Well, yeah... the first X was pretty boring. I loved the first part, just when you arrived in the new system though. It had some really nice SciFi feeling. ;)

X2 was more fun. Finally you were able to buy new ships. X3 isn't all that different from X2. It's mostly a way better looking game. BTW X2 still looks awesome too, so I guess you get the idea. ;)

I wouldn't give too much about the reviews. The X games are kinda special. You love them, or you hate them... And there is no game that could be compared to X.

@Tyrian
It took me a hour to get used to the most important controls, but even after a few days of playing I found more stuff, I didn't know about. Which is fun sometimes "Ohhhh, I didn't know this was possible. Awesome!", and sometimes depressing "Ahhhh... I've lost a lot of money, cause I didn't know about it".

I hate to read manuals. ;)

X3 is a complex game! It allows you to do very much and therefore is pretty realistic, but that comes at a price. It's not easy to use.
I hate complex games with too many screens and menus, but I still found my way into the game.

I don't want to say it's a great game. I like it, but I'm sure many people do not or wouldn't like it.

If you're not interested in the trading system at all, you shouldn't even think about buying it.

Well, I just read those 3 reviews on the X series I linked to, and I've concluded that it's not my style of game. While I loved the open feeling you got playing FarCry, where you could approach the next part of the level in any way you wanted to, I also need the storyline to drive me. That's why I liked FS2 so much - the storyline.

Incidentally, that's what I want to do in Unsung Heroes - tell a story. I just don't have anyone who has the drive to press forward with it. *hint hint* :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

As a big Final Fantasy fan, I love a good storyline. It's really essential for most games. But it would probably kill your freedom in X3.
I had fun playing the story, but it could be told way better. Everything that is not part of the in-game content, can't keep up with the quality of the game.

The renderscenes aren't good at all. The CG woman in the news looked and moved like the movie is older than the FS2... I mean FS1 intro. ;)

You can do so much, that you don't need a story anyway. You can pick up missions, or search for secrets, explore, build stations... and get rich.

I've been playing X2 for the last couple of days.  Pretty solid for trading, but the combat part seems to be lacking a bit, and its a bit hard to fight when using a mouse, then again its probably that my Argon Discoverer is a piece of ****.  Got a few questions that I couldn't find in the manual:

1) When purchasing a ship, it shows "Ship Name S/M/L/XL", is the last part the size of the cargo containers it can hold?  If so, is it preferable to save for the L class when buying a fighter (looking/grinding towards an Argon Nova, atm), or can i be same with the S/M?

2) Alpha weapons are the weakest?  Gamma are the strongest?  Will gammas fit on a Nova?

1) It just a ship class afaik. You can buy cargo size upgrades in stations.

2) Yepp Alpha>Gamma. Can't say for sure, but I don't think the Nova can use Gamma weapons.

Wow. X2 is SLOW. I'm looking at the thing and thinking "this isn't moving much more than FSOpen" and yet it's chugging away at what looks like 25FPS. The constant usage of the "ura" is irritating too. It's ura this, ura that. Give it a break.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

The S/M/L is what equipment the ship has. S being minimal stuff and L normally being maximum shields, a few weapons, the works. Most players early in the game have few ways of buying 25MW shields so they tend to buy their transports with full shielding to avoid having to wander through a sh*tload of sectors searching for that one friendly 25MW shield factory. As for a fighter, it depends what kind of shielding it has, but yes, it is preferable to buy the L as you can't do much usually without a fully kitted fighter. You might want to try to capture a pirate M4, that thing is pure evil, 4 weapon slots!

2) Alpha weapons are the weakest?  Gamma are the strongest?  Will gammas fit on a Nova?
Alpha < Beta < Gamma
Higher weapons have higher damage and range at the cost of more weapon consumption and rate of fire. That said, the Nova can fit some gammas (IRE and the blue ball launching one) but you are advised to use Beta Plasma thingys and if you normally fight in uncrowded space the boron shield sucking beam which name I don't recall.

On the subject of X3, does anyone have any tips for getting started? I completed the first mission and the freighter mission alright, but there's quite a steep learning curve and I can't help but feel I could be doing better if I knew a bit more about the game.

Before I started with the missions, I took on a few pirate ships and if they really left their fighters alone, I sold them. ;)

It's pretty nice to have a bit more money right from the start. Especially when your starting ship is way superior to single pirate fighters in the neighbour system.  :drevil:

Sounds like a good idea, but how do you get hold of their fighters etc? I've seen them drop missile packs but I don't know if they're even recoverable etc.

Consider me a complete n00b when it comes to this :)

Silicon mines are still a good starting point for factories, however, the original earning enough just to be a single freighter is probably the slowest part of the game, your money really does start to take off exponentially once you get that part of things sorted.

One hint you may find useful for X3 is that Out Of System Combat (i.e. Combat that takes place in a system other than the one you are in) gives your ships an advantage, because it is worked out mathmatically, instead of trying to fly all the ships. This means that it IS possible to swamp an enemy ship as long as you aren't part of the group swamping it. I haven't played for a while, so I hope they've fixed some of the dumb AI moments :)

Right now i have a power plant in Kingdom End and a Wheat Farm in the neighboring system of Three Worlds.  Slowly making the money i need for an M3, but I'll probably get another factory or two and start raking in the money.  I was thinking of getting a mine in Ore Belt, but the Khaak are running around over there and i don't have the money for escorts for my supply transports.

Well, I've managed to get an Ore and Silicon mine running in Ore Belt and just kicked off an Argnu Beef factory. I'm playing X3 though, so I plan to link them together into a complex eventually. Khaak aren't too bad once you get the hang of them, an escort of a couple of well armed Busters and maybe 4 of the light fighters (Discovery in X3, not sure for X2) should be more than capable of handling a standard cluster. Shields are important later in the game, when yo get the chance, open up a 25Mj shield factory, you'll have trouble finding enough to fit all your ships otherwise.
