difference between the mediavps mods?

not quite clear if it matters which one i start with (the mediavps or the upgrade mediavps) sorry, new to the game so it's all new to me!

MediaVPs is the pack of graphical upgrades for the game. If you want to play Freespace 1 with upgraded graphics, I suggest you launch Freespace Port MediaVPs (also suggest you try Silent Threat Reborn after that). If you want to play Freespace 2 with upgrades, launch Freespace Upgrade MediaVPs.
