Title: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
Post by: Vasudan Admiral on May 30, 2012, 11:43:13 pm
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/3D_Printer_Stuff/20120530_201108.jpg)

So I bought and built a 3D printer - (a Reprap Huxley), which means I can now do cool stuff like this! :D

These models are around 13cm long, and have been amazingly painted by a friend of mine who's an expert miniature painter. (Check out his site for more pics of the Fenris (http://brushwithdestiny.wordpress.com/2012/05/27/gtc-fenris/) and Aeolus (http://brushwithdestiny.wordpress.com/2012/05/30/gtc-aeolus/) - there's some superb stuff on there)

So I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in getting some printed & painted FS miniatures? :)
Though it would vary with the desired size and complexity of the ship, the basic cost would be about AUD $36 for a similarly sized model, + AUD $15 for a basic-colours-only sort of paint job up to AUD $30ish for the kind of detail seen on the Fenris + postage.

PM me or post here if you're interested. :)

I mean, I don't know that I have the spare cash (or for that matter, space) for them at the moment, but that definitely piques my interest. :)

You should print the Iceni, so you can put the Iceni on a little stand next to your monitor and window and talk about troy and stuff

I see you humans are already working on replicator technology. You still have a long way to go, though.

with the prices of 3d printers now in the $400-$500 price range im probibly gonna get one this fall. its probibly not gonna be a reprep, unless their prices come down a lot. then i can print enclosures for my electronics projects and a nice set of grips for the joystick of doom.

 :eek2: WOW. That's amazing.

I'll be very interested by a painted HTL Sathanas (The RGA_Noris one), but I don't know if it's not too much detailed ?

And also, posting here to ask (maybe useful for others) : Can you use a Paypal for the transaction ?

Great work !

I actually tried doing this with a Makerbot Cupcake at my local hackerspace, for FringeSpace...  for whatever reason ReplicatorG doesn't like my models.

Hmm, I could make the arms separately - which would mean I could print them much more accurately, and also the ship could be bigger overall. So yeah - a Sathanas should be quite possible!
So would you be interested in getting one? If so I'll send a pic to my painter friend to get a cost estimate. :)

And yeah good point - Paypal should be fine. :)

Ooh I could probably print a second Carl. That'd be pretty cool. :D

You should make a version with ball and socket joints so it is pose-able :)

And then take a photograph of it holding Action Mans' head...

How much would an Orion cost me?
I've just done some calculations, and I can make the Orion: (MVP or Retail model btw?)
~13cm long for $36 AUD
~20cm one for $44 AUD
~25cm one for $52 AUD

Do we actually have a finished Shivan model that could be printed? If so, I might be interested in one depending on costs.
Well the printer isn't that well suited to little organic shapes unfortunately, so it's a bit hit and miss detail wise in the final result. (It's also a heap more work to make them than typical ship models, and for some reason [v] made both shivan and vasudan physiology involve these preposterously tiny limb connections which don't help! :\ )
What size were you thinking though? :)

Same here ...

... also a HTL Lucifer would be nice ... or a Ravana ... (but I guess that's wishful thinking considering the shapes of most shivan ships are just to frail for 3D printing as I come to understand)

Ok I think I'll need to test print a Shivan figurine since I have no idea how it will turn out. :\ We shall see!
Aiming for 13.5cm wide (largest dimension), 10.5cm long and 10cm tall.

Ok well I'd call that a success!
Meet Karl, distant subspatial cousin of Carl. Thrice removed.

He may be held together with a bit of bluetac pending some minor repairs, but:

With a pen for size reference (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/3D_Printer_Stuff/20120606_211413.jpg)

So yes, shivans are indeed possible. :)

Model wise the sath is about $50 AUD and $35 for painting. The material is extruded ABS plastic, and it works by putting down layers of material rather than carving it away from an initial block. Less wasteful and more flexible. :)

I think technologically the next step up from this type of printing is laser sintering, which is very wasteful and the results are not as strong, but it provides a much finer detail resolution than extrusion printing can.

And haha, yeah tabletop game pieces would be totally possible!

I've only had a cursory look at B5 Wars online but I believe it's hex-based, so you'd either need larger hexes (and hence a larger space to play on) or smaller models. There is a non-hex based ruleset in the War of Retribution supplement for the 1st edition though.

it would probibly be cheaper in the long run to just get a 3d printer for any kind of large scale production runs like that, especially since 3d printers are really coming down in price (http://hackaday.com/2012/05/16/silidoodle-a-500-3d-printer/). i may get one of the those (though i may get a laser cutter instead).

another thing that was on hack a day not too long ago was an article about the legal ramifications of printing models of copyrighted  materials (particularly from warhammer), that may interest you.

No way, I believe injection molding is far quicker and cheaper per unit to mass produce. 3D-printing in my opinion is only good for prototyping and small-scale production of models that can't be molded for one reason or another.

Sath looks awesome, btw.

Haaaaaa.
Whhaaaaaa..
UUuuuuuuaaaahhh...

I need one of those. Right on my desk. Amazing work.

