With any luck, we can finally commence moving to a new server later today. The server in question is the same that is currently hosting Game Warden. http://www.game-warden.com
Downtime, if everything goes smoothly will be approximately 2 days and HLP will be back in business on Sunday. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
-
...prepare for the worst.
Life without HLP?
-
I have complete confidence in the Hard Light administration that it will be back up by monday, if not then by the time i return.
-
Life without HLP?
Don't worry, we're capable of destruction on a far greater scale than that. We can destroy HLP and create a new community of disgruntled ex-hosted staff members!
Umm... :nervous:
-
That would be both scary innovative and purplexing all at the same time.
-
A weekend without HLP! WAAAAAAA!
Wait, I don't come here at the weekends! ;)
-
So now when the server dies it takes down two of our hubs.
-
All the better, maybe people actually get something done during that downtime. :p
In reality, it wouldn't be either of our choice if we could afford it.

My... My God! It's worse than I could ever have imagined!! *Jumps out nearest window*

Understood.
Hmm, methinks I should go download some of the pages off the wiki later. Might need to refer to them if I'm playing with my tables during the downtime... :)
-
The move is now complete, everything seems to work. Don't hesitate to inform the admins if you see something not functioning as they did before Friday. Now we just need to wait for DNS to update and point to this new server.
-
A day ahead of schedule, nice :) Everything seems to work and is pretty responsive, tried the wiki, main page and the private scp forums and it's behaving as it's supposed to. And unlike the last server move, this time I can't see any private forums that I'm not supposed to see. Good job
-
Yeah, MAJOR kudos to Fury for this undertaking. He's amazing.
-
This seems to have been painless.

This seems to have been painless.
You know, that's like saying 'Looks like we're going to make it without incident....' ;)
-
Now that we've moved, how about we get lvlshot working hmmm? :p
-
Well, one problem. Minor one. The 'last post' for each forum on the index page also shows posts from private forums I don't have access to.
Currently I can see post titles from the WSC, MG, MT, BWO, TBP and TAP private forums. The posts are still inaccessible though, and the nested forums don't actually show up if I go to the relevant forum. So not a big deal... as long as noone puts anything secret in a post title, at least, as that would show up for everyone.

For some reason this seems to pop up every now and then and then disappears as suddenly as it appeared. It's a small bug in SMF somewhere, or could be a side effect of using older RC2 templates.
-
It was also that way before the server move, I'm pretty sure I saw a few one and were not allowed to view them.
Congrats to the quick move guys, I found no bigger problems so far (it's a little slower than before, but not so much that it would disturb)

I wouldn't exactly call that a problem. I mean, would you deny the benefits of being able to see such interesting topic titles as "Instances of rape among oranges"?
Exemplary work as always, lads. Although I really can't put my finger on exactly what they are, the small changes here and there really make the whole place a lot smoother and user-friendly.
-
I missed the takedown notice for this weekend...Suffice to say I got a BIG shock when tried to log on. My first thought was something along the lines of "OH GOD, HLP IS DEAD!!!"
I look forward to checking out the site on its new server. It really does seem like the whole thing went off without a hitch. 'Grats Fury. :D
-
Things are looking smooth on this end. Oh, and thanks for putting a link to the IP address on the temp page; it's easier than copy/pasting the address every time. :p
-
another problem: some of the links beginning with http://www.hard-light.net..... can't be opened. I tried to substitute "hard-light.net" with "64.92.160.252", but worked only in one or two occasions.
-
Just wait until hard-light.net points to the new server.
-
Like now.
-
ok, problem solved. good work!
-
After login, it still redirects to the I.P.
-
Yeah, we were leaving the forums configured to point to the IP for a bit until the DNS propagated sufficiently, which I think it has. I've switched it back over now.
-
The only problem I see is the html in Sandwich's user title, but that may be on purpose/not related to server move.
-
Yeah, I need to fix that; it's not related to the move though.

I've heard from some people that the DNS hasn't propagated where they are yet, so I've switched the forums back to using the IP for now.
-
That just causes more problems. :p I'm logged in at hard-light but all the links use the IP, so I get logged out if I click them. Also, the QUOTE button doesn't seem to work.

works for me.^

Also works for me. ;) Cheers Fury.

Just bear with it another 12 hours or so.
Also, the QUOTE button doesn't seem to work.
Quite likely browser cache/cookie issue. :p
-
DNS has propogated for me.
I'd post instructions for how to edit a hosts file and go ahead and flip it to the domain.
-
I'd post instructions for how to edit a hosts file
Go right ahead. :D
-
Only 3 hours to go before I change everything to use hard-light.net instead of IP anyway.
-
Seems to have transitioned smoothly over here.
-
Okay, links and quotes are working again.
-
For some odd reason when I try to access the site via the hard-light.net name, I keep getting timeouts.
Edited my hosts file as a temporary measure to directly access the IP. Still getting (very) slow load times, but at least I can connect.
edit: shoot, it still don't work. I have to manually change the address to reflect the IP in the Address space...
edit2: Posting stuff also results in bad timeouts...
-
Probably DNS issue, old IP is cached somewhere between your browser and the server. Some software firewalls have DNS caching features for example, or it could be that updated DNS simply has not reached your ISP yet.
-
What HLP moved?
Hah, I picked up a great weekend to fiddle my new PC into a working state :D
-
On Windows, Start, Execute... , type
ipconfig /flushdns
This will clear your local DNS cache

We need to test automatic backup of HLP MySQL databases. When a database is being backed up, it is locked to prevent writes. All but forums database is done in seconds, but forums may need up to 15 minutes to complete. When forums database is locked, forums won't load. We apologize for inconvenience.
The reason why we need to test backups, is to make sure that current MySQL setup is able to properly export as large tables as 700MB without problems and tweak settings if needed.
-
Backing up large databases still doesn't go smoothly, meaning further tweaking of MySQL settings is necessary. We'll retry backup test at later time.
