Title: CloudFlare access issues on the wiki
Post by: MatthTheGeek on November 10, 2015, 01:50:02 am
I was trying to edit a page for BP stuff yesterday and when I tried to hit preview, cloudflare gave me an error 524: timeout on the entire wiki until this morning. Thinking it was just bad timing, I tried again this morning, wiki was back up but when I tried previewing again, cloudflare error again (only on the wiki, forums work fine).

Am I breaking something? The wiki entry is 63k characters long, I can break it down into smaller entries if I must but It sounds to me like the wiki should be able to at least tell me if I'm hitting a limit instead of timeouting on me?

I get 524's cloudflare error when trying to upload files to the wiki. Not sure if it's related to the character limit.

I've seen one comment on the web that large pages may exceed loading timeouts; if Cloudflare sets aggressive timeouts then the size of the page could be responsible.

Which specific wiki page has the issue?

(sorry, half boozled, not sure if my post is incoherent?)

There should be no limits other than those imposed by either CloudFlare or php settings.

Cloudflare is terrible on the wiki, I am frequently locked out for 24-48 hours after trying to upload pictures.

Yeah, the problem isn't getting a timeout when you try to send something big, the problem is getting blocked for multiple hours when that happens. It's not just problematic, it's a showstopper here.

EDIT: 12h later and I still can't access the wiki. Can someone in charge actually do something about this?

In theory, I've made some adjustments that should work. CloudFlare has now made it possible to set sub-section matching ruleset/conditions.

Hopefully what I've set up will resolve the issue, if not, I'll try something else.

As PM'd to you yesterday, problem is still there. Got blocked while editing yesterday and got blocked again this morning.

OK do I have to make another thread in Site support, since goober locked my previous one? A wiki is not much use if you can't edit it without getting blocked for days.

I would, Goober or someone can always merge the two threads.

See http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=90894.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=90894.0) and http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=90896.0 (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=90896.0)

After two days of being blocked (for the 5th time this week) I was able to do some tests, managed to create a page 203 lines (21191 characters) long, then tried to create another one (347 lines, 39952 characters) and got cloudflared again.

It's impossible to do any serious testing on the blocking threshold when you are blocked for ENTIRE DAYS whenever cloudflare decides to throw a fit. This makes the wiki not only extremely difficult to use, but also absolutely punishing for people trying to put content in it.

And please goober, next time wait until the problem is actually solved before aggressively locking threads? kthks.

I'll move and merge the threads.  And I'll see if I can track down Zacam.

EDIT: And MatthTheGeek, if there are two or more threads covering the same problem, it's too easy to assume the other thread is going to solve it.  Best to keep things focused.

 :banghead:

I uploaded 2 images, and then got cloudflared out. This is ridiculous. Can't put up galleries when I release a new ship, because I know uploading images kills my access. Can't really edit the Frontlines pages to account for the new announcement, because getting it up to date means uploading a bunch of ship pics, and I will be locked out. Can't do anything of substance with the wiki, and can't even properly mod, because I can't see the ships.tbl pages and the like for reference, because I'm locked out.

And FYI, these lockouts typically last 12 - 24 hours at a minimum. I'm motivated, I have the free time, but I can't do anything. Bet you that I wont be motivated or have the free time when I finally get wiki access again.

We need to dump cloudflare.

It's Sunday night, and I've spent the entire weekend locked out of the wiki. Achieved none of what I wanted to achieve.

The wiki is poorer because of this.

This is a real ****ing problem.

Okay, so, last effort I can think of would be migrating the Wiki to a sub-domain properly with a redirect so that /wiki/ (at the end of the URL) becomes a wiki. at the beginning instead and seeing what that does, because having it shadowed under the main domain like it is isn't helping any.

Can't hurt to try, right?

:bump:

I may be affected by this as well; forums are now up but I'm still getting a HTTP 524 for the wiki.

EDIT: HTTP 524 seems to be caused by the user purging the cache too many times over a short period of time in response to the Wiki having problems generating thumbnails immediately after an image is uploaded. Alternatively, it may be caused by thumbnail generation problem itself, although this is unlikely.