Edit: I have narrowed down my options to 6 choices:

Rakshasa
Lilith
Hatshepsut
Colossus
Deimos
Pegasus

I want to buy them all, but to get them all painted would be a whopping $450 USD. Obviously, the Pegasus would be the easiest, but I would like your input on the matter, Vasudan Admiral. What might be the best choice? I'm looking for the highest res possible, so that would be harder on a ship like the Collie.
Title: Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
Post by: MatthTheGeek on June 26, 2012, 05:18:31 am
It would also be stupid to make a Colie now when the new WIP HTL isn't out of the door yet.
Title: Re: 3D-Printed Mini Ship Models!
Post by: mjn.mixael on June 26, 2012, 08:27:31 am
New Collie is ready, except for the normal map. VA doesn't need a normal map for this and VA has access to FSU's WIP models...

Hehe, that's where the badge comes in handy! :p
edit: Beaten by mjn!

azile0: Haha the Pegasus would probably be the hardest actually due to how wafer thin it is. They should all be possible though. :)

As for the highest detail....hmm. I personally think the surface of the printed objects favours Shivan stuff the best - where the line between 'hull detail' and 'printed layer' becomes blury. However if you're talking purely in terms of which ships would have the vast majority of their detail survive the print, roughly everything cruiser size and down should be pretty much all there. (I may have to exaggerate or remove some features depending on the ship though - the HTL Lilith and Rakshasa have a lot of very tiny detail)

Corvette and above likely means things like rotating turrets or radar dishes begin to become just little lumps on the hull, and on supercaps they wouldn't be there at all.

Overall my estimate on the 'cool factor' those ships would have compared to each other once printed would be:

A ~20cm (8') Hatshepsut
A ~15cm (6') Lilith
A ~15cm (6') Rakshasa
A ~15cm (6') Deimos
A ~20cm (8') Colossus (Though for the Big C I'm thinking it might be possible to go 30cm (12') for ultimate awesome factor)
A ~15cm (6') Pegasus

Hope that doesn't confuse things further!

Oh oops, sorry I went off on holidays the day this was posted, so I'm only seeing this now! I intended to necro this thread when I got back anyway, so this works out nicely.

But yeah I do still make these. :) If anyone is interested, send me a PM with what ship model(s) and you would like, and your preferred bow to stern length and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Firstly, I have a 20cm, (8inch) MVP Orion and stand for sale if anyone is interested?
The fella who asked me to make it sadly seems to have vanished without a trace, so it's currently at the painter's awaiting an owner before it can be painted and make the jump through the local post office node.

===================================================================================
Secondly, I had hoped for some new painted pics, but the painter has been incredibly busy over these past few months so I'll just have to show my own amateur unpainted pics instead:
Lucifer and to-scale retail Orion
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y184/VA--Twisted_Infinities/3D_Printer_Stuff/20120930_160951.jpg)

Even bigger than the Sathanas, these two models were a bit of a nightmare to print and assemble (the stern of the lucifer practically killed the printer, though the model itself only needed some gap filler to get the surfaces back to rights). The Lucifer came in at about 30cm (12inches).

===================================================================================
Wall mounting
An idea from Cobra, this ended up working really well!

So yeah - future orders can choose whether they want a stand or wall mount. :)

I'd hate to necro this thread but I really would like to know how does one acquire the STL files. Are they obtainable and convertable somewhere in the game directory, or do you have to manually model and CAD the thing from scratch? I am interested in making more of these printable ship models myself, and perhaps getting them printed too, and with the advent of 3D printing, it'll be great if we could share our STL files publicly. Would be interested to start making models like the Appollo. After all, thats the very first taste of the pilot seat in Freespace, no?  :)

Those pics are incredible!

I posted a thread about making 3D prints of ships... anyone have any thoughts on converting Freespace's POF files into something a 3D printer can use, like STL or OBJ? I /WILL/ pay money for a Raynor-class destroyer... probably more, if I can get file converters for myself.

Do you mean like:
1. export dae in pof
2. import dae in blender
3. export whatever you like?

I mean export POF model files into another format, ideally DAE, OBJ or STL, so I can have a few choice favorites for myself. Not looking to market them... unless there's a market for such things.

Wow. That's it. But when I go to my PCS install, the only option I have in the drop down is for POF. Am i missing an addon?

Are you sure you have the latest build? (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=77292.0)

Well, paint me in chocolate. Not sure what I was missing, but that did it.

Hey guys! I apologize for the necropost, but I have been lurking on this forum for a long time now and I wanted to ask for some help related to this topic. I recently got a 3D printer, and I have been interested in printing some FreeSpace models in my free time. I already printed the Orion model (I don't have any pictures unfortunately), and I attempted to print the Lucifer, though it was unsuccessful so far. I really want to print more models, but unfortunately I don't have FreeSpace installed on my computer. I was hoping some of you guys might be able to help out by uploading .stl or .obj files that I could print. I also know that the model files are .pof, so I have no idea how to convert that to something my printer can recognize, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey Vector, if you reread the last couple pages' worth of posts, you should find everything you need. It worked for me... and I was able to (eventually and through a bit of a roundabout process) export a handful of ships to a format a 3D printer can use. Only tried with the GTD Sirona so far, and the result was beautiful. Smaller than I was expecting though, but that's cuz I suck at visualizing size. Don't have pics though, but I do have the model ship itself. Just haven't painted it yet, but it's still packed in a box until I can get a display shelf to put it on. THEN there will be pics!
