Okay, here's the deal. I'm planning to organise multiplayer battles. The battles will be listed here and will be set to GMT +10 (Check your timezones in your start bar clock to find out when that is). Every weekend, starting August 4th, will be 'FS2 multiplayer night'.
I'm taking the initiative to get this off the ground, but i'll need some help. If you are interested, register your interest here or PM me. If the times or dates dont suit you, then say so and we'll see if we can get a majority vote to change it.
Dates are set as following : -
August 4th : - 9pm
August 11th: - 10pm
August 18th: - 9pm
And we'll keep going from there. Tell me what you think?
-
Uh what would the time be at central?
-
I like the idea, but you're going to need to have at least two such sessions on each day to accomodate different timezones. I can actually play for a while at 4am here, but most people wouldn't be able to.
It's certainly worth trying through. This is basically what we did in Descent 2 last year, although without organizing it in any formal way.
-
Cool then. What im thinking of doing is getting another 1 or 2 people who are willing, and have good, fast connection speeds to host the games, depending where they live. I'm hoping to get someone who lives in US, and someone who lives in Europe/Uk. Im in Aus, so i can cover the pacific region. People living in western coast USA should be able to connect to my games without too much lag either.
Also this will mean that they can join at times suitable for them. It'll always been on the Saturday night of each week, starting next week, but i'll need volunteers and sign-ups for definites. not 'maybes'. I'm not gonna host a game and wait 15 minutes for joiners if no one shows.
Limit will be 16, 4 wings. Most probably co-ops and team battles.
Also, i need people to say which time slot they're on.
Im on GMT +10. Check your time on the start bar and let me know.
I need a designated host for US and Europe/UK. Let me know if you're interested. You'll need a connection speed of at least 1mb.
***EDIT*** yer, i purposely reset the voting, and fixed it up a bit.
-
i registered interest for Aus timeslot
-
wicked. im in Aus too. ;)
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE !
-
Frikken Aussies.
-
I'm down for the USA time slot. (EST)
-
Umm, what would night time be in EST (GMT - 5) time? I work night shift, I'd only be available from like 4 or 5 PM - 9 PM, or - 8 AM next day if I have the night off.
-
EST is what will be used for the US time slot.
(So 9pm EST)
Anyway, i'll need someone willing to host the EST games.
Also if people could list their time zone, that'd be great.
Myself, im +10.
-
Umm, will we have 3.6.10 by then? :D XD
-
Will anyone beat me in a dogfight?
doubtful. :P
-
Its hard for me to play because i use mouse. :P
-
I only use the keyboard.
-
I use both.
-
Well, still need a host for the US server. Lemme know if you're interested. Must have at least 1mb cable.
-
... whaddya mean? Processor cache? :wtf:
-
... whaddya mean? Processor cache? :wtf:
huh? whats that got to do with it ?
anyhow, i need ins and outs of people are going to be down for this. PM me. I'm still in need of a US host and a Euro host, since i cant host there.
-
I'm on EST but am something of a night person and can typically play between 11pm and 4am. Earlier in the day, around 3pm or so, might work too.
As for hosting games, I may be able to do a few. It depends on the number of players.
-
Oh, cable. I thought you said cache.
Not sure if I have 1MB Cable, I think so, but I also think it's not going to perform at that rate...
-
Since it -IS- a fast game, you'll probably need a fast connection of 1mb+ . Check with your ISP to see which your speed is. Like i said, i'd host , but by the proper time for US gamers to play i'd be reading the insides of my eyelids. ;)
-
My connection is 6m down and 768k up, but it can sometimes be unreliable. I can probably host if nobody else is there to, however.
-
Problem is, I'm a complete n00b at hosting; I know how to do it now, but not how to configure missions etc, etc. ie, I've never done it. Turey & SuperNova told me how it's done as far as connection settings & object updates though. Do I actually have to be there? ie, sitting at my computer? Prolly. Hmm. Problem is the first & last night I will have to leave for work @ 10:20 PM or so, so unless there is a way for me to leave my computer on, and let you guys use it, I'd have to close down at that time. The 2nd night, I have off, so np there.
-
I have spent several hundred hours playing this online, but the last time I played was in 2002 or something. I know my way around the game itself though and actually still have my old pilot with all the PXO stats.
Retail FS2 allowed you to set up standalone servers, but I've heard that it does not currently work in FSO. You may need to be there in that case.
As for object updates, everyone had that on low in the PXO days as that was the only way to get things playable, but it made primary weapons quite a bit harder to use. I don't know if it's still done this way though.
-
They said if you were playing, keep it at low, if hosting, set to high. Standalone servers will be fixed in 3.6.10
-
Yes, that was the same thing people did back then. It means that you typically need to fire primary weapons a bit in front of your target lead indicator (so that it looks like they're passing in front of the ship) to actually hit them.
-
...With explains my arse being handed to me. I usually end up a bit behind the lead indicator. Why can't the lead indicator take current net conditions into effect, and adjust accordingly? C'mon, you programmers & math wizzes. *cracks whip* I'm lazy!!! :( :( :( pleeeeeeeaasseeee! I'm begging, is that good enough? :( :( :(
-
I'm the resident math guy, but I hardly know anything about the code. :p
You get used to it after a while. The only annoying thing is that you need to adjust the lead distance based on the ping time, so if the ping is varying a lot it's nearly impossible to hit anything with primaries.
-
My ping usually bounces between 70 and 95 within 1 or 2 seconds, back and forth all the time. Is this bad? I can adjust in Halo, because I get the hit sounds.
-
It should be good enough for a client. I played on a 56k with 250-ish pings for the majority of my time and somehow still managed to do well. :p I played FS2 a lot back then since it was one of the few games that ran well online with dialup.
-
If a lot of you are going to play I recommend using the BtRL executable instead of 3.6.9 Official. That way the host can use -cap_object_update 0 instead of having to scream at everyone else to pick low object updates.
-
Hmm. Good idea. VC, can you make sure everyone does this?
-
Hmm. Good idea. VC, can you make sure everyone does this?
It'd mean everyone would have to go download BtRL though, and thats up to them to do.
Otherwise, no problems.
-
It would mean that the hosts need the file. You can simply pass it out to everyone.
-
It would mean that the hosts need the file. You can simply pass it out to everyone.
Fair enough.
Still, the fact is that most people are from US, and i'm from AUS. Kinda sad that i got this ball rolling, but i cant kick it. :blah: I'll need a host
-
Why can't the lead indicator take current net conditions into effect, and adjust accordingly?
Because the current net conditions are already outdated information? I bet it would just end up making the manual lead estimation even harder.
It would be interesting to see someone try it though
-
It would need to be an average value, like when you are downloading and it give time remaining. Say your download starts at 825 KB/sec. Yay! Only 30 mins left... then it drops to 400 KB/sec... but the time left value is still incorrect for a while longer, because it's an average value. This would be a good thing, because it keeps your estimated time / lead indicator from fluctuating all over the place each time your connection speed has a .5 second glitch... you wouldn't be able to read the time left / lead indicator, because it'd be bouncing all over the place.
-
Still in need for a UK/Europe time slot host, preferably someone on the +5 GMT time zone, and someone to host USA forums.
Can't believe i havent had any offers..... you lazy bums! :hopping:
-
Well, the 2nd night I should be able to host. :p
-
I'll probably be able to host for the U.S. block, but I can't guarantee it.
-
I have a 10 mb+ down connection. Will you need to do port forwarding in 3.6.10, because I am not entirely sure that I can do this with my SpeedStream 6520 Aliant Telecom modem.
-
Will you need to do port forwarding in 3.6.10, because I am not entirely sure that I can do this with my SpeedStream 6520 Aliant Telecom modem.
You will have to forward the ports (to host, not connect) if you use a firewall and/or router, it's universal for all games.
-
BloodEagle, do you have your port forwarded? I forgot which one, I'm not at my home computer, but it's a UDP port.
-
My internet connection has been acting a bit flaky with certain sites ever since my router took a power surge a few days ago (still mostly works, but some output ports are dead). I might run into trouble hosting this time, but then again it may work fine. I should have a replacement next week.
-
:D You could always run a direct connection to your cable/DSL modem. Oh, and invenst in a $30 Surge protector for your computer & router etc... they are well worth it.
-
I have it on a UPS with surge protection. The problem is that the modem is on the other side of the room, and even though it has its own surge protector, the cable line itself is not protected. The UPS has connections for the coaxial cable but the cable doesn't reach that far. There was a heavy storm here a few nights ago and the router has been acting up ever since, so a surge is the most likely explanation.
-
Hrm... why not move the modem? Just get a joiner & a coax extension.
-
The cable wouldn't reach it and I was too lazy to go out and buy an extender when I was setting it up. :nervous:
-
BloodEagle, do you have your port forwarded? I forgot which one, I'm not at my home computer, but it's a UDP port.
I have the correct port (7808) forwarded for both the UDP and TCP protocols.
Also, according to my router, I receive downstream speeds of 3552 kilobits (3.4 megabits) per second.
-
So, are we going to use 3.6.9 official or the BtRL version?
-
I don't have BtRL, but if you guys want me to use it, I'll download it.
-
I don't have it either at the moment. Is there a link to the exe only?
-
www.fsoinstaller.com/fs2_open_3_6_9_btrl.exe
-
what makes btrl builds different from fso builds?

