First Strike is a Star Wars Modification for Battlefield 2142
And Battlefield 2142 is a Shooter with infantery, vehicle and aerospace combat. Up to 64 players per server are possible, and the game has very good tools to support teamwork between the players.
Just like the Wings in Freespace it's in Battlefield 2142 possible to create small Groups of up to six players, called Squads.
The Squadleader can give attack or defend orders, any player can mark enemies or call for repair & ammunition
Because of these features the Engine was chosen for the Star Wars Mod First Strike.

The mod has a lot of different maps, from urban settings to large forests or ice plains
Most Maps are played in conquest mod.
It's about taking control points (Flags). If you die, you can respawn at the Flags of your team, each respawn costs a ticket.
If one Team controls more Flags than their enemy, the enemy will lose tickets (called ticket bleed)
The team what has no tickets left or can't respawn will lose the round.
So the the team that controls most of the map or fights better (or does both) will be victorious
In close combat the player who aims better and quicker will make the kill, but in middle and long distance gunfights cover and tactically chosen firing positions are more important than a quick aim.
So each playing style is possible.
If you like to rush & frag? Take the Stormtrooper Class, or the Medic class. The medic is the Stormtroopers best friend, because he can revive critically wounded players
If you like to play tactically and careful, as Heavy Trooper or Sniper you can cover your Stormtroopers Assault with Sniperrifles or Mortars.
As Supporter you can lay down mines, repair vehicles and rearm your buddies.
The Officer is able to place spawnpoints & heavy guns and he can also scan the area for enemys.
A Star Wars Mod without Space Combat ?
...is no Star Wars Mod. First Strike has some Space Combat Maps.
But this Space Combat is less complex than Free Space.
You can't change weapon layout of your fighter and you don't have to worry about Energy allocation ( because there is no Energy to allocate
)
But you have up to 64 Players on the Server, each in on fighter !
And it's possible to flight capital ships together with up to 8 Players (1 Pilot, rest gunners)
