while this might sound like a stupid question. i've been absent for quite some time. for the life if me i can't seem to add an image to a post. i've clicked on insert image button, looked through the help and can't seem to figure out what i haven't done. would someone please kindly slap some knowledge into my aging brain

Images from anywhere on the internet generally work if linked this way. There are more advanced options depending on what you intend to do with them, but the most straightforward way is the following (disregard the empty spaces):
[ img ] <link goes here> [ /img ]

that has worked for what i am planning. everywhere else seemed to not like working for me

Speaking from experience be careful with direct links, as sometimes the sites will substitute a goatse or drunken santa, getting you banned 🤣🤣

Imgur should definitely be safe, I wouldn't worry about that.