There's your answer.
-
So I should use it?
-
The server is up, ya scurvy curs.
-
It's 9:30, and I'm missing Feasting on Asphalt for this, join or die!
:beamz:
-
It's not a "multiplayer battle-night" if only 2 people are on. :hopping:
-
Give it time to get noticed. :p
-
It's been an hour.
-
I meant wait until this whole "Battle-night" thing gets noticed, not just your game! :p
-
I'm playing! Others join!!!
EDIT: That was fun, although I forgot to remove Josh's inertia mod, and outstripped them in a Herc II
We should do it tomorrow!
-
Aww, I didnt realize there was a multi player game going on, trying to figure out to to make freespace realize im on a cable connection and not dial up. :(
-
Are you still playing? I'm available now.
-
Yes.
-
Looks like I just missed you. I'll join in after the current game is over.
-
Aww, I didnt realize there was a multi player game going on, trying to figure out to to make freespace realize im on a cable connection and not dial up. :(
Have you actually tried playing with it set to dial-up? The connection I'm on right now isn't dial-up, but it needs to be set to it to work.
-
Thanks, but I seem to have figured it out, had to load the launcher and change the settings from there from dial up to cable.
Booted up, and now I'm in the lobby.. all alone.
Oh well, I belive I needed to download mutliplayer missions anyways.
-
It should autod'l them. (I'm @ work now :( , next weekend...)

