Re: Steam Summer Sale Discussion Thread
Just got Deus Ex: HR with the DLC (better boss battles, apparently?) while it was still on sale, although I didn't notice there was an Augmented Edition. Eh, I have the game, and that's what matters. This is the first thing I've gotten from the sale so far.

The DLC has a better boss battle, but the core game stays the same.

Re: Steam Summer Sale Discussion Thread
I'm kind of curious what exactly that redo entails. A lot of people were unhappy with the boss battles, especially those who expected something similar to the first Deus Ex. Will they implement a way for exceptionally cunning and sneaky players to bypass them like the killphrases for the UNATCO mechs?

To deathspeed: I highly recommend Terran Conflict. Gameplay-wise, think of it as a extended version of Wing Commander Privateer or Elite. X3 is probably the best open world space sim currently available - you can work your way up from average joe pilot to intergalactic tycoon, and to top it off they have an active hardworking modding community. Be advised though - the learning curve can be a bit steep, as you are thrown into a huge universe with minimal direction - you might want to check out the Egosoft forums to get started, they write excellent guide.

Re: Steam Summer Sale Discussion Thread
There's going to be a Director's Cut version that will integrate Missing Link and redo the boss battles.

I can't read that link at work, but it had better be ****ing free to people who already own the game and hated the boss battles.

Protip for people just playing it now:  If you think the boss battles are stupid because you are playing a pacifist/stealth character (as I did), your stun gun can stunlock all of them to death with about 20-30 shots.  It's cheap, but the battles are stupid anyway.

On a different note, it appears the maximum discount on Skyrim is 40% this summer (for the Legendary edition).  Guess I'll wait until Christmas.

I know! It's a real downer. Sure, I have tons more stuff to play, but a good deep RPG like this would really hit the spot.

System Shock 2 for $2.50 is really tempting, but I've already told myself that I'll grab it on GOG instead, since they have a ton of extras with it.

Saints Row III is more of an RPG than Skyrim is.  Just sayin'.

Re: Steam Summer Sale Discussion Thread
I think the term "RPG" has been a little bit conflated with "sandbox" lately.  An RPG does not have to be a sandbox to be an RPG.  Skyrim is fairly the epitome of RPG, in that you customize your character and advance your skills throughout the story in which you choose how your character behaves and affiliates.

Whether you particularly like it or not is a non-issue.

I have yet to actually start into the first Witcher game, though I have it installed.

There are two basic types of RPGs: Role-playing games and roll-playing games.  I rarely use the latter as my benchmark since it can refer to just about anything that uses a random number generator.

Skyrim as a role-playing game: I have a paladin character who runs around doing good and never once acting in a manner that is not lawful-good.  I go to
Spoiler:
Riften
and some jerk calls me a thiefy-looking-guy and tells me to steal something
Spoiler:
so I can join his crappy (heh) guild
.  Am I allowed to tell the authorities?  Am I allowed to bring him to justice myself?  Can I do anything other than walk away or complete his task? (Hint: the correct answer is "no")

Skyrim as a roll-playing game: I guess?  I mean, I didn't care for its take on this, what with it getting rid of any and all statistics and having the most ridiculous take on level-scaling / not level-scaling I've ever seen.  But other people seem to like the way it handled these aspects.

It's on the list to buy, so I haven't yet, but I do hear good things.

This is what I was thinking. And when I posted the first, I really did expect somebody to roll by and mention the Witcher :P

Also: Duplicate Football Manager and Tomb Raider cards now, need Dead Island and Skyrim (if somebody else beat me to Scotty's)

Re: Steam Summer Sale Discussion Thread
Contemplating getting Dishonored, since I've been interested in it for a while. Not sure if the DLC is worth it.

I'm thinking I'll wait and see if the price falls below 66% off or at least stays that way sometime after its current sale ends in 7 hours. Even if it doesn't go on sale again, there's always the Christmas sale. The backlog of to-be-played games (including FS2 mods) is plenty long as it is.

If you're talking about The Knife of Dunwall, I've heard it's much better than the stock game.

The DLC is much better than the original game? That doesn't sound like a vote of confidence for the game itself... :blah:
