Mission 4 will display the load screen for the briefing, finishing loading, and then crash.

Please post your fs2_open.log file.  Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.

And even though it's talking about Freespace Open, it applies equally to Diaspora.  The log should give us more information to help diagnose this problem.

You are running Diaspora with an Intel graphics card, which unfortunately is not supported.

Code: [Select]
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 1360x768 with 32-bit color...
  Initializing WGL...
  Requested WGL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, stencil: 8, double-buffer: 1
  Actual WGL Video values    = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, stencil: 8, double-buffer: 1
  OpenGL Vendor    : Intel
  OpenGL Renderer  : Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
  OpenGL Version   : 4.0.0 - Build 9.17.10.2857

Does your laptop have dual video cards? From a quick websearch it doesn't look like it does, but just in case, may be able to force Diaspora to use your nVidia/AMD card using the appropriate video control panel.

If that doesn't work, try turning off post-processing in the launcher (Advanced Settings tab -> Graphics section -> uncheck Enable Post Processing)
If that also doesn't work, you could try disabling all shader support (Advanced Settings tab -> Troubleshoot section -> check Disable OpenGL (shader) support)

great now Mission 5 has a glitch. loads and plays fine untill the heavy raiders jump in and start attacking the civilian ships. as soon as the first one goes down (warwick i think), the game crashes with the message "runtime error, freespace has asked runtime to terminate in and unusual way."   what did I break?

Hmmm... can you post another log from when the crash occurs in mission 5?  Also, if it crashed while running the debug executable, try the normal executable.  Sometimes it continues "working" when debug gives up (i.e. it's a bit more forgiving about certain errors)

ran it in normal and debug. crashed both times though one time it crashed on the second or third ship that was destroyed.

I'm not sure what's causing that issue.  Have you checked that your video drivers are up to date?

If they are, or updating them doesn't help, try downloading & using this version of the FSO executable (use SSE2), it should support Diaspora and it may have resolved this issue.

I'm glad you managed to finish the campaign.

In the interests of helping anyone else who encounters the same problem, would you mind posting which settings you decreased in order to avoid the crash?

Sure
1360x 768
32 bit trilinear
disabled post processing
default "medium" settings with the model detail bumped up a  notch or two and the lighting as well
