Title: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched + Patch 1.1!
Post by: LoneKnight on January 18, 2012, 12:41:56 pm
(http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7876/title3j.png)

I am pleased to announce that Burning Heaven, a miniseries campaign, is now launched!

Version 1.1 is now up!

Version 1.1 Download Link: 1.03 GB
Burning Heaven v1.01 on FSMods (http://www.freespacemods.net/download.php?view.829)

Watch the Launch Trailer while it's downloading!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1_5GRLtjoc&feature=youtu.be (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1_5GRLtjoc&feature=youtu.be)

1.1 Updates:
- Major fixes to buggy .pof's (Thanks The_E)
- Resolved issue with Missions 3 warpout
- Fixed Mission 1 bugs
- Resolved Red Alert issues
- Improved volume levels of certain dialogue
- Optimized numerous files and tables
- Removed unnecessary files

Because 1.1 has several critical fixes and because almost every .vp was worked with and optimized, you should remove all version 1 files and replace them with version 1.1. Download link should be above as soon as Swantz.

Burning Heaven is a project I've been working on since this summer. It is fully voice acted, features new/modified ships, a dynamic storyline, custom music, unique environments, and much more.

The actions of a few can inspire a revolution. Experience the events that led to the creation of the Galactic Terran Alliance. Set before the discovery of Subspace, the Terran race battles throughout the Sol System for freedom from a tyrannical government. Play as Phoenix Squadron, a rebel group that refused to turn back following the collapse of a rebellion for independence. The world will change depending on decisions you make. Pilots may leave your squadron if they are not satisfied with the way you are leading. You directly control the fate of many. Will you lead through fear or chivalry?

Thank you to the entire HLP community for answering many of the questions I've had throughout the process of making this project. Enjoy!

Connor "Lone Knight" Norman

EDIT by Swantz: Added link to fsmods. :)
EDIT by LoneKnight: Added 1.1 information, woot!
EDIT by Swantz: Updated link for v1.01

Phoenix squadleader has some kind of pirate accent about him. It sounds strangely fitting. Voice acting oveall is nice. Interesting immersion thus far; looks like the creator has an eye for film directing. I especially like the way the news broadcasts are integrated. I am on mission 3. We'll see what becomes of phoenix squadron.

Is there a specific build I'm supposed to be playing with? I'm running 3.6.14 RC2 and getting a boatload of errors, also all weapons are the FS2 defaults.

It's a problem with Dropbox, that's why it isn't recommended to use it for hosting. It's download caps are really annoying.

I get 155 errors on start up, the intro cutscene works fine but then on the start of the first mission I get an error:

Code: [Select]
There are 3 primary banks in the model file,
but only 2 primary banks specified for ITN Fighter.
This must be fixed, as it will cause crashes.

ntdll.dll! ZwWaitForSingleObject + 21 bytes
kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObjectEx + 67 bytes
kernel32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_RC1.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_14_RC1.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_14_RC1.exe! <no symbol>

You might want to recheck your mod for errors before ppl start downloading it in massive amounts.

Hahah, Dropbox apparently doesn't like when tons of people download it all at once. Doing my best to try to get it up on another site!

On a side note, if there are any experienced coders out there who would be willing to help fix some of the minor bugs for an eventual 1.1 patch, please PM me!

Cheers!

Based upon my guess your 153 errors can be easily fixed. Plus I got stuck on the mission where you destroy the MCOM Station. It wont proceed to the next mission.

in the meantime loneknight you could upload it to freespace mods yourself because you don't need an account for that. since there's a lot of errors, i'd rather wait for a more stable version.

that trailer is also a piece of art but the 3d is pointless; glasses just don't cut it. it still looks anachronistic, i mean what's a hades and hecate doing in the unification era?

Freespace Mods was the first place I tried. As far as I can tell, the max upload limit is like 240 MB.

I believe that's just default to Youtube...

It's pretty fun so far, but unfortunately I was unable to pass the mission where you
Spoiler:
must escort the captured kappa freighter
on the jump after you must defend against atacking fighters my ship never exits the burst speed. I whizz past the target point and am trapped in the jump state. After runing out of ideas I had to quit the mission. Am I doing something wrong?

I've been working with Swantz to get it on the FSMods server. Looking into the issue that some people are having.

