Huh, so the mystery continues.  Whoever's there sure picked a cool spot to set up, though.

I was the first guy to find it and set up shop there, but apparently someone else got there too.

Obsidian hut, greenhouse... was there a small wheat farm near it too? If so, that'd be mine. It's so annoying that I haven't been able to connect to the server since the IP change, otherwise I'd have done more expansion, but yeah... that's where I live.

copycat? no. I'm just doing a wall that actually looks decent and isnt a crappy "pour lava and water, pretend its a wall" thing.

in short. if you're not gonna do it properly, dont bother. size aint all that important, unless yer overcompensating for something. Oh wait. Nevermind.

Have you double-checked the latest info lately? The server moved a couple of times, and I missed the IP change for a few days myself and thought there was a real problem when in fact I had just been trying to connect to the old IP. What error are you getting?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. One of two scenarios occur: either I can't connect at all and I get an internal socket exception/time out error thing, or I connect and spawn... with no terrain. I fall down eternally into the void, surrounded by the weird things in the air down at that level... and then I time out. It's so annoying! So yeah, I'm sure I've got the IP right, just... weird things happening.

Pred, in your honest opinion, how many square feet/blocks should a castle cover in area?

In my opinion, whatever size you're comfortable with. I originally planned something much larger than what I have on the server, but even that was very  time consuming. Mostly because I gathered many of the blocks by myself.
It all comes down to how much time you're willing to put in to your project. If you want to, you can always expand later, or start a new project that's bigger. That's the beauty of Minecraft.

I'm keepin my 30x30. I'm about to post more screenies once I convert the 1st floor to smoothstone.

EDIT: Building it isn't the hard part. Finding a good place to put it is the medium part. Getting the moat to work is hard as hell.

If you want to make a deep moat finish one that's already one deep and then dig down. I had trouble with water physics for my moat, too. Very finicky.

I decided that I didn't want to deal with the moat building part, so I found a very large pond and then started building in the middle of it. (Very large pond does not necessarily = lake. It was only 1 block deep.) It worked pretty good at first, but then somehow it got screwed up. Water flow was totally ****ed but only on one side. Caused much butthurt.

Anyway, here's the progress I have made on the outside

I left the center stripe grass because I intend to replace it with red carpet (red wool). It would be a pain in the ass to dig up the dirt then replace it with smooth stone then mine it up and then replace it with red wool. So for now, it is the fairway.

Those towers are far from finished.

I haven't thought much about the interior. All I know is that I want a red carpet and a double staircase leading up to the second floor. I'm not an architect, so I have no idea how I should lay out the rooms. I also don't know how I should space the windows and how big to make them. I would kind of like some suggestions from you guys on those two things.

Um... other details about my castle: When I complete the towers, I would like for each one to have a crown top. I discovered that if you place stairs just right, you might can accomplish this. I would also like to have a taller central tower. With a pointy top.

They look the same..same "striped" design, different blocks (cobble vs. then unexisting stone bricks).
And putting it by hand or using a lava+water mechanic...no difference.

there's a difference.

A) you intenionally went to encircle stuff of other people playing on qaz's/rhx's server without permission with your ****ty wall.. i didnt do so on mine. since, y'know, i dont want to offend anyone and such things like common courtesy.
B) my wall isnt filled with ****ty gaps, it doesnt obstruct **** for miles aroound and it doesnt really harm anybody.

In other news, Fenris's first public elevator has been installed for access to the deck above including the kitchen, buffet, and lounge. For those who cant use the elevator (which I highly doubt will be the case), there are some emergency stairs too. They are located between the med-bay and the CIC.

Sidenote: The wall would have looked better if it was built to the terrain, and not a predetermined height. That way, it'd be a wall that flowed with the terrain instead of just a wall. By that I mean building ten cobblestone blocks high all around instead of ten, then twelve to match the previous ten, then six, and so on

Flat is mundane and boring regardless of whatever additional things you do to it. It's still flat, and a wall
