Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Hi Everyone:

Been dealing with this problem for a while without success.

Whenever I start a mod that doesn't use a canned video (like the FS2 intro), the screen remains mostly black with a slight glow around the edges.  The audio is playing correctly, so I know the mod is running, but there is no display.  This happens with BP, Transcend & WC:DD.

I can skip to the pilot selection interface, but this pretty much sinks any cutscenes using the engine.

I'm using the Knossos manager if that makes a difference & everything is up to date with the default settings for video.

Video card is an older AMD Radeon HD 6800 series (1920 x 1080) & Win 7 is the OS.  Been running FS2 with this card for a long time, so I'm not sure what has happened in the last year where I lost the ability to see the engine cutscenes.

Can anyone point me in a direction to troubleshoot this?  Would like to finally be able to see the new mediavps 4.4!

Thanks in advance.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Well that's new. Can you post a debug log?

Also, it's worth noting that BP (and I'm guessing WC:DD) DO use a pre-rendered video intro. So maybe the problem is with rendering those...?

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Could the selected resolution not matching the video?

Try a different lower res?

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Thanks for the replies guys.

Debug log is here: https://fsnebula.org/log/60357f3bd42c7b84b2d7bf59

I tried stepping down to 1680 x 1050 & 1600 x 1200 with the same result.  The desktop is running in the same 1920 x 1080 resolution as the game (can't go any higher on the Knossos video selection drop down.

Unfortunately, that's the knossos log, not the FSO one. Please refer to this guide to get a debug log from FSO.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Sorry!  Here's the link to the debug log for BP:
https://fsnebula.org/log/6036b919a25ade58ffd7bf5a

Something interesting happened during the Fast Debug.  A warning bell dinged and when I alt-tabbed a few times, this message popped up:

When I hit continue, the video intro for BP played correctly!

That sounds familiar.... I think that sort of thing used to happen to me before I started using knossos.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Hi All - Just wanted to clarify from my last post - missing video is still a problem when I run in normal mode.  Debug allows me to see the BP intro video once i get through the popup message, but all other cutscenes are a black screen with glowing edges.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Ok, so I wiped my entire install and and redownloaded most of everything.  The intro cutscenes in BP are now loading, but the AOA cutscene is only showing wireframe models of the ships for some reason.  Latest debug log attached and a screenie of the issue.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
That, at least, has an easy explanation.

Code: [Select]
Searching root 'C:\Games\FS2\blueplanetcomplete-1.1.4\' ... 2698 files
According to this log, you are missing a couple hundred files, most likely from one of the -visuals packages. Please use Knossos' "Verify File Integrity" function to see if knossos can redownload the missing files.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
OK, so I tried the file integrity check and it passed, but didn't resolve the issue.  So I deleted all of the BP mod folders and selected only the non-advanced res packages and it seems one of the res packages is not downloading.  Everything else came down in a few minutes, but this one has been hanging for several minutes at 24KB/s, so I'm not sure if the file is broken or not.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
The visuals file mentioned above in the screenie finally downloaded after  30 minutes or so (never went above 136 KB/s).

Tried this again with the same result each time:

Without any of the advanced packages: File Integrity OK, no change.

DL bpc-advanced1, File Integrity OK, no change.

DL bpc-advanced2, File Integrity OK, no change.

DL bpc-advanced3, File Integrity OK, no change.

All selections under the modify menu in BP are checked and verified as installed.

Re: Black Screen for Engine Generated Cutscenes
Some other observations:

FSO port 4.4.0 shows the Oriff (sp) model correctly on the first mission of the FS1 campaign, but the 4.4.1 MVPs on the FS2 campaign has missing models for about half of the ships in the techroom.  All you see is the engine glow or damage glow in the game (see screenie).

One note, I did NOT run the installer for the GOG version of the game, I just pointed the Knossos installer at the executable.  Could that be the problem?