I whizz past the target point and am trapped in the jump state. After runing out of ideas I had to quit the mission. Am I doing something wrong?

I just want to point out that increasing the Game Speed during a Boost Jump will mess it up. It scrambles up the way set-ship-speed works.

I can't seem to get past the fourth mission either, for the same reasons bigchunk mentioned.
Also had a problem with the RedAlert for part1.
Framerates in the first mission dropped to about 10 FPS, I usually run at about 60 FPS with all the features selected.

Regarding the warnings on startup:

All of them were due to using "carry-no-damage" instead of the correct "carry no damage" in the subsystem flags for a few ships. Attached to this post is an archive with the corrected tables.

On an organizational note, this is why you always always ALWAYS need to run your mod through debug at least once. Debug builds tend to notice these things, and scream at you.

In addition, I note that you have both a ships.tbl as well as several -shp tbms. It is preferable to merge all those tbms into the tbl prior to release.

In addition, regular 3.6.13 (and, by extension, 3.6.14) builds report this:

Code: [Select]
Model gtibretonia.pof has a null moment of inertia!  (This is only a problem if the model is a ship.)
WARNING: "Not all subsystems in model "gtibretonia.pof" have a record in ships.tbl. This can cause game to crash.  List of subsystems not found from table is in log file." at modelread.cpp:636
Subsystem communicationa in model was not found in ships.tbl!

WARNING: "Invalid subobj_num or model_num in subsystem 'communication' on ship type 'GTI Bretonia'. Not linking into ship!  (This warning means that a subsystem was present in the table entry and not present in the model it should probably be removed from the table or added to the model.)" at ship.cpp:5234
WARNING: "Invalid subobj_num or model_num in subsystem 'navigation' on ship type 'GTI Bretonia'. Not linking into ship!  (This warning means that a subsystem was present in the table entry and not present in the model it should probably be removed from the table or added to the model.)" at ship.cpp:5234

WARNING: "For ship 'GTF Raptor', detail level mismatch. Table has 4, POF has 5." at ship.cpp:8549
WARNING: "GTF Raptor (fighter3t-05.pof) has a null moment of inertia!" at ship.cpp:4542

ERROR: There are 2 primary banks in the model file, but only 1 primary banks specified for ITN Light Bomber. This must be fixed, as it will cause crashes.

There are 2 secondary banks in the model file, but only 1 secondary banks specified for ITN Fighter. This must be fixed, as it will cause crashes.

There are A LOT of issues with the models here. The above is only a small sample. The texture "debris-1" is missing, causing complaints. Then there are several cases where the models have faulty model data. While all of them can be fixed with comparatively little work (and I will try to come up with patches for them), this to me says that you may not have debugged this properly. This is NOT NOT NOT a statement on the overall quality of your story and missions (I haven't been able to get past the fantastic intro because of model errors), just a technical heads-up.

On a non-technical note:

Holy carp this is awesome. Bloody good job there.

The intro is certainly impressive.  However, the game crashed to the desktop right after that.  No error message provided.  I have already downloaded and put in place the fixed tables by E.  Hopefully the remaining issues will be resolved in short order.
Title: Re: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched
Post by: Waistless on January 19, 2012, 10:58:08 pm
Likewise, except I get an error similar to what The E describes regarding the ITN fighter.

Code: [Select]
There are 3 primary banks in the model file,
but only 2 primary banks specified for ITN Fighter.
This must be fixed, as it will cause crashes

Eagerly looking forward to a fix  :pimp:

Still keen to try though.

A patch is currently uploading.

And gods dammit. You people REALLY need to learn how to use debug. The scoobydoo models alone are horrifyingly buggy (Detail0 with the $Subobject property? srsly?).

EDIT:

Patch is uploaded (http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/E/stuff/BurningHeavenPatch.7z). Unpack it into the "Burning_Heaven" directory. I do not guarantee error-freeness, neither do I guarantee that mission balance is still intact. However, it should run on 3.6.14 builds now; I also added cache files for the new models.

Well, after getting the fix from The E. The second mission (the first real one just after the Intro is buggy). I don't know if it was a cutscene or a mission. I've got an objective but my ship doesn't move and I don't know in which ship I'm flying in.

I had to accelerate the time to end the mission and be able to jump.

