Is it possible to have two textures one on top of the other in any way?

If it is (and I mean in *any* possible way... perhaps Valathil could help us here), the effect can be substantially improved.

This is exactly how I deal with these problems when they appear in my architectural renderings, for instance with grass. I need both a very good texture up close but something else that stops the far away mesh to appear like a tiled carpet. I do this with two textures on top of each other, the one on top with 50% transparency. I use one texture with 1 meter (+-) in size, the second 10/100m in size (depends on the project). The first deals with the fine texture, the second deals with shades of colors, diluting the tile effect. The solution is perfect.

Maybe using two parallel tiled planes one with smaller tiles, the other with bigger ones. The top panel using a -trans texture at 50% as it is done for nameplates. You have to leave some space between those planes to avoid collision problems, but it may work.

That's what I though when I said that:
I see only one way to do it, and it'd result in massive z-fighting.
Z-fighting occurs when two polygons are very close together and the player is so far away from them FSO considers them to be in the same place. FSO can't decide which one to render on top, and the effect is not pretty. A coder can explain it better.

Well then there's nothing you can do, except to give two different textures to the plains and to the mountains.

If you give a texture to the plains sized X, and to the mountains 10x, it could alleviate the visual troubles. At least the mountains wouldn't look like fx of sci fi movies from the 80s.

EDIT: But of course Battuta is right. This is a minor detail and the story is what matters. If people were mostly interested in the graphx we wouldn't be here...

*G* Scooby did a great job with that Wing Commander 2 Starbase. The Artemis Class fits in one of the 12 docks.
I set for the Intro several waypoints and set the camera target on the Artemis. So you watch the ship on its way to the landing bay ;)

I still work on it and search then for voice actors :) You see the final scene when its done :)

Spamming the thread a little here, but I needed to share how incredibawesome this looks with normals.



The big ugly crater will be being rebuilt - see the one in the background? It's easy to miss because it fits pretty seamlessly with the actual moon surface ([EDIT] - Actually easier to see on the older image), but it's a separate pof file that can be moved around to increase the detail in areas of the surface where the mission takes place. That one works, where the big bulbous one doesn't, but they were made in fundamentally different ways - I'll use the style of the first one and build a few more like that.

Yeah - it's just something to put in there, I don't have any moonbases built yet. That said, it does work quite well, doesn't it? :D

Oh, a little while yet. I only did any of this because I saw The E's post and wanted to see if I could actually do it. So there was no forward planning or intent to release - the assets aren't really all there yet, certainly not release quality. At this point, it's still in Beta - if I can be arsed to make some more landforms, then put it together and finalize everything, I'll probably release it this break, otherwise, well, I can't really say, unfortunately.

Obviously massively primitive at this point - no craters or hills or anything, but I think it turned out fairly well for what was, essentially, a half hour's work.
