Title: Error when loading
Post by: Johnmike on November 11, 2003, 07:41:57 pm
I -always- get an error when I  load a Freespace 2 mission.  It always seems to happen when it loads a capital ship.  For example, it never happens during the training missions.  Second, it points to an capital ship.  I can't copy and paste, the error, since my mouse pointer goes -behind- the error box.  However, I can click 'ok' from behind.  I'll type as much as I see.  Looks like mIRC scripting.

In sexpression: ( when
     ( true)
     (Subsys-set-random
       "Iceni"
        0
        100
        "Engine03"
        "Engine02"
        "Engine01"
        "Navigation"
        "Sensors"
        "Communication"
  )
)
(Error appears to be: Engine03)
File: E:\Languages\Visual Studio Projects\Visual C++\fs2_open\Mission\MissionParse.cpp
Line: 4168

That's the best I can do.  Keep in mind it does this with all of the capital ships.  Iceni is only one example I could easily get to.  I press 'cancel' or 'ok' and it comes up again.  After three or four times, it goes away.  Then I can go through the briefing fine.  I start the level and there are no problems.  However, I ran into another problem.  On level, I think it's five, where you try to scan the supply crates which have shielding that sensors can't penetrate, you find an Iceni surrounded in Asteroids, and after you destroy them it jumps out?  Well, when it jumps out I run into the same problem.  I don't have the time to give you the exact error message.  It wouldn't help much anyway, since it has varied problems with all kinds of capital ships.  I'd appreciate any help you can give.

By the way, it's not important, but when I move the fighter in DX8 mode the hud glow (the color of the hud background) sometimes flashes on and off.  Only when changing direction.  Also, when I'm in OpenGL mode, that won't heppen, but with the cockpit glare I can see ugly polygons on my screen, the color of the glare.  Glare means when your cockpit lights up from the sun.  Increase in contrast, in case my vocabulary is off.

Have you installed any mods Johnmike? That error is due to FS2 finding a model that doesn't have the right subsystems on it.
 It could be an FS2_open problem but it might also be a problem with what you have installed.

Post by: Johnmike on November 12, 2003, 06:10:02 am
No mods.  Oh yeah, and what version is that?  I'm trying it now.  Previously I was using 3.5.5.

Edit:  I worked!  I think I was using fs_open_r.exe or something...

Now all I need fixed is the HUD problem and the glow problem that I described.

By the way, you should allow attatchments in  this forum.  >.<

look for a ships.tbl somewere in your fs folders

and try makeing a new pilot

this sound more and more like a data problem

Sounds like a dodgy Iceni model really.

You have got VPView32 right? If you do, dredge one out of root.vp.

Then make sure you dredge the NTF Iceni model out of sparky.vp and plonk those in the relevant directories, essentially flooding the locations with the original data.

Then see what happens. :)

The Iceni isn't the problem.  This happens with almost all capital ships. And I do -not- have ships.tbl.

If you don't have any custom tables or models or whatever overwriting what's in the VPs then this error should not be happening. It's certainly not the coder's fault, so don't blame them.

Best bet? Reinstall the game :nod:

Now here, fixing bugs do take time. It must be frustrating for you, but hey, at least you gave the SCP coders all the information they need - it's bug squashing time, hopefully they'll catch yours. :)

Which FSOpen version is this? Are you using the latest launcher?

I wasn't blaming you for the problem.  I was saying that out of everyone you're the ones best suited to fix this kind of problem.

I'm using 3.5.5, the latest release listed on the site.

There's one in my FAQ but I doubt it will be any help. The game is having problems with engines that the Iceni SHOULD have.

WHAT ARE TABLE (.TBL) FILES. HOW DO I FIND ONE? HOW DO I ADD TO IT?

Table files are the cornerstone of FS2. They tell the game which ship use which models, which weapons they can fire, the properties of those weapons etc. However this means that if you want to add new ships or weapons to the game you need to understand the tables at least a little. In this section I'll teach you what you need to know to install a mod. If you're looking to make your own table modifications have a look in the Modding section and at GE's VPView Tutorial once you've finished here.
Many mods come with a little entry which is supposed to be added on to the relevant table. So the first thing you'll need is a copy of the table. You can get that here. Unzip it and plonk it in your Freespace2\Data\Tables directory. Tables can be opened in any text editor, you can even use MS word, but you must make sure you save the file as a TEXT file and not as a document. Simply cut and paste the table entry you got from mod below the last table entry.

you need visual c and the source to access the debugger.

does this run fine using retail fs2?

the table was there the whole time... somehow though, your table either doesn't have the subsystems sections parsed correctly, or the capital models are all ****ed up...

root_fs2.vp is where the tables are. size =  ~6MB
sparky_fs2.vp is where the models and a bunch of game data is.  size = ~250MB.

i'd suggest the smaller one first ;).  it looks like bad tables anyway
