracy theory)?

I'm quite sure that's the joke :P
-
I've gone hard into this channel recently. He does concise but informative videos on disasters and other odd historical events, with a particular focus on nuclear incidents. He did something of a prequel to Chernobyl, which is obviously going to need its own series.
-
Speaking of Chernobyl, Kyle Hill did a pretty neat, short documentary about the "Elephant's Foot" pile of radioactive slag from that reactor:
-
I love this channels style.
And this is how you can do it 👍
-
I love this channels style.
I think in the last like 2 weeks I started seeing them everywhere. Good stuff!

This scratches my child of 82 itch.
Tempted to get the set and display them on my cars parcel shelf.

This was pointed out to me mere minutes ago. In some ways superior to the cult 90's film, in some ways not so superior..... But mostly superior.

With Noita discounted on GOG.com (again), I went to search for a video on YouTube that's not by FuryForged, and found this gem:
-
Did you know that Joel Haver, of those VHS cartoon lookin' vids, also does amazing live-action sketches like this?
-
I did. And I'm an avid fan.

I've made a note to check this out.

Hot stuff.

This is my kind of shop.
I apologize for not watching these immediately. I just stumbled across one of them somewhere else and it was surreal.
Also (unrelated):
-
's a good video.

Incidentally, this inspired me to write this: https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=97527.msg1909293#msg1909293

Watching this again while crawling through Dan Wentz's YouTube channel (after seeing his latest post):
If you're logged in to YouTube, you might find a bit of irony attempting to save the video to your Favourites list. :drevil:
-
This is a really cool animation and it's one of my Favorites.
And this is pretty cool as well.
-
So the excellent retro-tech specialist LGR decided to purchase an actual license key for WinRAR.
In 2021.
Because he could.
And he also ordered a physical CD copy, because come on why would you not.
And now the saga continues, because after he made the video the fine WinRAR people sent him a bonus package. Wonders never cease.

I'd heard a lot of this stuff in the past, but it's good to have it all in one place so I can point people at it.

I confer the social property of good video
-
wait, you didn't know that already?
Oh look it's the same subject, but much better explained and with some additional cases, ultimately going into why people do lawsuits they way they do It's unpaid medical bills.
Legal Eagle is very cool. Also, err, minor content warning for pictures of showing what it looks like when 190F coffee literally melts your skin.
He also has a longform video about Britney Spear's conservatorship.
-
Great channel!
-
Yeah. I've been watching Legal Eagle for ages but the episode that made me happiest was when he did a short answering a question from Ann Reardon's channel. I'm a huge fan of her debunking videos. Especially whenever she gets her long-suffering husband to try stuff.
-
Ooh that's very good.
-
Really cool video from Scott Manley about the Apollo 11 lunar ascent stage Eagle. Later Apollo missions intentionally crashed their ascent stages into the lunar surface to generate impacts that could be measured by the seismometers placed there, but 11's was allowed to float free. Because the Moon's gravitational field is "lumpy," it's hard to get a stable orbit around it, and without active control many orbits get more and more eccentric until they impact the surface. Because of that, it was generally assumed that 11's ascent stage most likely crashed into the lunar surface at some point over the past 50 years. So someone tried working out a possible impact site using NASA-developed orbital simulation software, and they found that reports of its demise may have been somewhat exaggerated:

It's pure cheese but the fighter combat is sublime.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Philosophytube.
It's a quite good philosophytube video about... how we look at ourselves! And about how we are made to look at ourselves.

Tbh I think that's going to be one of the points of the movie :P

Some of these TV pundits are so weird.
-
Good video! Kinda scary though
-
I've been binging videos lately
EDIT: This wasn't age restricted when I posted it here for sure. It's an innuendo studios video about "The Gandhi Trap", specifically about protests and how we talk about them being "non-violent". One of the salient points it makes is that Gandhi's protests, famously considered non-violent, aren't non-violent. Yes, the protestors did not start violence, but the authorities definitely did a lot of violence to them.
-
Kurzgesagt at it again
-
Yes.
-
I love that bridge.
-
It horrifies my civil engineer brother which greatly amuses me.
-
Three Arrows is at it again! (Please also check out his excellent podcast, "The Iron Dice", which goes into detail about Germany during the Interbellum.

:D

That's hilarious!

A short lesson in how you can use a viral video to distract from years of mismanagement.

Watching a classic.
-
Abigail Thorn moving away from the teacher and into the researcher.
-
So I would post Hbomberguy's critique of Deus Ex Human Revolution here but it's three hours, thirty-three minutes and thirty-three seconds long, which is way to ****ing long for my tastes (even though I did watch it in one sitting, err)...
Instead I have a podcast for y'all! Behind the Bastards, a podcast that looks into ... bastards, like Tsar Nicholas II, Hitler and Stalin, but also some lesser known people like King Norodom Sihanouk (the king of Cambodia before Pol Pot took over). It's, in short, a history podcast, and I find it very interesting because it either dives into lesser known people or lesser known aspects of well known people.
The currently running series is highly interesting becuase it focuses on protestant christianity in America, and why and how a lot of it got corrupted by the very people that Jesus Christ opposed. (https://pca.st/lbj1zz6m) It's something I've been wondering about for a very long time.
-
HBomb and Robert Evans are two of my favorite creators on the internet. You ever listen to Secretly Incredibly Fascinating? It's by Alex Schmidt, one of Robert's old coworkers and he guests sometimes there.
-
I have not! I'll add it to my subscriptions :-)
-
Never heard of this youtuber before but she's been doing the rounds.
-
Okay so a day ago Mito posted this on discord:
As a guy living in the Netherlands it's very interesting to see how a Canadian views our cities. I wasn't aware that some of the most dire roads I've seen are just... standard in North America.
Meanwhile in the more grim aspects of things, LegalEagle neatly explains that US police forces do not have a duty to protect (whilst medical emergency personel does). It's one hell of a combination with qualified immunity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl6yXjdMlHI).
-
Big fan of Not Just Bikes, it's a great channel for urban planning in general. Sadly Australia is blighted by the stroads scourge as well, and suburbs were a mistake.
-
His channel keeps popping up in my recommendations, and as someone who's spent pretty much his whole life in suburban hell, it's incredibly eye-opening.
-
I'd like to second (fourth?) the recommendation for Not Just Bikes. Every one of those videos just makes me sad to live here in California.
Also: Sophie and Legal Eagle are also great
-
In which PhilosophyTube talks about HOW THE RULE OF LAW IS UNDER THREAT.

Anybody play Elden Ring? Statistically, that seems pretty likely, actually. Well here's a funny animated Elden Ring video:
-
I wasn't aware of
1) how awful the sheer agression in the anglosphere towards cyclists is today
and 2) how it is a very recent phenonemon.
What the **** is wrong with people that ****ing bicycles are now part of a "culture war".
-
I'll admit to being guilty of that on occasion. I live in part of suburbia that has a lot of narrower two-lane roads where bike lanes aren't remotely a thing, so on the rare occasions when I encounter bike riders on the road, it's usually in the sense of being inconvenienced by them and having to figure out a way around them. It's not really the rider's fault in those cases, but it doesn't make it any less personally annoying. Fair or not, I think it becomes easier from a cognitive sense to lump all cyclists together because there aren't that many of them on the roads around here, whereas everyone drives cars, so they become that "different group" that humans are so good at singling out, and their traffic infractions stick out in your brain more. Like, I still remember getting physically hit by a (fortunately slow-moving) bike in college which failed to yield a clearly-marked crosswalk to me when I was on foot, and that probably colors my thinking on bikes to this day. It's definitely not a fair way to think, but it still happens.