Did you set your firewall/AV to allow traffic on port 7808?
-
That went pretty well. It was good to play this again after so many years.
I don't understand why the official Volition missions aren't validated though. That makes no sense at all and seems like a rather serious problem.
-
Tonight?

I dont belive zonealarm basic allows me to specify ports to open, but I have set freespace 2 to have open access to whatever ports it may need, hope that does the trick.
-
That's unlikely to work, but it's certainly worth a try. If it doesn't and you're on XP, then I'd suggest turning off ZoneAlarm in favour of the XP firewall when you feel like playing multi, as that at least does allow specific ports to be opened.
-

I actually switched from ZA to Sunbelt Kerio for this very reason.
-
Well that was cool.
Sorry to 'ultima21', whoever that was, during that co-op mission. You had more shivans on you then flies on cow crap!
-
Theres a game going on?
Doh, been messing around with Wing commander and Btrl demo's.
(Which btw are mind blowing)
Hmmm, lemme fire up FS2 and see if anyone is there. (Assuming my firewall is acting like it should)
-
I assumed I had added port 7808 to windows firewall but when I loaded up FS2 there were no games listed, tried again with no firewall (zone alarm and windows firewall off) and still no games showing.
So either no one is on (1027pm est) or one of my settings is still off.
Doh

@Pathwarden:
Opening the ports is mainly for hosting. By the way, are you using a router? If so, you need to enter your router's (home) IP address into a web browser. The IP by default is usually 192.168.1.1

P.S. Game Listings and Statistics (http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/main.php?mod_select=none)
No, I am hooked up directly to the cable modem.
Thanks for the link, just noticed the "Active Games" tab, that will help me know if a game is running or not for troubleshooting purposes.
So I guess I'll refresh the active games list from time to time, and when I see a game going I'll drop my firewall and see if I can get on.
Edit : Set my profile on FS2net, Yay at my 0 kills!

Erm, haven't been following this thread, when's the next game in GMT time?

