yeah you'd have to teach the AI to look beyond 'help i'm inside a bounding box' *flip a *****

I want to see this in action

Re: A celebration of Freespace
So, you can't create a local environment where different rules apply?  Probably not, but I know in Portal they created a sort of 'bubble' around the Portals where the physics calculating was less accurate, to reduce the delay when creating Portals from 500ms to ~10ms (delay was due to calculating the physics on the other side or something).

Ofc, I'm not a coder, so I have no clue, just looking for a solution, that's all.

what you are trying to say is 'it'd be cool if we could make the AI work inside objects'

Re: A celebration of Freespace
It would be cool. Unfortunately, AI that understands the locality of surrounding objects well enough to navigate intelligently around them is one of those kinds of things where there are only two options:

1. Write really ugly nasty hacks to make it work in an engine never designed to allow it.
2. Rebuild large chunks of the game engine completely (probably easier to just start from scratch).

In other words, I'm certainly not volunteering for the project anytime soon. :)

You sick bastard. Don't you know the AI has feelings too? The support ship got scared and ran away from Shivan bombers once when I was playing the default campaign!

Re: A celebration of Freespace
It's true that Descent and Freespace are from the same editor, and the player controls a ship in these 2 games, that's a common point.
But, Freespace still Freespace and Descent still Descent ; I cannot imagine playing a Descent level with the flying controls of Freespace.. in Descent you have to dodge missiles, and you cannot just accelerate or brake, you have to move left, right, up, down, etc.. because Descent's maps are tortuous and so you don't have in Descent the same liberty degrees as in Freespace. So, if someone wants to bring up a Descent mod for freespace, he would have to make these things possible.
Another hard thing is that in Descent there are powerups, and they are crucial to the gameplay ; so developers would have to make up some item system, plus other keys to switch items or things like that ? (and a different HUD, because the Freespace HUD has been designed for a vessel to cary no more than 4 primary or secondary weapons ; if a vessel cary more, it will be some kind difficult to switch weapons.

Bringing Descent to Freespace would be a really huge project I think. And the gameplay between Freespace and Descent is very different..o

Nah, the thread took on a bit of a Descent-mod tangent over the last page or so, which was mostly my fault.  So to everyone, especially myself, less talk, moar pics. :p

The Antagonist featured powerups so they're doable in FS Open...

EPICNESS!
A small voice in my head tells me they are have followed us here in the Milky Way. They follow us until we are dead at their feet. We are nomands of the stars, no longer the race that was loved by the Great Elders. My name is Kyral and this is my story of survival.

There is no sanctuary for us, in this Universe. We will fight the Terror for one last time on this Shining World. May the Transcendent judge us kindly in the Life Stream.

Re: A celebration of Freespace
The original Hyperion (Steve-O's ship from which Karuna is derived) actually used beams some time ago. Steve-O has recently switched to plasma cannons though. Seems like I don't have any screens of them (well, I modified the original table a bit, but the idea is still the same), but I'll make some.
