The 'Ancient' ships we have are a little dull as Ancient ships. I wish someone would open up a new aesthetic approach, something a bit less like tame Shivans and a little more grungy and mechanical.

Eh, for following the design standard the Knossos put forth, they're not poorly done really. I do kind of think the new Akrotiri didn't have enough mechanical bits more too many... curvy spikey bits added though.

I'm not super attached to the Knossos aesthetic - given the enormity of the Ancient empire in both space and time I'd expect considerable heterogeneity.

Look how different a Fenris and a Hecate are. Or an Orion and a Pegasus. Or a Deimos and a Ursa.

I don't see why we shouldn't expect a similar level of heterogeneity from the Ancients as we can see in Terran designs.

Every race has ONE style of aesthetics, tops. Every game designer knows this fundamental law of the universe.

Actually Star Wars was pretty good at averting that. Designs only looked similar from a same manufacturer, not a same faction.

Oh yeah, fair enough and I agree. I was just saying that the fanmade ancient ships do well in following its aesthetic.

It's a shame we never got V's planned FS2 expansion that involved the Ancients somehow. There's a good chance we would've seen some more ship designs from them.

To answer your question, work had started on an expansion pack for FS2, but it got killed pretty early on. I think it might have been about returning to Earth, but I really don’t remember.
