I've always liked the idea of green Shivans, but the screenshots from FS1's early development didn't convince me it could actually work.

These, on the other hand, look awesome. I'd be very tempted to use these if you finish the whole fleet.

Oh, right. The actual topic. I dunno... that green sure gives some "organic" aspects to the ships, but red is still more intimidating and "cool", in my opinion.

Quite, but still. Green doesn't convince me that the Shivans are an ancient threat that is sure to cause pain and misery. Some dark-ish blue might give a good and cold feeling, but green... it just doesn't work. But I say again. My opinion. Feel free to disagree. There's nothing wrong with it.

Green makes them less stereotypical as the red baddies, but I agree on that, partially. I think the idea of a separate fleet or something is the most plausible one.

One problem I see with the reskins is that they're not varied enough. For the Shivans to be green, I always imagined a mix of a few other colors too, like the end cutscene Lucifer.

Orions have some orange on them.
Terran ships are predominantly green, brown, grey and black though. The Orion is an oddball in terms or colorization.

(a sudden thought of a "low rider" dragon assaulted my mind there o.o) not that it would matter for the shivans being all so "hive-mind" and stuff (for the record, i don't like that theory, just seems to be a more accepted thing)

Mhhh, when i saw the images in green i thought "who the hell sneezed on that?!" they look too insect type, the red does look more "evil"... also the green ones look quite not scary, just a bit annoying, while a red and black ship looks more nightmare like...  Again, this is just an opinion and is open for anyone to bash it (like if i could stop you XD)

But then we once again get on the "Let's do it like everyone else" track. The Earthlings are always depicted as a diverse species, with numerous nationalities, religions and groups of all sorts. And aliens are always monotonous species that have on nation, one religion, one goal and no diversity whatsoever. Though I admit that creating a new species with as much diversity as humans is surely a challenge for anyone, regardless of the imagination.

No, I agree with Mobius here. Using a small pool of designs for your enemies makes them more iconic, recognizable, and threatening. Consider the TIE Fighter/Star Destroyer, the Borg Cube, the...er, I can't think of any more at the moment, but I believe the principle stands!
