AFAIK that is how banning works, although there are some ways around it.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Nein, banning simply blocks the user from logging in afaik. To IP ban someone is pretty pointless these days too - since most DSL providers use DHCP.

I think we should start a betting pool on when he'll be back.

Aside from the idea of them letting Goober anywhere near anything relating to banning after the whole 'Circle Jerkin' fiasco being completely ****ing hilarious - there's the smaller matter of Stryke being the only person they ever banned with any degree of permenancy. And that was only because he purposely got banned and had already decided to leave.

I mean, **** I've been perma-banned like 5 times. The Circle Jerkin' one lasted the longest at a whole 8-months, but to get that I had to call an admin a fag, mirror the contents of the Staff forum onto Penguinbomb after Goober ****ed-up my ban and gave me access to everything, register about a million alt-nicks, spam the hidden/inactive forums to get the alt's post-counts into the hundreds, then run around starting fights and religion-vs-science debates. And I seem to recall abusing the LVLSHOT tag in my sig - thus appending to every single post I'd ever made on HLP, a 640x480 copy of Goatse.

And you still ****ing let me back.

And you did much the same thing with heretic IIRC, just before the Great Admin War at Warpstorm - when he decided he didn't care anymore and Goatse'd about 70 threads.

It is a well known secret that the HLP BanHammer +3 has a crack on it (too many thick headed troublemakers). Presently there are no way to reforge it and the powers of the BanHammer keep draining. Sacred texts from ages old have vague refrences to "Ancients", but so far they have been unable to find the right Ancients with powers to repair it.. After racing around different galaxies Fury was "volunteered" to try the Ori. But even they were baffeled by the mystic powers of the BanHammer (they did try to steal it though, fortunatley Fury had his Starfury to escape with). Shivans ate the lunch of the brave HLP zealot who tried to sneak past them to find the Ancients. Being so old friend to the community, it was deemed to be a good idea to kill IceFire and send him to the cafeteria. But as expected, the Ancients didn't care. Ice did however meet Daniel and together they proceeded to whine to the Ancinets about them "not caring". Many of the HLP crusaders went beyond the galactic rim but few have returned, and fewer even met any of the Firstones.

As long as the HLP BanHammer is replaced or repaired, banning action continiues to be erratic and unpredictable.

There has been research in to aquiring following BanTools:
Shivan BanBeam of piercing - Pierces the target and bans the HLP troll behind it.
Liir BanBomb of Flickering - Equipped with flicker drive and has a chance of passing trought the target and hitting the HLP creep behind it.
BanShotgun of the Lord Valmet - Sturdy double barreled shotgun capable of banning an entire flock of HLP wussys at once.
Drow Jinxed BanDagger of Accident - Will cut an ear from the target and slip in to the hearth of the moderator, banning him instead.

There is also been efforts to find the legendary Ban weapon of VW. But the now abandoned Volition Watch katacombs are dangerous and much of the information concerning the Banning rituals of the mysterious people have been lost.

Best. Post. Ever.

As for an0n's debanning, well, let's address this from the other direction: perma-bans around here are more like "open-ended/indefinite" bans, with no guarantee of when the person will be let back in, if ever. We're an overly forgiving bunch, in case you hadn't noticed. ;)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