Then come the fourth mission,
Spoiler:
I tagged the Constantine, all the objectives has been accomplished. I jumped as order by Phoenix. But, the mission is still running.

Spoiler:
mission 7a
Right after the cutscene, Alpha & Beta were already dead and so I don't have a ship despite having the HUD. And when I checked the mission into FRED2, I don't see a thing about Alpha & Beta disappearance in the beginning of the mission. :/

Edit: I rename the seventh mission so I could test it in mission simulator. All works fine. There's something buggy with the .fc file. I don't know how it works exactly, and why after the cutscene Alpha & Beta were dead.

I can confirm the problems everyone else is experiencing.  The first mission was playable but quite laggy and error filled.   Once I reached the fourth mission I got stuck in Ion Boost mode when making the final jump.

I'm also still receiving about 155 errors at start up even after putting the patch in place.

All bugs aside I'm enjoying the campaign so far.

EDIT: Thanks to a little help from E. I am no longer receiving 155 errors on start-up.

I got a fix for the third mission not ending. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17350885/Part%203.fs2) Someone thought it was cool to use ai-warpout when the warp drive wasn't even working in the first place. I changed it out with end-mission and it works.

Make a new .txt file in the folder: Burning_Heaven/data/missions/

Open it up with notepad and copy/paste that hole thing AndrewofDoom posted.

Save it as .fs2 file.

(or save it as .txt and then rename the file from .txt to .fs2)

Okay, I finished it.
Spoiler:
First the good:
It was short but sweet, the story was engaging for me especially thanks to the voice acting and the briefing animations. The music was very fitting for the situation I was in and for the cutscenes too. I didn't find the ship classes immersion breaking. ( You know the Hades for example. ) The ML-10 laser was a nice touch.
Now the bad:
I ran into some pretty pesky bugs so if others didn't recieve these than it isn't a problem.
I had to restart the tag mission even after patches because between jumps the ship wouldn't jump to the next waypoint. I finished it after five tries but after that there weren't any problems like that.
There were numerous bugs in most missions especially with enemy light bombers beacause when they showed up the game would stop and I had to Alt+Tab to see what the problem was: The file said that there was 1 primary weapon banks instead of 2.
Other than these I didn't find any other problem with the campaign.

I enjoyed it so good job!

I'm still having issues with the fourth mission.  The corrected mission file is in place but it didn't help.  When the Ion Boost engages to take you to your target it sticks.  In other words you can't get out of Ion Boost mode.

Any suggestions?

1. There is a way to survive, if you are far enough away I believe.

2. The first firefight clip is from Gamer, another is from the Announcement trailer for Future Soldier.

Glad you enjoyed it! It was supposed to be a miniseries, plus building, designing, and testing the levels myself took time. :P

On other news, expect the Full Patch to be up tomorrow. It's been uploaded to Swantz, waiting for it to make FSMods.

While I enjoy the game so far, I'm having extreme difficulty with the escorting Kappa mission due to various glitches and bugs (Ships wouldn't boost on one playthough. On the next, the boost destroyed MY ship)

I have to go to bed, but so far, the story and voice acting are pretty good.

Well, I really loved the intro (Inception music ftw!), but once I start the first real mission, I get about 8 FPS (and some really horrible mouse-acceleration-esque input lag) on a GTX 460/i5 2500K. I'm guessing one or more of the models has serious issues... I'll try and isolate which one, but for the moment the mission really is unplayable.

[EDIT] And just like that, it's not lagging anymore. FS is ****ing with me.

[EDIT] been through a few missions, and it's awesome so far! Haven't experienced any lag since the first mission... I have a hunch it had to do with the massive amounts of weapon spam. It was a bit of a BOE, and FS has more trouble than you'd think with BOES (see also: Delenda Est, some WOD missions, BP massive battle for an extreme example).

The FPS was pretty bad in the first mission for me too for some reason.

T'was a good campaign this. Short but good.
The good:
Decent voice acting.
Atmosphere
Mission design
Didn't encountered any big bugs (only one immediately comes to mind, when I was back at the node, the repair droid somehow managed to dock with me again and dragged me a short while back to the nero before it released me, made me go wtf)

The bad:
I didn't liked how the colonial fleet was a mishmash of random FS2 ships and fighters. The imperials had a single fighter type and one bomber, I would have perferred it if the colonials had their own clearly defined fighter type too. It kinda killed immersion when I was going "oh, thats the collossus and the hades"

Maybe when im feeling less lazy I'll type a bit more indepth review
Title: Re: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched + Patch 1.1!