-
So, is it still going on tonight?
-
I should be able to come around 11:45 EST.
-
Is it on now?
-
castor is hosting a game now.
-
S'in briefing right now, I'll join in a few.
-
K, game is open now.
-
i'll join...
-
I'm on IRC if/when you guys can take another player. :)
-
Hey where'd everybody go? Me,
SuperNova Milk, and akenbosch are waiting... XD
-
I'm guessing you guys started an hour early.
-
Hey where'd everybody go? Me, SuperNova Milk, and akenbosch are waiting... XD
Add canadian and BloodEagle to that list...
-
supernovas "bleeding to death" and nose jokes cost me the chance to play a game... :(
-
Dang it... Goose was there too... guess it crashed. *waits for server to come back up, pecking the "refresh" button*
Don't worry aken, there will be other times... and we were hoping for more players. 'Cause once you start, no one else can join.
Oh, and I think we're gonna have another go at it right now, if I"m not mistaken?
-
That was fun. :) I will try to show up a bit earlier tomorrow night, if you're going to be playing again.
-
The next official date was the 18th. But, if enough ppl want to, I'll join in tomorrow.. should be possible, I think.
-
I think there were some games last Sunday, but I couldn't come for those.
-
Most times the games are too late for me...
If i can find the password for my router I will host some.
-
--snip--
I'll be hosting a game tonight, if I get any response. PM me.
-
Gah, whats the time? PST? EST? Central? GMT? Please, I can't make heads or tails of that schedule. I'm available to play between 2PM PST to 5AM PST.
-
Play right now. Reply and I'll start a game.
-
REPLY!
edit: dumbest post ever

Hey I didn't feel like reading past the first page, so if this has already been suggested, sorry.
Create a calender for maybe two months at a time and two months ahead of time (let's call each two month period of time a rotation), and pick days to have matches. Try to keep the days regular, so it'd be like "every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm GMT" or something like that. Also, have either multiple times for every few time zones, or find a time so that it fits the most populated time zones well. Post it on the board and have people sign up to host. But post each rotation's calender a rotation ahead of time to give people a chance to sign up to host.
There. Now I bet you it was posted on like the second page and every member found different huge problems in this.
-
Maybe tomorrow.
-
An alternative I've used for other games is to add people who play the game to an IM list and append the name of the game to an alias: ex: FS2 Trelixian. When both players are online they can get a match going. If anyone thinks that's a good idea, my yahoo and aim is 'raltianwarrior', my msn is [email protected] , and my gabber is misterfett through gmail.
On the topic of battle night, I played some awesome 6 person games on the 11th. People were on around 6-midnight EST.
-
We should all agree on some sort of instant messenger then. My XFire is S.T.A.R.S-Steve and my MSN is [email protected]. Please send a PM on the forum before a request because I won't accept them unless it is prearranged.
-
:welcomepurple:
Trexilian!
EDIT: I think that X-Fire is the best idea because you can launch your game from there.
EDIT2: Everyone E-Mail X-Fire about adding the SCP. IF they see a lot of demand for it, they'll add it.
-
Would this be a good E-Mail to send to X-Fire?
Hello,
I am part of a group seeking to play FreeSpace 2 online in an organized way. It is an old game, but is constantly upgraded, and the multi-player community is steadily growing. The community was quite large several years ago, and then Parallax Online shut down. We have ressurected it, and hope for it to become a large gaming community If you could add support it would greatly aid the community, found here. You can download the game below.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.
EDIT2: and how do I host a game without actually having to play? e.g: Say I wanted to have my PC as a server and leave it up to auto-play a bunch of missions as people joined? How would I do this?
-
I don't think we need to get all that elaborate. In Descent 2 last summer, there was basically a core group of three or four of us who played regularly and many others joined in when they saw the games running. The HLP IRC channel is a convenient place to coordinate games for now, although the PXO lobby should be back up in the future. You can check the FS2Net site to see what games are currently running.

This is unfortunately not possible right now. FS2 has a standalone server feature but it doesn't work in current FSO builds.

My suggestion or Cole's?

Yours.

:(
-
Yours.
No, I meant yours. :p It might be a good idea in general to publicize FS further, but is probably unnecessary in the context of these game sessions.
It should suffice to just announce the times here a few days in advance. Since many people are on summer breaks right now, we can probably afford to have more than one session per week for now.
-
Hmm, if anyone uses Mozilla FireFox, then go get ChatZilla (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16), and then configure the options to display your nick (eg, jr2), and then click "HLP IRC Channel" at the top of the page. :) There's always 5, sometimes 15 ppl on. This would be a great way to co-ordinate multi.

I've got a radical new idea! Why don't we play on the weekends!? ;7

Yeah, but almost no one ever talks.

They might if more ppl (=newbs) were on to ask questions. :p
-
Every time I go on there is no one there.

There's like ten ppl on right now... methinks you're doing something wrong. Try using ChatZilla (see my previous post) & clicking on the HLP Icon. If that doesn't work, tell me.

