Re: Freespace/Blue Planet Marker Illustrations
Gripping read and another super illustration!

At one point i was somewhat reminded of the Multivac hypercomputer in Asimov's "The Last Question". Click click, whrrrr.

Heh, never put all your eggs in one basket, GTVA.  First the Colossus, then this.  Should have left a hedge fund for a few collies in there as well.  Or something.  But, hindsight=20/20.

Amazing work, OneOneThree     :eek2:

Re: Freespace/Blue Planet Marker Illustrations
Reading that, I thought all the shivan data would cause it to go full on "demon seed".......

I actually had plans to include a paragraph about the risk of a runaway singularity event this place posed, and all the measures taken to prevent it.  But I couldn't find a way to segue into it without restructuring everything.

Anyway, I think this is the first writing I've ever made public so it's a relief to hear it isn't ****, although tech descriptions must be the easiest thing to write since they're a solid block of exposition.  And if there is anything not so good about it, fire away.  Maybe my notion of how the era would play out is terribly conceived.

Since I noticed nobody had named the research lab for the Hard Light Fleet in Star Trek Online yet, I've named it Stygian Respite.

schrödinbug (noun) - a bug that manifests itself in running software after a programmer notices that the code should never have worked in the first place.

<Aesaar> literary criticism is vladimir putin

<MageKing17> "There's probably a reason the code is the way it is" is a very dangerous line of thought. :P
<MageKing17> Because the "reason" often turns out to be "nobody noticed it was wrong".
(the very next day)
<MageKing17> this ****ing code did it to me again
<MageKing17> "That doesn't really make sense to me, but I'll assume it was being done for a reason."
<MageKing17> **** ME
<MageKing17> THE REASON IS PEOPLE ARE STUPID
<MageKing17> ESPECIALLY ME

<MageKing17> God damn, I do not understand how this is breaking.
<MageKing17> Everything points to "this should work fine", and yet it's clearly not working.
<MjnMixael> 2 hours later... "God damn, how did this ever work at all?!"
(...)
<MageKing17> so
<MageKing17> more than two hours
<MageKing17> but once again we have reached the inevitable conclusion
<MageKing17> How did this code ever work in the first place!?

<@The_E> Welcome to OpenGL, where standards compliance is optional, and error reporting inconsistent

<MageKing17> It was all working perfectly until I actually tried it on an actual mission.

<IronWorks> I am useful for FSO stuff again. This is a red-letter day!

<MageKing17> TIL the entire homing code is held up by shoestrings and duct tape, basically.

Just a sketch, but it might turn into something nice soon.

i'm pretty sure this is what you'd find scrawled on the wall of laporte's padded cell

(i do think that saturn looks a bit fat though but the rest of it is excellent)

A gassy Titan? Guess it had too many Karunas for lunch. lol.
If I agreed with you, we would both be wrong

Re: Freespace/Blue Planet Marker Illustrations
honestly i wish BP could have glowing heatsinks and venting coolant, it'd look great and give you a connection to some of the tactical mechanisms that are normally behind the scenes

Re: Freespace/Blue Planet Marker Illustrations
Could FSO could pull off venting coolant convincingly?

Not without a more in depth material and particle editor. (UE4 level stuff basically)

Re: Freespace/Blue Planet Marker Illustrations
We have a new way to define particle spews, so the chances are good that such things can be pulled off. We'd basically have to create a system for event-driven particle spews (like, weapon fires, 3 seconds later, particles pop up)

That reminds of a very old oft-requested feature that I haven't heard asked for much in some time though... volumetric nebulae, or basically, a nebula you can enter and leave within the confines of the same mission area.

I always thought the new Titan looked like a shark. And now you've captured it feasting on the flesh of its quite hopelessly outmatched prey.

Bloody brilliant.

The remix too.

Re: Freespace/Blue Planet Marker Illustrations
It's just Race to Destruction with a beam sound thrown in there, I don't know if that's a proper remix.  Still, glad you like it!  I decided to render entirely in Photoshop this time and I think it paid off.
