Title: Open GL issues
Post by: Asteroth on January 16, 2011, 02:15:59 am
Complaining that I don't have an up-to-date version of Open GL. I've searched that issue and the answer is always the same: Update your drivers and get the newest FSO build, both of which I've done and neither of which helped anything.

Code: [Select]
Current GL Version of 1.1 is less than the required version of 1.2.
Switch video modes or update your drivers.

And a Debug Log. That would be awesome.

Well I don't know if this'll fix it, but try turning up your resolution to something like 1024x768. 640x480 ain't exactly pretty.

Please remove. Some old MediaVP file. Shouldn't cause the issue but will probably cause other issues.

And not implying anything here; just covering all possibilities. But you have
- downloaded the latest drivers for your GPU from the nVidia website
- uninstalled old GPU drivers
- installed the new GPU drivers
- booted when prompted
- installed (the latest) chipset drivers as well

, yes?

I'd love to know what is telling you I have it set to 640x480, because I most certainly do not, the launcher has been set to my native of 1680x1050

Yes to the first, no (as far as I am aware) to the others. And I don't believe I know how.

Well the log says:

which is weird.

Probably not related but if it's a new clean install of FS then... have you installed openal?: http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx

OpenAL is listed in the log and is 1.1 as it should be.

I'm curious to know the operating system you are running. As the fs2_open log usually STARTS with
Code: [Select]
DEBUG SPEW: No debug_filter.cfg found, so only general, error, and warning

Where as yours has it in the middle. Which means either this isn't windows, or that is your Fred2_open.log you posted.

Noticed this, this is checksum from my files and is different from yours:
Code: (fs2_open.log) [Select]
FreeSpace2\root_fs2.vp' with a checksum of 0xce10d76c

You may want to check your FS2 install and make sure it's patched to version 1.20. If it's not, I can scour up a link for that.

I use Windows Vista, however I did use the fred2_open log. I now realize I never actually mentioned that FRED was what gave me the error, not just normal FSO, which works fine. My apologies.

Given that both use the same engine, and both use the same engine init code, I suspect your GPU driver is thoroughly borked. Uninstall it, and reinstall the current version.

I tried updating my graphics card drivers, but that didn't work. What exactly do you mean by my GPU drivers other than that?

Don't update.  Totally uninstall and reinstall.  Something is probably corrupted.

For an 8600 GTS (regardless of who made it) that would be the nVidia 260.99 drivers.

Vista 32 Bit Direct Link (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-32bit-260.99-whql-driver.html)

Vista 64 Bit Direct Link (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-260.99-whql-driver.html)

I guess I just don't know enough about computers, but I'm really not understanding how to just uninstall my ... graphics card? My graphics card drivers? I really have no idea what I'm doing here and I fear the sort of damage that could happen if it's not done right.

Just go to 'Software' (or what it's called ['programs and functions'?] where you can view all your correctly installed programs) and uninstall the nVidia drivers listed there. After a system reboot you simply install your recently downloaded drivers and thats it.

How to check if your Vista is 32-bit or 64-bit? Open Start menu --> Right-click on Computer --> Select Properties --> Under System you will see System type which will say either 32-bit or 64-bit.

Download 32-bit or 64-bit drivers from the link Zacam posted earlier, make sure to download the correct one. Go to Start menu --> Control Panel --> Programs and Features --> Select NVIDIA Drivers --> Uninstall --> Restart --> Note that your display resolution may be low, no need to panic, this is normal. --> Find the driver installation file you downloaded --> Run the file, follow instructions --> Restart. You're done.