That's because they all got tired of staring at the screen waiting for someone to talk, so they went to do something else and left the window open.

Ya, see, when ppl pull up their IRC window to see if anyone said anything, they find that you've already been there and left in a huff. :blah:
-
im up for a game. anyone want to play? (im only going to be available for an hour or so more)
-
Hey, about what days is everyone usually free? ("I am free almost every ---day evening/afternoon/night/morning (GMT+/-X)")
Is there enough people to have separate slots for Europe and North/South America?
-

A multiplayer game calender for August 2007.
Most recent as of August 17.
Tentative dates are up there, as I'm not sure when anyone is free or not. If you can host for your location at the specified time, edit the picture with your name and re-upload.
-
Your effort is appreciated, but that calender is going to be cumbersome to maintain. It would be easier to just maintain a listing in a text format. I can update the original post once we have decided on something.
I posted my times in the other thread:
Timezone: GMT -5:00 (EST)
Availability: 3:00pm-7:00pm and 12:00pm-4:00am, on almost all days until mid-September. I will typically only be around if something has been arranged in advance though.
I should be able to host at least four people as well.
-
What about the HLP calendar?
-
Ya. The one that's never used (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?action=calendar) (at the top of every page)...
-
August 18th: - 9pm
I'm going to go ahead and start a server.
-
You can't edit that one. Plus it's never used.
Anyway, text should suffice. CP: Will it be all right if I put you down for the 22nd of august and move the time back an hour? (to 10PM GMT; 5PM GMT -5)?
EDIT: SO far we have:
------AUGUST-----
****
20th - 5PM GMT EUROPE GAME
Host: none
****
22nd - 10PM GMT NORTH/SOUTH AMERICA GAME
Host: CP5670
****
23rd - 11AM GMT AUSTRALIA GAME
Host: none
****
25th - 11AM GMT AUSTRALIA GAME
Host: none
9:30PM GMT N/S AMERICA AND EUROPE GAME
Host: none
****
28th - 7PM GMT EUROPE
Host: none
****
31st - 1AM GMT N/S AMERICA *NOTE* At GMT-5, this game will be on the 30th. NOT the 31st.
Host: none
ALSO: I will not be in town next week so if someone wants to do this for the week, post here and then contact that person to have them put you as host.
I'll put this in the hoster people thread, too.

Yes, that should work fine.
Is anyone playing tonight?
-
Me, Bloodeagle, SuperNova, and Aken where just on, but I will join you if you want to play.
edit: started a game if you want to join.
-
I can't see your game. You might have not forwarded the port correctly.
In any case, I guess if it's just the two of us, we might as well wait for tomorrow or something. It's much more fun when you have at least four people.
-
How about now?
-
Not seeing it. :nervous:
EDIT:I have a game up so any one who wants to play is free to join.
-
I can't see your game. Although the multi.log says something different.
-
For gods sake...
Can you make it.
-
I can't see your game. Although the multi.log says something different.
Yeah. That means that somewhere between you requesting an active game packet and the server sending you one someone's firewall/NAT is blocking the response.
The problem is figuring out which one.
-
How about now?
I'm going to be out for a while. I can probably play later today, maybe in three hours or so.
-
karajorma, if you can put together a readme / walkthrough / whatever, just enough so that I can understand about your "other" version of port forwarding, I'll put in in the wiki... hopefully sometime this week.
-
Well that's the problem, although my method of doing things is better than PortForward's it's certainly not easier. PF's method is basically the same for every version of Windows, mine is different for every single router.
I don't particularly fancy writing up an explanation on how to do a reservation on every single router in existence. :D It's a pity they didn't though since they already have guides tailored to each router this would have just been one more.
-
Drop them a suggestion. :D [Jedi mind-control]Offer to help![/Jedi mind-control]

Blast, if i had known earlier, i'd have dropped in two days ago. Please, continue to organize such multiplayer-battles - i'd really like to give it a try. I'm in the european time zone (GMT+1), but since i happen to have semester break right now, i'm relatively flexible in my time scheduling.

We may have a game later today.
-
At this point, we're looking to play at 10:00 PM GMT today, which is a little over three hours from now. So let's get some people coming.
-
I have updated VC's original post to reflect our plans so far.
[edit] On further consideration, it might be easier to switch the multiplayer discussion over to this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,49012.0.html) due to the first post, as the merge function here doesn't work very well. I'm going to lock this thread for now. Discussion on this topic should continue in the other thread instead.
