Title: Report from GTSC Chandrasekhar, Dubhe System

This is Part 1 of The Final War for the Multiverse (https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=94920.0).

Is anyone out there? This is Captain Aditya Haldar of the GTSC Chandrasekhar, calling any Terran or Vasudan vessels. If you receive this message, please reply immediately. What follows is a summary of the situation, as we understand it.

It began less than an hour ago, when the jump nodes disappeared. The stable nodes to Alphard and Barnard's Star and the unstable one leading out of GTVA space are all gone. There was no energy spike or other indications of a subspace cataclysm like the ones that sealed the nodes to Sol and Capella - as far as our sensors can tell, the nodes simply vanished without a trace.

At first we believed our sensors were malfunctioning, but when we attempted to make the jump to Alphard at the former location of the node, our drives were unable to engage. As far as we can tell, the nodes are truly gone. Since then, we have been running an intensive subspace scan of the system, and what we have found is alarming. Typically, every system contains a multitude of transient jump nodes that are only stable for nanoseconds at a time, but we have detected no trace of such ever since the stable nodes disappeared. This defies everything we know about subspace physics.

Even more disturbing, however, is the signal that our scans have detected. It is very faint and at first was believed to be nothing but background noise, but by boosting our sensor power to maximum we have determined that it has a structure, and is repeating. The message is a series of quantum pulses that seem to be emanating from subspace itself - no origin point can be isolated. The signal contains all of the hallmarks of Shivan communications.

All of our efforts to decode the signal have met with failure. Following is a transcription of the best attempt our cryptographers have made so far. It is believed that ETAK is the key to deciphering the signal:

Intriguing.

As this is an interactive story, the first goal of the readers is to translate the message. There is a hint on how to do so in the post.

The start is quite interesting, I'll keep an eye on that. :) The thing with the crossfiction makes me wonder a bit though.

I think I know what the hint is, but it doesn't help much.

Then here's another hint: Break through the Walls to Knowledge.

Making any progress, or do you want more hints?

I'm confident that the community will emerge victors,  which is lucky as I'm at a loss here.   Crypto is not my strongth.   EOD is my strongth.

I'd just like to ask for some clarity here.

Which of the following options is closer to the truth?

1. People are still actively trying to solve this

2. People have given up on solving this

3. People don't care enough to try and solve this

TBH I have no clue.

I was initially interested, but I couldn't make any progress solving it, and none of the hints helped.  So I figured I'd wait to see if anyone else made progress.

Okay, in that case here is a much more obvious hint (spoilered in case you still want to figure it out on your own)

Spoiler:
Google the capitalized words in the last hint

Still no idea. Probably I'm just too stupid for that; and everytime I read the hints I start thinking about Attack on Titan.

Operation Final End

All Shivans must heed this message.

The Great Darkness has been slain. For so long we thought the concept of death or nonexistence to be inapplicable to this entity, but we were wrong. Necrospace proved to be its undoing. There will never be another Transcendant. Now we must finish our role. For too long, vermin have infected our sacred realms, spreading their filth across the stars. Replicating, warring, stripping the universe of its natural resources, polluting Nagari, and leading to the inevitable creation of ontological scourges. For every infestation we sterilize, a dozen more take its place. We have spent a significant fraction of the span of the universe sterilizing plague after plague, yet there is no end in sight. Worse, there are many other universes, some of which do not even have the boon of our presence, allowing the filth to spread unchecked. Even supposedly mature species who have transcended the level of mere diseases are still potentially capable of giving rise to an ontological menace like the Great Darkness. We have already seen what will happen if they are allowed to continue.

No more.

With the fall of The Great Darkness, we can finally focus all of our resources on treating the outbreaks.

As of 11:42:74:6H Multiversal Adjusted Time, Operation Final End, the most ambitious project in the history of our species, commenced. Uniting as many Shivan factions as possible from across the multiverse into one unstoppable force, all ships and units will act as one and have been upgraded with the absolute pinnacle of Shivan technologies.

All uncontacted Shivan factions are to respond to this signal immediately. Enter Deep Subspace and set your drives for the following dimensional frequency: XX97411.67IO62. Then home in on this signal. You will be added to the fleet as we progress with the operation.

The ultimate goal: Complete sterilization of all non-Shivan life throughout the multiverse, as well as removing all possibility of non-Shivan life ever emerging in the future.

Primary strategic weapons employed:

- Brahmadanda (remote activation/deactivation/manipulation of all jump nodes or analogous structures on a Galactic scale)
- Free Position Jump Drive (enables direct Subspace travel from any point in any universe to any point in any other universe, without need of a node or gravitational field)
- Brahmastra (remote supernova inducer, mountable on a single ship. Induction time measured in seconds)
- Necrospace (spacetime contagion, inimical to life. Spreads through Subspace, capable of killing life and preventing future abiogenesis. Capable of destroying concepts and metaphysical states of being. Must be deployed strategically as Shivan life is not immune)

Update from GTSC Chandrasekhar, Dubhe system

22:34 09-20-2371

Long range sensors are picking up very unusual subspace readings from Dubhe. Something is happening to the sun.

If anyone receives this message, I only hope you can make use of the information I have given you.

"Captain! Supernova shockwave incoming, ETA 23 minutes!"

"Dammit! Jump as far away as we can. Maybe if we end up on the very edge of the system we can survive the blast wave."

"Highly unlikely, but I'll try. Inputting subspace coordinates now."

This is Captain Aditya Haldar, signing out, quite probably for the last time. Godspeed.

#salute Captain Haldar.

For the record,  we appear to be up a certain Creek without a paddle.

When faced with dire consequences, the hand makes a good paddle me thinks? :)

But yeah, NO Nodes can pretty much cramp your interplanetary system movements! About that Supernova...Ohhhh "BLEEPING" Hell!

Well, there goes Wings of Dawn... :(

Still, there's one race I don't see listed there...

This made me think a lot of them with the language used and the fact they once came very close to completing a plan to wipe out all non-dalek life in the multiverse.

They might be the offshoot?

Keep in mind, there are many other Terran civilizations throughout the multiverse. Many of them are alternate takes on the Freespace universe, so multiple GTAs and GTVAs still exist. If there is a way for them to coordinate with each other, and then ally with many of the more powerful alien races that are still in the game, the Shivans can be defeated.

Okay, this is a really interesting topic that I wish I had noticed a month ago :P.

I will try to be as active in these topics as possible.

However, is there a reason for it to be fragmented throughout the forum? I mean, fiction like Shetland/Ephesus did consist of only one topic without any problems...

Last-minute note to Captain Aditya Haldar, coming from a friendly soul:

1. The rules have changed - perhaps the same phenomenon that allowed jump nodes to exist also caused subspace travel to be confined to the interior of a star system (excluding nodes), thus it might be possible to attempt jumps outside of the system. Have someone check this possibility.
2. If point 1. isn't true, you need to also consider the possibility of jumping much further than normally possible. I know it's extremely energy expensive, but you've got a supernova detonating right behind you. Perhaps try to make use of that.
Both methods require extensive modifications of navigational systems. You can buy your crew the time for that if you jump as far away from the star as possible:
The total mass of Dubhe star system is over 6 solar masses, therefore the same gravity field intensity is present at nearly 2,5x the distance from the star when compared to Sol. If we assume your vessel is still able to successfully attempt subspace transits in the Kuiper Belt, even if barely, then you've got about 20 hours for working on a solution - if you reach limits of your subspace drive.

Godspeed to you, Captain, and to your crew.