Just finished it.

I'm also getting some major lag in the first mission.

The voice acting, while not quite on par with a professionally developed game, was decent, and I enjoyed the story that was there. The missions were quite tense, even the one I'm mentioning in the spoiler that had no combat.

Spoiler:
The moral choice with the Nero was a nice touch, but ultimately meaningless. It didn't really help that I could replay the mission. I destroyed the colony ship only to find that it contained quite a few civilians. At that point, I simply restarted and chose not to set off the bomb. I really felt immersed in the world the first time through, though.

Unfortunately, other than during that sequence, the ships destroyed the immersion entirely. Several Colossus sized ships were flying around, there were flak cannons (which during FS2 were stated not to have been developed until after the Great War), a beam cannon, and fighters from every era. I was half expecting the elite fighter squadron in the last mission to have shields or something.

Finally, I have to ask: Sonar? In space? Really? I mean, yeah, that mission probably took place in an atmosphere, but seriously.

The missions, while clever, were plagued with glitches. Particularly the attack on the Constantine. Maybe its the fact that I don't have a recent enough build of the game, but I encountered several bugs in that mission including:
Not boosting after capturing transport Kappa. I had to restart the mission. This happened twice.
Being destroyed by the second boost in that mission
My IFF beacons not doing anything to the Constantine (I "only" hit their flak turret)

Again, I have a feeling these issues may be on my end, but I would like some confirmation on that.

I look forward to more work from you as you improve your craft. This is a good campaign, although short, and I had fun!

Should be? Not sure what 'weird flashing scrren thing' refers to.

To respond to the comments regarding the stock ships. They were put in there mainly because I didn't have an art team. :) I pulled a themed set of ships that Scooby_Doo made and used those as the ITN ships. Just getting, balancing (mostly nerfing) and getting the tremendous amount of bugs that were associated with the custom ships was a ton of work. If anyone would be willing to go through the laborious process of either creating custom pre-Freespace era ships, or at least finding ones on the Wiki that look old, downloading, balancing, and fixing the errors associated with any sloppy user-generated ships, feel free to.

Considering it takes place before energy-based weapons are common, as well as before the invention of any kind of subspace, I'd say ship designs would have been radically altered by the time of the Terran Vasudan War. Most of the campaign you use actual kinetic 50 MM rounds, and Fury dumb-fire missiles. The last mission features the ML-10 Laser, and the MX-10 Heat Seeker, a nod to FS1's ML-16 and MX-50.

The first mission is really unplayable..
And it looks very strange to pilot the Ares whereas the campaign occurs before the Great War. Still, without any art team, it's understandable.

The released TVWP campaign takes place just at the discovery of subspace and well before the Terran Vasudan war, so ship designs would be more in line with the time frame of Burning Heaven.

For me, this campaign should never be related to Freespace universe. You could replace Freespace ships by Esarai's/Vengence/Steve-O models. I'm currently modify ships. The only thing that stuck me is POF CS 2. It crashes when I try to reduce the size of a ship. I have several ships I want to put in are 3 Km long or greater.

I finished the campaign a few days ago.  It may have been short but it certainly lived up to the hype of the trailer.

The use of FreeSpace 2 ships actually didn't kill the immersion for me.  It was the choice of the author and I respect that.  The storyline and excellent voice acting certainly merit a playthrough.

Regarding the size of the campaign.  I actually ran a test using 7zip (ultra compression setting) and the campaign comes out to about 840 MB. I don't remember the exact size so take that number with a grain of salt.

@LoneKnight: Do you plan on releasing additional mini campaigns in this universe?

EDIT: I did come across one bug.  In the ship yard mission, after you perform your task and get past security the drone reattaches itself to you and drags you almost all the way back to the checkpoint before releasing you.  This doesn't break the mission but it is a tad annoying.

We'll see what happens with time. I'm in my last semester of college, and getting ready for finding a job as a Game Designer. Volition is actually on my list of potential companies to apply at :) Bearing how things work out, I'd like to continue releasing projects to cover the pilot making the first subspace jump, expansion into other systems and exploration, and probably ending it with the first encounter with the Vasudans many years later, as there are reputable campaigns following that conflict. I'd also like to one day replace the retail ships with unique ships for this series, but that's a pipe dream which would require a team of artists. I'm really glad that people enjoyed it.

Turn off subsystem targeting before your attack (Alt S is the default). Be sure you aren't hitting a turret. That's what fixed it for me.

I also have a flickering black screen, I read that can be the new shaders, but I eliminated them, and moved my files into a fresh installation of FS2, any option for repairing this?

It's a bug from a fade-out SEXP while having VSync on (off? one of those).

I usually don't write reviews for mods I play(maybe I should start?  :nervous:) but I felt like I should in this case.
the overall game was pretty good, I enjoyed the story, voice acting and music, I also really liked the news reports after each mission as well as the CBanims

on the bad side was the bugs:
massive framerate drops(first and last missions) for no real reason, apart from maybe mass weapon spam.
mission breaking bugs, M3 comes to mind, I died while boosting, boosting didn't start, and wasn't able to tag the station untill reading the "fix" for this on the boards.
the M3 bugs really killed my mood, and I almost stopped playing, you should fix them asap
another small remark I have is the missions wern't interactive enough IMO, most were there as an interactive movie rather than a typical FS mission, not a bad thing but something  to think about in future releases :)

Don't know what to tell you, I don't see any major errors in the log you posted. Te only thing I can think of is hardware. I have a comparable video card in my laptop and every time I try to play with MediaVPs on it crashes when I click commit.

Finally gotten round to playing this and wow!

Real voice acting and moral choices that actually have some effect! Brilliant stuff! :D

My only gripe so far is that I'm getting the slowdowns too; I'm not 100% sure what causes it yet, but I do know in the first mission if I target certain fighters (Bombers in fact) the framerate drops to single digits, but if I Alt+T to clear the targetting box the framerate jumps up again?

I have a similar problem with Blue Planet and FSCRP Titan Rebellion. When I posted about it wrt Blue Planet, it was suggested there may be issues with the UV maps on some of the models which could cause this...?

But regardless, this is an incredible campaign; It really drew me in and made me feel like I was right in the thick of it! Stuff like this puts a lot of commercial games to shame!

I had to tune down the difficulty to medium, it's pretty much obvious why the Rebels lost the war on Insane, being vastly inferior technologically....

Other than that, very good story, pretty unconventional gameplay and setting. Still ran into a few bugs though- sometimes my Ares didn't stop when it reached a waypoint and just kept on moving at Ludicrous Speed.

And one more thing- it's better not to give a tech description at all than give it for another ship using the same model.

When's part II coming?

Spoiler:
Titan was being bombed was bloody amazing.  "They are bombing Titan."  "What the hell do we do!?"  "Theres nothing we can do." With great music playing.  Loved that bit.

Was a bit of a moron in the announcement thread but regardless I just wanted to mention I liked this since I just played through it.

Hm still stuck in the Kappa escort with not getting out of hyper drive. And it also seems in the wrong direction.

I saved the fixing file as .fs2, but my Burning Heaven folder does not contain a data oder data/missions folder. Only the vps with ini files. I created the folder to store the fix inside, but ist is still not working.

Sorry to aks that again, but I would really like to continue it...

This is the error

Sorry for the big necro but I had a question on this campaign and heard it's okay to bump campaign release threads for a relevant post.

I was wanting to try this campaign again (I haven't played it in years).  The green 'link' to the latest version of the campaign (1.1) isn't clickable.  The only thing I could click on was the 1.01 freespacemods link.  Now on that page it did say 1.1...however, when I actually tried to download it Chrome said it was downloading version 1.01

How do I actually get the latest version, version 1.1?

Nah, readme says:
Code: [Select]
Extract the Burning_Heaven folder and all of its contents in your root Freespace 2 Directory.and in your case files are in correct place.

Anyway this is weird:
Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Burning_Heaven_v1_01\BH_Sound_102.vp' with a checksum of 0x2e476376
...
Searching root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Burning_Heaven_v1_01\BH_Sound_102.vp' ... Failed to read file entry (currently in directory )!
66 files
Checksum is the same as mine, but number of files is wrong. It should be 468 files.

The checksums listed in the debug log are only a partial checksum (of the last 2 MiB of the file, as I understand it). If you want a proper comparison, you'll need to do a checksum of the whole archive. You can use an external tool, of course (like md5sum), or you can have FSO do it by running it with the "-verify_vps" command-line option, which uses the same checksum algorithm but checks the entire file instead of just the last 2 MiB and puts the results into vp_crcs.txt. Of course, these checksums aren't comparable with the "abbreviated" checksums used by the debug log; you'll both need to use the same method for a valid comparison.

I'd recommend trying the link with a different browser, maybe your Chrome is being paranoid about downloading from FSFiles for some reason? (/longshot)

Um got a bit of an issue trying this on Knossos 0.7.1 .. on the first mission I'm supposed to "engage my boosters" but neither alt-j, tab nor throttle up do this.  Am I missing something here or is this supposed to be an automated cutscene that doesn't fire right?  Also ... why are there FS2 ships before the GTVA even exists?  Again, this may just be an issue with the install but if it is it's a big one.

You have to press Shift-J.  It tells you this in the directives menu, but it's hard to see.
As for the FS2 ships, you'd have to talk to the original campaign creator, who is no longer around.

The mission where you need to disable Kappa transports escort and disable their communications then hit the Constantine with an IFF beacon is broken. Firing the missile at it does nothing, and as you approach the Constantine it triggers an enemy to say something then goes to a cutscene outside your ship and just hangs there. You can push the comms key and hear the sound but nothing else works. Tried this about 10 times and I'm tired of wasting time. Any help is appreciated.

I'm having trouble on that mission but with a different part.

After I've assumed the role of Kappa and defended the transport from a Colonial attack, I'm supposed to move on to the part where I actually tag the Constantine.  However after my jump begins I just continually move past the Constantine and don't stop so I can't play the final part of the mission.

The Constantine is supposed to be tagged and then destroyed.  Is the message either "This is Murmillo Squadron. We've located the escort to Kappa by the first Jump Point. Kappa's escort are insurgents! Stop them!" or "This is Murmillo Squadron. We've located debris belonging to the Colonial Security escort with Kappa. Kappa's escort are insurgents!"?  If either of those two messages were played, that means you were too slow to tag the Constantine and you'll be automatically jumped out.
then goes to a cutscene outside your ship and just hangs there. You can push the comms key and hear the sound but nothing else works. Tried this about 10 times and I'm tired of wasting time. Any help is appreciated.
The auto-leave had a bug where the break-warp sexp was called at the beginning of the mission but the corresponding fix-warp was never called at the appropriate time.  Try updating and I think you should at least be able to finish the mission (although if the above situation is true, you'll fail).

I'm not sure what's happening there.

I also had a problem technically with the mission where you decide whether or not to blow up the Nero and take a civilian liner with it.  When the civilian liner (interestingly a Hades destroyer in mission) comes in it rams the Nero and both blow up (along with that generator that looks like a meson bomb).

I'm still able to complete the mission either way (it still gives the option of sending the detonation signal) but no matter what I do I get both sets of debriefing text in the debriefing (whether I chose to send the signal or not send the signal).

I completed the campaign today and there was a minor issue.

Mission 4 is the major decision point of the campaign I believe and it sort of branches from there.  I looked in the tech room mission simulator (campaign page) and missions 5-7 had a "B" after them (5B, 6B, and 7B).

However, I just completed the campaign and looked in the techroom and mission 8 was listed as 8A.  Is there an explanation for this?
Title: Re: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched + Patch 1.1!
Post by: PIe on February 24, 2018, 12:10:06 pm
7B leads to 8A or 8B and 7A is the end of the campaign.  Looking at how the campaign branches, this is how it's supposed to be.
Title: Re: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched + Patch 1.1!
Post by: CT27 on February 24, 2018, 02:03:11 pm
I get most of what you're saying.  Thanks for the help.

One more thing though:  What determines whether you get 8A or 8B?  I ask because mission 7B seemed pretty straightforward without any real decisions to make.

Also, I haven't played both 8A and 8B yet but I looked at both through the techroom and the command briefings and missions briefings seemed identical so I'm not sure what the difference is.
Title: Re: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched + Patch 1.1!
Post by: PIe on February 24, 2018, 03:23:18 pm
It depends on whether you fulfilled the bonus goal in Part 2.  Pretty much the only differences are in the briefing and debriefing and that you can fly a Ulysses in 8A.
Title: Re: Burning Heaven Campaign Launched + Patch 1.1!

I think I may have missed that.  What do you mean by "bonus goal" and what mission is that objective in?

EDIT:  Never mind, I figured out that the bonus objective in Part 2 was
Spoiler:
docking with and rescuing the allied pilot in that mission.
That made the command briefing of 8A a little different than 8B even though I didn't notice anything different in the regular mission briefings.

However, what do you mean by the Ulysses?  Through the tech room when I tried both 8A and 8B I flew the same ship and it didn't look like the Ulysses

From
Code: [Select]
$Starting Shipname: Alpha 1
$Ship Choices: (
"GTF Ulysses" 5
"GTF Raptor" 5
)
I thought you could fly either, but the ship selection menu is locked out, so I guess you only get the Raptor.

Thanks again for the help.

I would have thought the missions that was 8A should have been 8B though.  The "B" path is the 'good' path it feels like and
Spoiler:
saving the pilot in mission 2 for the bonus objective was a good deed.

Hi there!

Not sure if this the right place to ask this, but I get an error pop up on Knossos when I try to launch Burning Heaven. The attached image shows the pop up.

Any ideas what I need to do to fix it?

Cheers :-)

Any mod using the 3.8 MVPs, such as Burning Heaven, requires a nightly and it looks like you're not using one.
Fortunately though, because of this, I found and fixed a major problem so you should be able to update to a working version soon.

Hi PIe!

Yep, the update posted today fixed the problem, and no 'Double Hud Bug'  :D

Thank you

Hi folks,

I try reaching Titan but cannot stop the fighter pressing "BACKSPACE". Therefore, I always crash into that destroyer. That key is not toggled anywhere?! Ideas?

I think you're just supposed to try and "dive".

Hey all, has anyone played this bad boy in the last 6 months or so? I booted it tonight and was super, super impressed by the writing, VA, and overall vibe - but:

Spoiler:
In the third mission where you have to EMP a freighter, destroy its comms, and disable its fighter escort - is there anything else you need to do? I take out its comms and disable the fighters, but the freighter just jumps away and I fail the mission. I took a (quick) look in FRED to see if anything is broken and I don't think it is, but I know that some of the recent builds have broken behaviour in old mods. So my question is: is it broken, or am I missing something here?

Spoiler:
Took a look at the mission in Notepad++. I was hoping this might be related to Issue #2157, but the ship-[rot-/lat-]maneuver SEXPs aren't used here. However, if 2157 turns out to actually be a larger issue with AI movement code, there might still be a connection. Hard to say at this point.

Does this situation occur if you try the mission repeatedly?

What happens shortly before Kappa 1 jumps? What messages are sent? How much time passes between Kappa 1's last message and the time it jumps?

Also, how fast is Kappa 1 moving before it jumps away? Does it seem unusually fast for a Poseidon-class freighter?

I don't want to spoil the mission for you, but I'll confirm that you've missed a primary objective. If you aren't aware of that objective, though, that presumably means that the event that's supposed to make that objective known to you isn't getting triggered.

A number of this mission's events' triggers are related to proximity and/or timing, so if a ship is moving faster than the FREDder intended, or if the ship is taking a path other than one the FREDder intended, that might be the problem.

EDIT:
Spoiler:
Another thought: Goob recent-ishly made changes to how FSO calculates timing, for Windows 11 compatibility I think. I don't know the details/repercussions, but given how many of the mission's events depend on timing, possibly related? I don't think the changes are in an official release yet, though.

Spoiler:
Yo! Appreciate your help dude! So I replayed it just now to see if I could reproduce it, and the first time the exact same thing happened, and then I realised in every playthrough that I've been firing the EMP at the Poseidon freighter the entire time. I feel like that shouldn't be a drama, but maybe FRED-side the FREDer forgot to include it in some event that's meant to trigger the consecutive messages etc, because when I fired the EMP at one of the Myrmidon escorts, the mission actually progressed. Moral of that story being, don't fire the EMP at the freighter you're meant to capture in mission three!
